The new IG codex is coming out soon, so, as an IG player myself, I'd reccomend you take them into consideration. We can provide you:

Massed infantry, the cheapest in the game (4pts per model), armed with the same heavy and special weapons as marines, at the basic ballistic skill of every other army (BS3, you hit half the time)

Fragile but terrifically powerful elite infantry: Our stormtroopers, when the new dex comes out, will have AP3 hellguns. Put simply, their basic weapons will ignore the armour of every creature in the galaxy save things with invulnerable, cover or 2 up saves.

We have Valkyries. Not sure what those are? Think the helicopter scene from Apocalypse Now- flying death machines that can lay down a barrage of missile fire from any angle.

Tanks- More tanks than anyone can shake a stick at. A lot of new kit is going to be coming our way, tanks, artillery, flamethrower tanks...

Mortars- no one else has them.

I should warn you though- the Guard is a demanding, punishing army to play. Currently, we have been seriously nerfed by the 'Kill Points' stupidity (as if VPs weren't a much better idea) and the new ork dex. We rely on a strange combination of strategy, tactics and brute force to win our batltes.

I've played orks ever since 40k started but I would recommend my other army (Space Marines) to start off.
You don't have to paint many for a full army and can be very straightforward.

If you're trying to get started with a friend, try and go half on the starter box. The latest comes with Marines & Orks.

If you want to buy the things cheap of the internet, I'd suggest Wayland Games. It's not official, and they don't have everything, but I've found it's fairly reliable...and the whole 40% off everything helps aswell, of course ;)
Here's the link, if you want to try it out:

Hope it helps!

Most people tend to say Space Marines, but It is with the 5th edition not that good, you have to get the hang of the "combat tactics" special rule, I would advise you to play Chaos Space marines, they play almost the same, but have less complicated rules.
And Chaos has Khorne Berzerkers, which are the best assault troops in the game in my opinion.

Ive got an attic with a fairly large army of space marines, with a squad of eldar guardians a small tau army. It is fun if you have some people to play with, but everyone i knew stopped and so did i as i just had nothing to do with them. You cant go wrong with space marines or chaos space marines, they are both good all rounders and newbie friendly. But i would read up o nthe backstory first and look at what other people have collected so you get a feel for the game.

Thank you for the tip about a less complicated force.

Personally, i'd start with something easy like Orks or Space Marines, I collect Chaos Space Marines as they're so much fun to convert and paint, and like one of the above posters said, nothing beats a good squad of Khorne Beserkers.

If you do decide to buy, buy off ebay, you can get most of the box sets on there for like 15% cheaper than GW.

Just checked out the site. Gave a once over and it seems to be cheaper than most of the items as I see them on other sites.

go to the training days at your local Games Workshop store. get a basic tutoring, bfore you decide that you want to get fully into it. as a starting army, i'd advise strognly either marines, or chaos. don't do what i did and jump in at ye olde Catachan Jungle fighters and move onto Dark Eldar. not the smartest decision i ever made.

now i'm with the Demonhunters after about 5 years of getting my ass handed to me, because of high 'to save' rolls (5+ on both armies). i havn't played in nearly 3 years, because education became too intense for me to handle both at once.

Honestly for a starter army i'd recomend Sisters of Battle, theyve got half of the elitness of SMs but with the numbers of other armies, so if you make a mistake youve still got more left unlike with the SM's Plus the Inquisitor leaders can make for some good personalisation with imagination.

And definatly get the Rulebook before anything else

I'd say start with orks. They're the funnest to paint and play with. In a game there a little difficult to use *hint, use a crap-ton of grots as a moving barrier and, once close enough, jump storm boyz in to take out INF with big guns. Also, use the Deff Dread to soak up DMG and take out vehicles, its "'arda, stompya an shootya den da udda boyz!"*
Plus, more room for creativity as they dont have a set uniform or paint job *although you do have to stick to specific colors*.
Hell, I bought a wartrukk *not to play with, but just to paint* and a Ghazgull Mag Uruk Thrakka model and had the most fun painting a model then ive ever had *except with GMUT, hes a ***** to assemble/paint but still fun to play with*.

The thing with orcs though is that they take a long time to paint and paint well. I have Space Marines, and my commander easily took two hours, not including the conversion work I did. Some models don't take long, escpecially if you're good. But eh practice makes perfect.

Actually, the only race that DOESN'T have a set of colors is probably the Tyranids. You can paint them however you want. Of course, you can do that with any race, but in other races like space marines and orcs there are certain Chapters or whatever the Orcs have. Warbands, i think, although I'm probably wrong. They have special rules and you have to paint your models accordingly, to a degree at least.

If you want to go all the way and then some in the creativity department, get space marines. Make up you own chapter. Then write your own codex for the chapter. Like me.

Start with Space Marines; they're the easiest to learn, you can paint them pretty much however you want, and your money to piece/points ratio stays low. Although everyone will think you're a n00b unless you play one of the specialized factions. (Space Wolves were pretty fucking unfair to play against last time I remember)

Well its called a hobby not a speed contest. im assuming that your doing this cos youve got EXTRA TIME, and need a filler thats fun too. Orks are the craziest, the funniest and coolest looking out of all the factions.
