Neku Sakuraba. At the start of The World Ends With You, he's a complete jerk to everyone, especially his allies. At least it gets better as the story progresses.

I couldn't help but be reminded of Edge from Star Ocean 4. Jesus, he was unlikable. Not sure how to do spoiler tags, so I'll just be really vague and say that, when he does that really momentous thing in the past (if you've played the game, you'll know what I mean.), he just doesn't stop blaming himself, even though there is no rational way it was his fault. This, coupled with the fact that his voice actor couldn't ACT to save his (or her, can't tell with JRPG protagonists) life made Edge one of the most unlikable protagonists in a game. Also Lymle from the same game. Screw her.

Try Wei Shen from Sleeping Dogs.

In the course of avenging his sister (forced into prostitution by the triad), he does the same to many other women, his response to a woman he slept with once who is a hostess in a karaoke bar (The line between this and prostitution is hazy at best) seeing other men is to stalk and confront her (Yes, this is an actual mission in the game, "stalking the prostitute you slept with once" at which point she will actually call him on the double standard, as he is sleeping with other women, and he will completely ignore it undergoing no character growth at all)...

Our hero, ladies and gentlemen!
This misson felt really creepy when i played it for the first time. Wei even uses his high tech police gear to stalk her o-0. I loved that it kind of backfires at him tough.

I left the whole dating stuff out in my second playthrough and it made the game better for me.
Wei is the ultimate dating dick.

Nathan Drake is the obvious one. His good humour combined with the constant wisecracks and the fact he kills fucking EVERYBODY he meets makes him out as a psychopath to me.

Dan from Binary Domain. I did like him a bit more towards the end, but at the start, he was a bit of a douchey bro type character.

Dr. Watts from To The Moon. Kind of fits here? I like him, but he is an asshole.

I would so love a game if they combine Cole McGrath and Alex Mercer. But you're right. If they do combine those 2 in a game called ProtoFamous or InTotype, they will indeed become the biggest dick and possibly the one of the most powerful mutants as well as a colossal prick.

Gerald in The Witcher. The guy's an unlikeable asshat, who every woman in the world inexplicably wants to sleep with, and even after 30 hours he still couldn't convinve me to give a damn about whatever stupid Witcher thing got stolen at the start of the game that he wanted back.
He doesn't contract diseases and his spunk don't funk. Guy's a walking condom.

Somebody said Wei Shen already, but I don't feel like changing my answer.

Even without having me at the reigns, he acts like a tool. Haven't seen that much.

I started playing Just Cause 2 yesterday, and while the game was fun I was stunned over what a total dick Rico Rodriguez was. I mean, Rico saves this Swedish guy from a casino, who does nothing but try to help him, but Rico still thinks it's appropriate to act like an ass and threaten to kill him all the time.
Erm, I'm pretty sure the Swedish guy who sell his own mother for a couple of bucks, but just doesn't want to get shot in the face by Rico. The reason you even had to rescue him was because he was in tremendous amounts of debt due to his own greedy ways.

As much as I loved FFVIII

Wow. As I was typing that, I realized that pretty much every hero in a recent Final Fantasy game (VII on) is a colossal toolbox. The exception being XII, where the hero is a little girl.
Squall Leonhart

God he is such a massive douchebag emo. I wanted Rinoa to end up with Seifer for heavens sake I hated him that much.

Also Aerith, she pisses me off for some reason. I think she just comes across as totally full of herself.

I think 9's protagonist Zidane is pretty awesome. He even tells the bad guy to go shove it when he makes a big massive reveal. It was refreshing.

You're mad that a blank slate doesn't show character development?

What?

**blink** Why?

I mean, why is the MC from Persona 3 a dick?

And are you counting the Female MC from P3P as well? Just curious (also, I happen to be playing P3P again at the moment - Akihiko-sempai shall be mine forever! ... also Elizabeth.)

This, and, well, I've never been able to see why people call him a dick. I mean, sure, he has lots of 'I don't care' lines but they're outnumbered by the meaningful ones. And people say he's antisocial- yet, in my game at least, he's currently holding up at least 3 succesful girlfriends, helping a monk get over his family issues, talking to a budding artist about his future, and being tutored by a devil buisnessman. Oh, and the online game thing. And to top it off, he's also getting some of the highest marks in his class.
Anyway, how can you call a guy who is officialy 'charismatic' (I dated Yukari! I can prove it!) a dick?
Lol. Pretty sure in today's society that is called "being a playa" and is generally frowned upon by others. Women in particular I would imagine.

Think you walked right into that one sir.

+1 reason why he's a dick. It's mandatory to have many girlfriends if you want max S Links. Didn't find a friendship only option for them.

Anyway onto the main bulk of the topic:

HOW AM I MEANT TO HOLD ALL THESE QUOTES?!

Let me patch together one of my old essays for you all. One second

"And the main body of Persona 3 was marred for me by the MC being an absolute unlikeable jerkface in a friendship based game and the aforemented party AI. It's because all the other characters are all balanced and awesome (<3 Aigis) that the complete lack of character development for the MC is ever the more apparent.

I don't even know my own character's motivations throughout the entire 50/60 hour game. I'm fairly sure he's a selfish bastard who is only in this "friendship" business for the max rank Personae. I have no evidence that he even likes his so called friends. I was looking for it believe me."

Now, i'm going to have to hold up Persona 4 as a reference for most of this because it pulled off the "blank slate" character far better.

The P4 character does have character development. It's mostly subtle but it's there. He's cautious about meeting new friends in a town he's only going to be in for a year for obvious reasons. He opens up more post Yukiko/Kanji and he gradually starts to form an attachment to Nanako regardless of dialogue choice for another example. I have more but you get the idea. It's more about what type of dialogue disappears completely rather than what you can pick if you understand.

Now we look at the P3 MC. Oh... dear. He just says "i don't care" all game. The fact that that option is even there for so long is evidence to the lack of any development at all.

The P3 MC gives off an aura of apathy whenever he does anything. It's like he'd much rather be off doing other things instead of dicking about with Social Link bullshit. The only reason I can think of is that he thinks the extra Persona power makes it all bearable.

Selfish dickbag, in other words.

The option to say "i give no shits" comes up disturbingly frequently and never goes away.

I think the main point of a "blank slate" character is that you're meant to project your own personality onto the guy right? That's the gist of it.

Now, when I view the P3 MC as an unlikeable, womanising, anti-social (plus other words) dick I literally cannot project anything positive onto him. At all. I tried, I really did.

I could not work my own personality into his because, simply put, i'm not that much of a ****.

Oh and the P3 MC doesn't do anything. He has no reason to not forget this bothersome S.E.E.S business and Tartarus crap and leave. I cannot for the life of me see him forming proper bonds with these "friend" people, regardless of what my S links say.

He never acknowledges any friendship within the main story (like in Persona 4) or combat (like in Persona 4)

It's doubly weird because all this awesome character stuff is happening and he's just standing over there somewhere contributing fuck all.

Seriously, party members work through complex emotional problems on their own (or with other party members) while the MC sits in his room. This happens several times. Good to know you care mate.

One good thing. The online MMO Social Link? Fucking genius. He was actually likeable during that whole thing and the reveal of the girl being a teacher at his school was hilarious and actually kinda cute.

So cute in fact I may own a small ship for that pairing.

[sub]Don't tell anyone though, shhhhhhh[/sub]

No i'm not counting the female MC in P3P. Apparently she's nice and adorable. Cool. I'll be sure to play it when i get the chance.

See what I mean? I skip the essay for one post and I have to draft one up anyway.

Kratos. I literally can't think of a dick move greater than destroying the entire world for the sake of nothing but your own personal revenge, especially when the cause of everything that has ever gone wrong in your life has been that you just can't seem to stop killing people.
Pretty much this. The only gripe I actually have with the God of War Series is when the sequel number increases, the storyline is sacrificed for more epic gameplay and setpieces. So I consider Kratos to be awesome and most likeable in GoW 1. While I hate him so much in GoW 3 but still love the gameplay and setpieces.
This +1. I mean, at least God of War 1 Kratos has a legitimate reason to hate his antagonist, want his head and in general be considered the victim of his machinations; by the time you get to God of War 3, the only way to interact with him and not get killed is to fuck him (it looks like he will go out of his way to brutally murder you), and despite he jumping the event horizon more times than a skipping rope champion (and taking the entire known universe with him), the designers still try to sell him as relatable. By the beginning of the game, I was rooting for the Olympians, and it only got worst with time...

Another example is Hope in FF13. He gets better, eventually... but he spend the first 20 hours as such a whinny little brat, and he game insisted on me to feel sorry for him; I just wanted him to confront his antagonist as early as possible so that he could be smacked on his face and be done with him.
I don't think Kratos in the first God of War was where he was his most relatable I think it was in Chains of Olympus. While I don't have a PSP to play it I have watched playthroughs of it. The scene where
you have to use a sequence of button presses to tear Kratos away from his daughter
I found very hard to watch.

Cloud in FF7.

I've never related to a character less. He's such a wimpy, brooding pansy. It would be okay if he was portrayed as a weak hero who gets better, but he's not. He's just a dick out for revenge by the end.
...??? Cloud was neither wimpy nor brooding nor a pansy in FF7. That and Crisis Core are literally the only games where he doesn't fit those adjectives, as opposed to Kingdom Hearts, Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, Before Crisis, On the Wings of a Smile, etc. I mean, he dresses as a woman and goes on dates with big black men in FF7 for christ's sake.

Anyway, as for the topic...Some of the ones I haven't seen yet are: L/Kira (Death Note has games, yes), every Disgaea protagonist ever, Overlord Zetta, Revya/Gig from Soul Nomad (Infanticide, genocide, xenocide, Regicide, mind rape...really, it would just be easier to list the things that they DIDN'T do)...

...Basically the protagonist of any Nippon Ichi game has a 95% chance of being a gigantic dick. The only game that might be exempt is Phantom Brave, only because I haven't played it.

Edit: Derp, forgot to mention my favorite one. Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia. For an example of his dickness, he goes out of his way to murder people in cold blood (often in horrible ways, like drowning them) after turning them over to the authorities because he learns that they might get off lightly because of their wealth/position.

Cole mercer in infamous. I mean, i have understanding for the fact that the developers were trying to give the impression that "he does what he has to do" and in the beginning a lot of "Red" decisions are a bit ambigous (taking food for your friends and safeguard against starvation viz a viz giving it all away) but when his powers start snowballing, and he has the power to power entire city parts by himself, he could have been a hell of a lot of more sympathetic och at least have some cause for being a dick, like trying to rule people.

Now he just gives of a kind of, Mwuahahaha i am evil.
Do you mean Cole MacGrath, Mercer is the last name of the guy from Prototype. Maybe you were trying to be ironic, I can never tell via the medium of internet, but I thought I'd say something anyway. I can't think of anyone who hasn't been mentioned, but I guess the closest I've got is Bernard Marx from Brave New World. Yes I am aware that he is replaced roughly halfway through by John Savage, but the scenes that he appears in just paint him as a whiney annoying *****. As for game characters, I'd say the most irritating one that I have seen is the guy from Starhawks, he's just irritating, why doesn't someone just beat some sense into him, please.

Oh jesus, I was expecting someone to betray the party at some point seeing how it is an RPG but was not expecting the protagonist of the story to do it. A well place red-herring and some clever writing had me picking my jaw off the floor. XD

My vote is for Gerald from Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders.

OT: Alex Mercer. He kills a bunch of innocent people in order to do stuff like heal and advance the plot, and yet he's still played as a tragic hero rather than a complete dick. ...Then again, the 'complete monster' slot in the cast was already taken by the REAL Alex. The game is three years old. I'm not spoiling that much.
Doesn't matter how old the game is, a spoiler is still a spoiler.
Darth Vader is Luke's father, Norman Bates is his mother. Thelma and Louise, and Obi-Wan Kenobi die. Bruce Willis Is dead. Snape kills Dumbledore, Harry is the final horcrux, Rosebud is a sled, Soylent green is people. Donnie dies, Dil has a willy, Tyler Durden isn't real. Verbal is Keyser Soze, you are Darth Revan, the villagers sacrifice the policeman. The killer was inside the house, it was earth all along (And they blew it up, those maniacs), Maggie ends up a quadriplegic so Frankie kills her, the wizard is a fake and the butler did it.

Would you kindly worry less about years old spoilers half the world knows anyways?

Lightning is a total *****. Not only is she completely bland, she's just constantly got a stick up her ass. I felt sorry for Snow in one cutscene for what seemed like a totally uncalled for demeaning-fest by Lightning.
