I used to make myself in PS2 wrestling games. Nothing better than looking yourself getting a steel chair in the face a bit hungover sunday morning. Also, tag teaming with the Undertaker against Santa Claus & Jesus.
I just had to read that three times to make sure I got that right. Perhaps if you were a pirate it would be even better.

I'd try, but if I remember right, the character creator was a bit lacking on wooden legs and eyepatches...

Well wooden legs aren't a necessity, and you'd have to allow some artistic license. But make it so.

Ahem, I think you mean "Cyborg Pirate Ninja Jesus", thank you. What, are me and my bi-partisan ideas invisible over here? Huh? HUH!?

I use to spend time doing that but after a while of getting bored of it, I just make them look ridiculous. I tried to make my guy look like the Demoman from TF2, only with bushier facial hair.

Only game in which I actually tried making myself, I've yet to find a game that has my skin tone as a proper option.

Also, it's still pretty badly done in The Sims 2, here. Less facial hair, and my nose is a bit bigger, but meh. People say it ressembles me anyhow.

Well I just thought that perhaps that was a touch too ambitious for a mere wrestling game to handle.

Perhaps, but he should at least try to reach for the stars, or at least the roof of the wrestling arena.

Yeah, just to get my f-n nose look a bit like real life was work, I don't even want to think about the "cyborg pirate ninja Jesus me" stuff... Well, you should see my nose to get that, heh. Anyway, what was the first game to offer a chance to look like yourself? For me it was those wrestling games...

Pirates? Pah. Give me vikings any day. They had the pirate schtick down and then some a thousand years before those grog-swilling Johnny-come-latelies showed up.

I don't put a lot of thought into my avatars. The only games I've played recently with character screens are the KOTORs, and in my most recent play-through of KOTOR1 I picked a bald, bearded dude because I thought he looked like Ming the Merciless from the 1980 Flash Gordon film, and in KOTOR2 I picked a black woman because I thought she was pretty and had awesome dreadlocks. Even they involved somewhat more thought than usual by my standards just because of the length of time I'd be spending looking over their shoulder once prepared.

I always try to resemble myself as much as possible when I want to be immersed. Making some ridiculously stupid looking character just takes away from the game and makes you seem like an idiot imo.

its just so weird and unnatural, you should be declared gay just by THINKING about making a female character if yer a dude.
While I don't play female characters often, and I know this is going to just be reiterating things, which would you prefer looking at? Rough, hard, hairy male butt or deliciously round female booty for the next 20+ hours? See, I've totally just proven how much of a gay nancy pants you are.

Which, given I so rarely play female characters, perhaps says something about me as well. Hrm.
Sole reason why my MGO character if a girl. But she doesn't look like one because I am covering her up to look like a male soldier. Also its pretty damn funny if one of said horny 14 year olds start talking about having a girl on the team and then I politely respond. "I have a 8==> just so you know."

That's basically the only reason I've ever made a female character, at least for online games. To see how people react when I point out I too have male parts. Then again, I suspect most of the people playing villainous schoolgirls with those high skirts on CoV are probably 'packing' as well.

If there is any customization at all, I will make my character look like Samuel L Jackson. I firmly believe Samuel L Jackson makes everything better. Yes, everything.

A generic stubbly dude? Odd choice, but usually easy to achieve I guess.
You forgot the glasses :(

It is weird, though, that in FO3, I have a character that looks like Freeman and armor that looks like the HEV suit minus the Lambda (recon armor, I think).

Surely making a female character is a sign of heterosexuality, as you're staring at a female ass for the entire game rather than a male one. Admittedly they're pixellated asses, but the point is that wanting to stare at a female ass rather than a male one isn't terribly gay.

What I'm trying to convey in polite terms is I think your above statements are quite simply smacktarded.
Ive made an avatar of my GF at the time in Oblivion - like Amnestic said if im going to be staring at an avatar for hours while playing, she may as well be hot.
There is third party software that lets you take a few photos and scan them, then it gives you the exact settings for the oblivion character creator to make the person in the picture. It apparently really good but I havent used it.

Except for one time in The Sims, I don't think I've ever even considered it. I don't think it'd add to the immersion at all, I'M not there, my character is though, and it doesn't matter how my character looks, as long as it looks like my character :p

Yes, I'm one of those creepy roleplaying types, I'm also even more creepy for being a transsexual roleplay, at least if you're like Grimm, because that means I almost always make characters of the opposite physical sex. I do however enjoy roleplaying as characters of both genders, so I make a few male characters. And just to nitpick, making a female character if you're a guy doesn't make you gay. First off, it would (if anything, I think you could enjoy playing Tomb Raider, if you just got a bit more perspective on yourself) be a clear sign of transsexuality (if anything, I don't believe it has meaning). If it'd make you "gay" depends solely on your actions in-game. If you play a female character so that you can hit on the boys ingame, that might be a sign, but then again, most games are geared towards a male audience playing male characters, so in almost all games all female npcs are suddenly lesbians when you are. Hitting on those would either make you a homosexual transgendered male, which I guess is gay, or a very normal straight guy with a fetish for lesbians.

Then of course there's the "who's ass would I rather look at during play" argument, but people have brought that up already.

Damn... Why are my posts always so long?

I can't make my character look like me. my beard is a different colour to my hair, and the game won't do this.
