Start playing proper strategy games. Starcraft 2.

I know you're not keen, so get your hands on TF2 and I really enjoyed Bioshock too.

TF2 for the PC is so much better than the console version, technically more maps, more weapons and most probably a better community. To be honest though, just download steam and have a look at some games you yourself would be interested in.

Zeno Clash is pretty awesome. It's not pc exclusive though. And the XBLA version is better.
still worth a try though.

Two that I haven't seen anyone mention yet:
Lugaru (It's great when you realize how the controls really work (really simple controls just not self explanatory)) it also has a demo.
http://www.wolfire.com/lugaru

The Penumbra games (scary as hell and have some really good puzzles)
https://store3.esellerate.net/store/checkout/CustomLayout.aspx?s=STR9929807578&pc=&page=OnePageCatalog.htm

Both are indie games so you can feel good about supporting them directly.

i'm glad you checked out killing floor because thats an awesome game.
Team fortress 2 is a great game (sure you haven't heard that yet
You said you liked fps games so i'd also suggest getting the half life series or red faction: guerilla.

Almost any Valve game (Orange Box, Day of Defeat Source, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2...) is far superior in the PC than it's console counterpart, also the Valve games are famous for getting a lot of free updates that adds a lot of neat stuff on their games (recently they added achievements for Half-Life 2 and upgraded the graphics for that game) and you can also download (or make your own) mods for them.

Also you need to check out the Call of Duty games (except Modern Warfare 2, wich sadly sucks hard time). Also Battlefield 2 is simply awesome, it's a bit old now, but if you don't mind the graphics, it's still a lot of fun and pretty intense. But if you want something newer, you can also check out Battlefield Bad Company 2, wich I've heard it's way better than Modern Warfare 2 and certainly better than Battlefield 2.

If you crave for graphics and don't want to stray too much away from the console shooters, you can check out the Crysis games wich to this day, still has some of the best graphics to ever grace your monitor.

Oblivion and Fallout 3 are far superior on the PC, wich has way better graphics, smoother FPS (if you say you have a neat PC, you can run them at silky smooth 60 fps and up) better controls (Mouse/Keyboard FTW), you can customize the music for those games at your heart's content (they accept anything wich ends in .mp3) and, again, you can download some neat mods for them.

The PC is completely abscent of JRPGS so you don't need to worry about that. Good RPGs on the PC, well, maybe the Mass Effect series and Dragon Age. Also Torchlight is pretty awesome and very cheap.

The PC also has it's fair share of good Indie stuff, like Braid, And Yet It Moves, Machinarium, Aquaria, Plants vs Zombies, Penumbra Overture, Penumbra Black Plague (pretty strange and great survival horror games), World of Goo, Shatter... Those are the ones that comes up to my mind right now :p.

The Unreal series (especially Unreal Tournament 2004) are still pretty awesome and kicks lots of Halo asses. If you want neat graphics, you can get Unreal Tournament 3 and it's also pretty cheap.

No strategy and turn based games?, well, that's a shame, I'd recommend you Civilization IV wich is THE best strategy-turn based game (or at least until Civilization 5 comes out). Also Company of Heroes is THE best RTS ever made (Starcraft can eat it's heart out).

And props for checking out Guild Wars, it's a great MMO and a great alternative for those who want to stay away from World of Warcraft. If you're a bit patient, you can wait for Guild Wars 2 to come out, wich is looking fantastic.

You just can't go wrong with the PC, it's simply awesome =).

My suggestions for great FPS are
STALKER: Call of Pripyat (latest one, why bother with the originals? Unless you want to play all of them...)
Metro 2033 (I like it more than STALKER, more linear but awesome graphics and it's very cool)
Cryostasis is a really cool game I'm quite enjoying (tho it has some issues)

Also, all these games are very demanding GPU wise. And the last 2 are PhysX capable, if you have an NVidia card.

I have to post in this thread ...
On PC, backwards compatibility is a big issue, as many games don't work properly on new rigs.

Having said that, I'm just going to make a recommendation for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
It's an RPG which uses valve's source engine (albeit a beta version). Shooting is best done in 1st person view, and melee in 3rd person.

There are problems, however.
Most notable is the gamebreaking bugs. Activision made the studio rush the title out, and the company went out of business before patching them all out.
The official 1.2 patch needs to be supplemented by a fanpatch. I recommend Acrimonius and Tessera's 5.04AT patch, as it adheres as closely to the developer's vision as possible, but it may be a little difficult to find.
The other issue is widescreen. The game was made at a time when the vast majority of monitors were 4:3 aspect ratio, and it doesn't come with widescreen support. There's a mod that fixes that, and while most of the game looks good enough, the head-up display (health and blood bars) looks stretched, and some of the cutscenes look a little strange.
Finally, I'm not sure any of this even works under an operating system newer than windows XP.

It's a great game, though.
So .. welcome to PC gaming. Where getting games to run can be .. challenging.

Neverwinter Nights is pretty good. Multiplayer and lack of mod support aside, it's the better game in my book.

Dragon Age is superior in most respects on the pc and worthy of playing if you have not already played it on a console.

Fallout and Oblivion have excellent mdding communities which provide sufficient reason to purchase and play either game again.

Just like to add two more PC exclusive games you might want. Nexuiz and Urban Terror. Both free, both with strong multiplayer support (Nexuiz has singleplayer and you can unofficially get bots in UT), and both with informative gameplay videos on their respective websites and/or on youtube. Meaning I can stop writing this forum post.

Orange Box. There, you can live the rest of the year with it.
No, I can't.
2 good games (Portal and TF2) aren't enough to keep anyone for a year, and I don't see why I should pay for the 3 other not-so-good games.
HL2 is "not-so-good". Are you even a PC gamer? Or do you just hate liner games.

Get steam, get the Orange box, play those for the next 12 years or until episode 3 comes out (which should be about 17 years). All are shooters and all of them are exceedingly good.

I'm a PC gamer, yes.
You can check my Steam.
And I find Half Life 2 to be half-okay.
Well then you can think of them as a Half-Bonus since buying it just for TF2 and Portal would still be cheaper than buying them separately. :D

Crysis Maximum Edition. If you need to, you can use a controller. It show cases many how PC design in different than that of consoles, not to mention it's a very good game and a nice benchmarker.
