I totally agree about the white stripes. Some of their songs have a good groove and are super catchy, but amazing, they are not.

I think the same about alot of popular music though, sorry I can't think of anything right now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz4dVof3mTc this is "Little Acorns" off of "Elephant." I know people who's lives this song saved.
I'm sure 'hold on' by good charlotte may have put pause to suicide, but that doesn't make it legendary.

I think in general we always either praise something we like to much or damn to hell something we think is below average. It's just a thing we do.

I think really to be classed as legendary you have to be remembered over a long period :p. You know, the legend part. I'm not sure why but when I think of legendary I think of military/empire kind of things like alexander the great etc.

You are not alone in disliking The Catcher in the Rye. I honestly can't understand why people liked it, let alone loved it.

I can't see what damn near everyone saw in the Halo series. It just wasn't fun to me.

Everything comes down to opinion though.
With Halo, people consider it "Legendary" because Halo:CE is the foundation for all Modern Shooters. I know there was Quake and Doom and other games, but they have a different feel to Halo, but most shooters now adays are transferable from one to the other right down to playing Halo:CE without you feeling lost or like your playing something outdated.

The problem is that true legends (as in something that the majority considers great for many years to come) are never realized in their time. They are always something unique that went against the grain at first, but then defined a whole new genre or style or cliche in the process.

Then of course it snowballs, everyone starts incorporating that new whatever into what they are doing and eventually something emerges that does it better than the original (or the new knock-offs become the default standard, like pop music I guess. Whatever happened to hip-hop or rock? Now we just have this weird poppy-club music and wimpy 'we're all emotional and shit' shit in the top forty. Past number ones are legendary (Nirvana, for instance) but Eminem's latest is nothing like his first chart toppers. Its all popified or something. This is a really long side-note huh?) and then the new stuff, while not genre-defining or legendary, is still really, really good and everyone goes apeshit over donkeyturds, so to speak.

So if anyone says that some new movie is legendary you should have a legal right to hit them upside their head for that nonsense.

Sliced Bread. It's not hard to slice some bread. There has been some much better time saving inventions throughout time. How about the Internal combustion engine? The Messerschmidt that birthed the jet engine? (I'm sure it was the Messerschmidt, wasn't it?)

Just saying. Slicing bread isn't nearly as difficult as flying over the Atlantic.

I'm not a big fan of hype in general.

I want to see something for myself and form my own opinion. There are a few people I trust to render a relatively objective opinion on something, but beyond that? I'll make up my own mind, thanks.

I feel that Bioshock is overrated. I just don't see why it is so beloved.
People liked its story; it may not have neccessarily been original, but it was well paced and complimented by spectacular voice acting and atmosphere (I'm a fan I case you hadn't figured that out yet). However, I do agree that compared to other shooters at the time, and even earlier shooters, that the gameplay was mediocre, possibly even shitty by some standards. Normally this would be forgivable in games like say, Silent Hill, but those games are horror-survival, where you are supposed to have a sense of ever-impending doom, and that's definately not what Bioshock was going for, but the gameplay was average none-the-less.

I never understood why Hamburgers, Sausages and Bacon are that popular...

Anyways, other than that it's basically most games that I have played.

Alicia Keys is considered [insert compliment here.]

She's awful. Also the fact that she's constantly on radio irritates me.

I totally agree with you on the whole "legendary" review concept. I don't know if you watch sports, but every year it's the "best superbowl ever!" or "best NBA finals series ever!!!" to every sportscaster. I guess they just have terrible memories.
That was actually kinda inversed for the FIFA World Cup this year. A lot of people (like sports commentators) have been saying that it was kind of crappy this year.

Personally I have to second Half Life 2. I thought it was only kind of average to be honest. I mean it was fun but as people have mentioned it was very, very average.

There's a difference between your enjoyment and the quality of the product. Separate the two, then factor in the general perception of the masses.

halo for example is a standard shooter ultimately with various 'power' weapons. Yet it is viewed as one of the best shooters of all time, because of the fact that when it came out. There was nothing like it on consoles.
Fixed it for you.

But you have a point. When something comes to the public awareness is much more important than (objective) quality. I mean, I love me some Nirvana cuz I was 12-13 back then and "Smells like teen spirit" was the best thing ever created, but most of what Cobain did was just shit.
Thanks for the fix, but yeah that's my point. Then nostalgia rides it way through the fan base. Mario, Sonic, etc. Are good examples of these.

The Great Gatsby. I never had to read this in school. We got to read Frank Herbert. Changed my life.
One of my brother's lit teachers thinks however, that this is the greatest novel of all time and that it is a stellar commentary on class and society. So I read it. And then flipped through it to make sure I hadn't missed anything. Guess what? I don't think the people who read this book and think it's great, actually know what the author was trying to say. It looks like he was really trying to say "Fuck everyone, fuck off." and people somehow got confused and considered gatsby a hero of some kind.
I had to read the Tropic of Cancer. What a pathetic and thinly veiled attempt to shock people, while claiming that it's intent is not to shock you with such a mundane word. Well if **** is such a mundane word, why the hell did the author find it necessary to use it as noun, verb, adjective...the book isn't even any good if you replace the thousands and thousands of the word's usage and try to come up with something interesting on your own.
I think people call them classics because let's face it, it's not like there were thousands of authors back in the day like there are now, it's not like some shlub with a good story idea would have been able to write, print and distribute his book on his own. Back in the day you needed connections and money. Hell, even until about 1970 you could barely get published unless you have a degree from a university, or wanted to write complete trash for a pulp company.

hell if I know as to why some movies like Avatar and a band like WS are called legendary. In my humble opinion its just that opinion. If some one calls a band or movie or some other thing legendary and you agree then right on. But if Ebert or Roper say that RANDOM Movie ABXYZ IN HD 3D is Legndary and you don't agree then thats good to. Know if everyone says that and you disagree then I guess the opinions of the majority determine wether history will deem them legendary or not

Pro tip: the extent to which you enjoy something has no bearing whatsoever on how influential, boundary pushing, or innovative it was.

Things become "legendary" because they advance an art form, not because they are necessarily "good" form a pop-culure point of view.

ex: Ulysses is practically unreadable to the general population, but that doesn't mean it isn't an all-time great piece of literature.

This saved peoples lives? It´s fucking terrible...I personally know Metal guitarists who can play better while drunk and on fire...
Now my ears ring from the stupid tune and that guys voice.
Thats completely unfair, most metal guitar players play better while drunk, If you can manage to find one who can play while drunk and on fire, then they'll be declared the best guitar player in the world by default, no matter how bad they play.

This is a world-renowned piece of minimalist art:

Is it good? that's open to interpretation.

But it, (and others like it) were deeply influential in the art community, both as a means of communication between artists, and as an exploration of style, aesthetic, and purpose.
