well either they will balance it in a way that makes it not true to form, or give the other races Some... counter balance... somehow...

Not canonwise. Canonwise a Space Marine tactical squad could take down an entire IG army without much difficulty, they're far more powerful than any Ork below warboss status.

The Tabletop game tones down SM's to a massive degree, if the MMO were to stay even vaguely on canon it would have to either be hideously unbalanced or human only. Personally I would love a Human only one but it ain't going to happen.
I'm not gonna argue with you, since I'm not fully knowledgeable about WH40K so much as I have a good understanding of how it works, but how are you saying that according to canon (which, I take it, is a word you're using instead of 'history' or 'mythology' or 'here-say') a Space Marine squad can take down a Imperial Guard army? Did it happen one day? The ultramarines got peeved at some upstart general? And how big is an "Imperial Guard Army'; unless you're talking board game, which i assume would have a definition on how big an army is, then you might as well be saying "one 2cm long Space Marine string is longer than an [unspecified] Imperial Guard string." That's no the best simile because lots of people say any length of string is infinitely long, but u get my point.
Canon, which I call fluff is basically the official history like you guessed. An example of how tough spacemarines are meant to be not based on the table top game which for the sake of fairness has to be balanced but to the history or lore of the universe in which it takes place.

* [853.M41] During the decisive moments of the Battle of Steel Cross, Captain Cortez single-handedly slew the Ork Warlord and his entire bodyguard. Cortez had managed to disarm the Ork leader with a twist of his torso after the Ork's sword had become embedded in Cortez's ribs.
* [867.M41] Captain Cortez breaks through Eldar lines despite suffering 17 wounds including stab through one of his hearts and two heavy weapons hits.
* [903.M41] Captain Cortez fights through the entire Kardian six week campaign without supplies after they had been lost to enemy fire during deployment.

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Captain_Cortez

He is a little tougher then most spacemarines but this is the sort of level they fight at lore wise. I was going to show some more examples but I can't find any at the moment online and I can't be bothered to dig my old books out.

To stray a bit from the canon vs. everything-else discussion (heh), I'm still amazed by war40k. How come that universe has so much greatness? Maybe it's a childhood influence (i first saw w40k related stuff when i was 8 or 9) but this whole idea sings and dances is wholy light for me (in a non-stripper fashion). The atmosphere, the design, the je-ne-sais-quoi...

I've never seen anything quite like it.

Two thoughts:

- Just have Space Marines vs. Chaos Space Marines. Relatively easy to balance to the point of both sides being almost exactly the same, and that leaves every other race as stuff to kill.

- Or base it around Inquisitors.

The point is, and so many people seem to have forgotten this, to have fun. Yes having a 'cost/benefit ratio' is good but frankly when people start looking at the builds they make and picking apart every detail like mad to make the 'best' build or pick out which class is 'best' doesn't that just ruin the whole game? You should play Imp guard because you like Imp guard or play sisters because you like sisters. Just don't play Tau because they should have been wiped out back at the start of thigns. Stupid Xenos.

But seriously All the races are going to be playable, its obviously going to have some balance and people focus on it too much. Is it really the fault of the designers if people are twinks? Anyone who has to be happy by making a build so they can go around laughing and claiming to crush everyone seriously needs to have their games taken away. just make the play style different and get them close enough to where its not a blood bath with any one unit, which would not be hard at all.

Its not like any other Warhammer game in history has stuck to the Canon, why on earth would this one?

Fucking seconded. YES!!!!!!

I just hope my piece of crap computer can run it...I don't care, IT WILL BE MINE!

Sweet to see how they do it. Having how many Space Marines would get old but how are you going to balance an imperial guardsman against a Space Marine?

And combat's gonna be interesting, though it could suck for all I care, I just wanna chainsword.

Edit: Just speculating but they will probably focus weaker groups in squads so that if you are imperial guard you get 5-10 troops so you can balance against a Space Marine.
And as playable races go they'll probably just make it so that you pick a race, pick a class and go out and kill everything else.

I don't want a 40K MMO, I'd would prefer if they made some games based off of some of GW's early stuff. A Space Hulk game would be great.

solution to problem of space marines vs imperial guard, imperial guard have snipers... and more ranged armour units... and ogrins... space marines are better in close, but you can't deny the power of basilisks they kinda hurt... alot... and since they are making a warhammer 40k game they better keep the armoured assets in otherwise it becomes a pointless infantry skirmish so i mean just balance it so the imperial guard get access to more vehicular resources, and it balances guys come on think inside the big picture not just in infantry.
PS. Hellhounds much in the way of meltyness :D

As nice an idea as a 40K mmo is, it just doesn't add up on paper. Space marines + power amour + bolter = more powerful than anything individually bar a chaos space marine, and you're almost guaranteed they wouldn't be playable. The only way to make it even slightly balanced is to leave space marines off the playable list, but then who's going to play it? GW sales show that the SM's outsell every other army from all of their games combined, so if they were to be excluded.... there's really no way to make it balanced enough to work as an mmo.

40K would work much better as a battlefield type 3rd person shooter.

Considering the popularity of the Warhammer mmo, the 40k one is sure to go gold eventually.

I might even join in and I never mmorpg.
Any balance issues can be rectified by supplying additional resources like in the tabletop game. Sure playing a IG Sgt won't make you the most burly but what if you were accompanied by AI squad of redshirts or had access to one of the best tanks in the galaxy?
I question how the tank would work. Does it randomly pop into existence with a summons(like WoW's mounts)? Or does it just park itself outside when it's not being used?
That's probably a question better answered by MMORPGers. I imagine an airdrop or something like that (like in mercenaries) which can be used for tanks and honor guard types.

Anyone here tried Valkyria Chronicles? I would love to see a Warhammer 40K game with that style of gameplay.

i definitely believe that this game will do well if it becomes a computer-game version of 'inquisitor'- the specialist gw boardgame. if it plays like that then there will be no need to try and balance the races. low-level space marines would start with low stats and scout armour, and as they gain levels they get better stats and armour. this could work for all the races eg tau: the lowly fire warrior progresses, becoming a shas'ui, then donning one of the types of battlesuit armour, gaining better weapons and stats.

and anyway, sure, a space marine will have a bolter and power armour, but if an imperial finds a plasma gun, all they have to do is find some cover, then vaporise the marine! easy.

this game will epicaly fail if it uses the WoW unreal system of play eg; tau hits marine with railgun, marine loses 100000 health, but still has 99999899999 left. marine kills tau in close combat....ye because that is fair.

:O you insulted the robes!!!!! That was uncalled for!
Sorry I always confuse Dark Angels with the Sisters of Battle...I think it is the dresses mixed with the lack of beards. You just don't look as manly as us Space Wolves...though I guess you are not as bad as the Ultra Smurfs. This all reminds me that I need to start working more on my Space Wolves Army and finish up my World Eaters. Blood for the Blood God! Skulls for the Skull Throne! Whoops forget you noted the taint of heresy! :p
