I know that quote, but I'll be damned if I can remember where I've heard it before.

And Mercer, yeah, he's a dick. I haven't finished Prototype yet, but he really comes off as an a real douche. "Waaah, I got all these cool powers, pity me while I suck the life out of innocent soldiers."

Squall. OK, he gets better and starts to change and show promise, but damn, what an arse! "Sorry, what's that? You're trying to include me, communicate with me, and generally help me? Get lost!" before wallowing in speeches about how he's "So alone, but no one could ever understand."

... And yeah, I get that this is the basis for his character development, but still.
Oh God, I had forgotten about Squall. I actually used to think he was cool, but he's nothing but an ass towards the people that are close to him. Quistis opens her heart to him and he just ignores her. Zell, probably the only friend that he has, can't even get a damn handshake from him.

Then again, I never finished FFVIII, so I don't know if he cleans up later on.

I'll go for Steve because all he does is kill farm animals and dot the landscape with phallus-like structures.

About four others brought it up. Nice. Didn't think anyone else had seen that.

Kratos. I literally can't think of a dick move greater than destroying the entire world for the sake of nothing but your own personal revenge, especially when the cause of everything that has ever gone wrong in your life has been that you just can't seem to stop killing people.
Pretty much this. The only gripe I actually have with the God of War Series is when the sequel number increases, the storyline is sacrificed for more epic gameplay and setpieces. So I consider Kratos to be awesome and most likeable in GoW 1. While I hate him so much in GoW 3 but still love the gameplay and setpieces.
This +1. I mean, at least God of War 1 Kratos has a legitimate reason to hate his antagonist, want his head and in general be considered the victim of his machinations; by the time you get to God of War 3, the only way to interact with him and not get killed is to fuck him (it looks like he will go out of his way to brutally murder you), and despite he jumping the event horizon more times than a skipping rope champion (and taking the entire known universe with him), the designers still try to sell him as relatable. By the beginning of the game, I was rooting for the Olympians, and it only got worst with time...

Another example is Hope in FF13. He gets better, eventually... but he spend the first 20 hours as such a whinny little brat, and he game insisted on me to feel sorry for him; I just wanted him to confront his antagonist as early as possible so that he could be smacked on his face and be done with him.

Try Wei Shen from Sleeping Dogs.

In the course of avenging his sister (forced into prostitution by the triad), he does the same to many other women, his response to a woman he slept with once who is a hostess in a karaoke bar (The line between this and prostitution is hazy at best) seeing other men is to stalk and confront her (Yes, this is an actual mission in the game, "stalking the prostitute you slept with once" at which point she will actually call him on the double standard, as he is sleeping with other women, and he will completely ignore it undergoing no character growth at all)...

Our hero, ladies and gentlemen!

Cloud in FF7.

I've never related to a character less. He's such a wimpy, brooding pansy. It would be okay if he was portrayed as a weak hero who gets better, but he's not. He's just a dick out for revenge by the end.

Luke from Tales of the Abyss, what a fucking ass hole, that turns into the biggest pansy and then gets the girl at the end, but the pansy you can deal with because he murdered a city. The assholeness was just over the top.

In any other game or medium Kratos would have been the villain, he's just *that much* of an asshole. By the third game he's pretty much doomed the entire world out of petty spite and revenge over something he's the one directly responsible for in the first place. So not only did he screw the world up in the first place by his answer was to just end it rather than fixing anything.

Mind you I'm kinda hoping this is all building up towards a game where Kratos actually is the villain and you play a character trying desperately to stop him and fix his wrongs but... well... yeah, that's not going to happen.

ok, this probably falls under 'comedic' sociopathy but Captain Smiley from Comic Jumper pretty much turned me off the game before I finished the demo, and told me its sense of humour wasn't for me (and comic jumper was most definitely a game that lived or died depending on how people 'got' its sense of humour).

but then I spent a few minutes trying to figure out how I was supposed to save Gerda, when your just supposed to move and and leave her to be blown to smithereens for a hi-LARious punchline.

**blink** Why?

I mean, why is the MC from Persona 3 a dick?

And are you counting the Female MC from P3P as well? Just curious (also, I happen to be playing P3P again at the moment - Akihiko-sempai shall be mine forever! ... also Elizabeth.)

Cole mercer in infamous. I mean, i have understanding for the fact that the developers were trying to give the impression that "he does what he has to do" and in the beginning a lot of "Red" decisions are a bit ambigous (taking food for your friends and safeguard against starvation viz a viz giving it all away) but when his powers start snowballing, and he has the power to power entire city parts by himself, he could have been a hell of a lot of more sympathetic och at least have some cause for being a dick, like trying to rule people.

Now he just gives of a kind of, Mwuahahaha i am evil.

The title made me think of a question a friend asked me when watching Dr Horrible's sing along blog, "So whose the bad guy?" Sure, NPH is the protagonist and nathan fillion is a asshole but Fillions the hero and harris is the villian. I honestly just told him that the moist dude was the hero.

If the MC from persona 3 is a dick then that says something about you more than the MC.

Squall has good character growth and turns into a reasonable human being, unlike cloud that goes from "I am IRON MAN" at the start to "CRAWWLING IN MY SKINNNN" by the end, only pulling himself together long enough to race some chocobos and fight sephiroth.

OT: DA2, because no matter what the subject was, if you don't pick the "paragon" option you sound like an asshole and if you do pick paragon you sound like a robot. That goes for the "smug" option as well.

Also what ever that guys name is from infinite undiscovery who basically runs away or whines or cries or basically refuses to do anything while everyone around him is trying their best to help him through a difficult situation and being nice when i would of killed him and used him as a flag.

You're mad that a blank slate doesn't show character development?

What?
This, and, well, I've never been able to see why people call him a dick. I mean, sure, he has lots of 'I don't care' lines but they're outnumbered by the meaningful ones. And people say he's antisocial- yet, in my game at least, he's currently holding up at least 3 succesful girlfriends, helping a monk get over his family issues, talking to a budding artist about his future, and being tutored by a devil buisnessman. Oh, and the online game thing. And to top it off, he's also getting some of the highest marks in his class.
Anyway, how can you call a guy who is officialy 'charismatic' (I dated Yukari! I can prove it!) a dick?

I think RPG protagonists should be disqualified from this thread since any RPG worth its salt will at one point give you the option to become an evil monster of some degree. Nobody needs to bring up Commander Shepard, savior of the human race and merciless genocidal war criminal, or the Lone Wanderer, savior of the capital wasteland and proud propriator of Paradise Falls, Inc for all your child slave labor needs.

Anyway, Solid Snake's role as the hero of MGS always confused me... he's supposed to be fighting the Patriots, but he also keeps dogging and ultimately killing all the people who pose actual threats to them. I mean until MGS 2 that was just because he worked for the American government and never really had any solid (ha, get it?) goals of his own but even after he and Otacon finally decide to take up arms against the Patriots he still plays directly into their hands without even questioning his own actions.

^ This,so much, while it was refreshing to see someone beat up the stereotypical rpg mascot with the annoying voice,
He becomes fucking unbearable after he takes down Akzeriuth,he starts complaining about how its not his fault, when he could have told his companions Van's(his mentors) plan(save Akzeriuth with his chosen one powers)and figure out it was bullshit, but no,instead he never tells them a thing, and ends up leveling an entire city, then complaining how it wasnt his fault, and wondering why everyone is treating him like shit
They should have done an Acsh route where you beat up Luke

Now,i shall add my own example
Inphy from N3 ninety nine nights
Basically,Inphy is a 17 year old chick whose father was murdered by goblins, instead of realizing war is basically a *****,she takes it personal, becoming a knight templar against goblins, while this is pretty normal in fantasy, there is a mission where you basically attack a goblin city,it is pretty normal, until at the end,you find some women and children, which you basically kill in a cutscene, you can then kill them in actual gameplay, her brother then tells her how much of a ***** she is(if you are playing as him,he slaps her, which is pretty satisfying)
I mean, just look at Dwingvatt's story!(Inphy is the chick in red)That said,Dwingvatt isnt much better, while playing as him he is pretty much a reflection of her, killing pretty much any human he comes across
Man,i say that said waaaay to much.

At least at the beginning of Soulcalibur V's story, Patroklos was like this. He pretty much went on crusades against "malfested" people, killing them for his dark master, Graf Dumas. That almost puts him past antihero territory, it is genocide, that should really make him a villian. He's not even subtle about it, one of his battle quotes is "Malfested vermin have no right to live!". So, yeah, not the most pleasent main ever.

I haven't finished Persona 3 (yet), but I've been assuming the main character's personality (or lack thereof) is highly intentional. All throughout the game people have been saying that one's Persona is an extension of their own personality, but the main character is able to take on any. Not only that, but in order to improve the power of his Personas he improves his social standing with a number of different groups of people, all of which he acts differently with. In other words, in order to level up his his spiritual "Personas" he improves the various personas he puts on with those around him.

If he ever did get some real character development, wouldn't it completely remove his entire source of power?

OT: The worst for this in my experience is Alpha Protocol. I realise he is technically speaking a good guy, but the way he acts and talks is beyond obnoxious. It's so bad it actually kills all the enthusiasm I have for the game, and stops me from playing it.
