Wait, Why the Hell is That Considered "Legendary?"

I agree with you perfectly. Avatar is the best movie ever, until the next bes movie ever gets made, then that one will lose its wonder when the next best movie ever comes out, then a new best movie ever will come out, and then another best movie ever will be made. When critics started calling Avatar the best movie ever, I thought "Wait, I thought the Dark Knight was the best movie ever."
However, some things are legendary to something. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but it is legendary, and so is Indianna Jones. For gaming, the legends are The Legend of Zelda and Doom. Music has legend like The Beetles and some other artists.

Now, the moral of this post, kids:

[HEADING=2] Being good is easy. Being legendary requires real talent and work.
And Lightsabers.
And nazi face meltings.
And elves.
And Pinky.
And saying hey to Jude.[/HEADING]

The Detroit garage scene EXPLODED into popular culture because of Jack White. Without him you wouldn't have The Strokes, the Black Keys, The Hives, Franz Ferdinand, etc--the list goes on.
....that's a good thing? I fucking hate those bands.

And I own their Elephant album. It's good, yes, but life altering? Really? I was more moved by the most recent An Cafe album.
Normally, I don't tend to agree with you, Julian, but I'm with you on this one.

OT: I don't see why Eminem is seen as a fucking hero. He's just a rapper. Same with Lil' Wayne and the others.
Because Eminem is one of the best rappers of all time, and many of his songs have actual meaning, unlike Lil' Wayne.

Like a new, not dead, white Tupac.

But, of course, since you don't like rap you think both of them are shit and they're songs are all about being tough and womanizing, right?

And if not, I apologize, but people need to realize music is opinion. Just because you don't take the time to actually know anything about a genre doesn't mean you're right, and stop pretending like their opinions are fact. It's fucking stupid.

Like the White Stripes for instance. I've seen so many critics and fans alike calling them "genre defining" or "legendary." But why though? They're a good band, yeah and I have some of their stuff, but "legendary?" No. Or even The Catcher in the Rye, which is considered to be the greatest piece of literature of the last 100 years, yet when I read it, I was annoyed, bored and just outright pissed off that it is held so highly amongst literate types. Can someone explain to me why these things are so heavily praised
I couldn't agree more.

Apologize now, then. Grovel. I respect him, I just don't like the genre, and his popularity.

Were you alive when these things came out? I tried to listen to Pet Sounds, which is often hailed as a landmark in American music, and I fucking hated it. The lyrics were retarded, the often-vaunted imaginative instrumentation amounted to little more than a theremin, and Brian Wilson is such an insufferable cock that I daydreamed about punching his smug face in while listening.
However, I'm sure that, if you had never heard of The Beatles, it was extremely impressive upon being released. It's just a fact of life that better things are made as time goes on. Old things seem less good in comparison, perhaps because we've been so exposed to their legacy.

Halo: Combat Evolved was a great game. I thought someone had made anoother Goldeneye. but then after halo 2, the serie's bright gold medallions crumbled into ash to me.
This, so much. If you weren't a gamer back when Halo came out you wouldn't understand. Even if you went back and played it now it seems generic. Its only generic because it defined every fps to come out after it. Things that are considered legendary have this affect, it literally redefines everything that comes after it in the genre.

If you hated video games, it would be meaningless to you even people who liked fps didn't like halo at the time. But you can't deny that its weapon system and gameplay have been copy pasta'd to death.

For example; I personally didn't like the movie Avatar. Yet, while I didn't enjoy it as much as a lot of people, I can easily say that it indeed is a good movie considering the astounding use of 3D and the amazing special effects.
It had half a billion dollar budget. That's pretty legendary right there. But even so, I think you're taking the term "legendary" too literally. It's like when people review a horror movie and say they were scared half to death. If they watch it again, do they die?

I think you're just overanalyzing hyperbole used to review something. Sure, maybe it doesn't deserve the title "legendary", but I'm pretty sure they don't literally believe it's going to be the thing of legends in hundreds of years to come.

Apple products may be a niche thing(a big niche mind you) but why does Steve Jobs hail all his creations as "groundbreaking". It feels like he took the wheel, made it shiny, used fancy over the top materials that does not benefit or effect it in any way, and making crazy profits off it.

You know what's still legendary, even now? Sliced bread. Who doesn't enjoy a sandwich every now and then?

Yes, but when I hear someone call The Beatles "legendary" and The White Stripes "legendary" I'd imagine they're putting them in the same league.

What are you talking about? Legendary was hard! Only a few hits and you have to respawn. And there's a jackal sniper behind every tree.

Jackals in the trees maaaan!

I just stopped questioning after a while. A lot of things can be considered revolutionary but very few can be considered actually good.

Edit: I got one. Neon Genesis Evangelion. It was a good show but it's not the greatest show evar. The story in particular deserves a sound beating. It just keeps building up and building up and than nothing. it pretty much scraps the story so someone up the ladder can fulfill there completely overly pretentious ambition for two episode and a movie (you know who you are). I don't want anyone giving me that it's all in the symbolism stuff. It's pretentious and full of deus ex machinas... In the end however it was enjoyable. The action was well choreographed and animated, and the characters were handled very well... I don't care what anyone says Shinji was a great character... and no he did not whine too much IMO...

I have to agree on the catcher in the rye part. It was fairly well written, but the main character, Holden Caulfield, is essentially just a douche. I didn't think of anything he did as inspiring or clever. He was just annoying. (especially the part where he called over a prostitute so he could sit and talk)

The best example I can think of on this subject is Half Life 2. The most average shooter ever made.
It's the story of a power-armored non-character as he saves the free world with two fistfulls of lead shot out of generic weapons at generically evil aliens while assisted by a shoehorned in love interest and a minority sidekick who happen to be the same person.
Do you ever get tired of sounding like a broken record and repeating this same mantra in every single thread which affords you the opportunity?
