Ways that Oblivion is superior to Skyrim

I couldnt disagree more with the OP.

To keep it short: I thought Oblivion was a mediocre game at best, with poor storytelling, poor exploration with similar/identical dull dungeons and terrain that turned it into a mindless grind. The AI was astonishingly stupid and I had massive problems getting myself immersed in a pretty looking and big but rather dull Cyrodil.

Skyrim? In my oppinion Skyrim is one of the best games, if not THE best game, Bethesda has released. I wouldnt dream of giving it 10/10 like some overhyped people have done, but Skyrim is a massive jump from Oblivion in quality. It has better visuals, better(but still struggling) storytelling, better fighting and above all, a much better nature and exploration-feel.
Its especielly that last thing that sort of settled it for me, since the open world exploration is sort of the big point with Bethesda games. Skyrim nails that to the wall with as close to perfection as is perhaps possible, even if it falls behind on a few other things.

I cant really find any point where Oblivion is better then Skyrim except perhaps the creating own spells-thing. Although that is small considering the tons of other things weighting in on Skyrims favor.

The UI was better, which is not something I ever thought I would say. The Shivering Isles was a great addon (I refuse to use the term ´DLC´ for this). Oh, I don't recall the physics engine and a hanging pot conspiring together to murder me.

- The UI is ugly compared to the one in Oblivion. It looks like it just has a white/gray frame.

- The UI was designed for looks (that's a failed attempt) rather than functionality. You can't sort your inventory, you can't view your character when equipping stuff.
I disagree with these 3. The interface not only looks much much better than Oblivion IMO, but it actually works better as well. Navigating the map in the PS3 was the most painful thing ever, and having to scroll through 200 keys to get to my azura's star every time is not better functionality in my eyes.

As for the character creation, I see absolutely nothing about it that's worse, aside for the hair colour being more limited (and more realistic).

When I stepped in Skyrim it felt weird and I didn't like the changes at all, but 20 hours in all I can say is that I feel every single aspect of it is better than Oblivion

I have found Skyrim to be a step down from Oblivion in a few ways:

- No athletics or acrobatics. Really, I want to run faster and jump further as I progress in the game.

Well, there are a few and I know there are more because I have read about them on the Bethesda forums. What say you?
None. I cannot think of a single way that Oblivion is superior to Skyrim.
- The world was no where near this alive
- BETTER UI. This is a thing of taste so, please, stop using it as ammunition and making it sound like every person ever agrees with you. I don't.
- Less skills
- Less things to do
- More role playing mechanics in Skyrim then in Oblivion
- Mr Potato head does not make an appearance in Skyrim
- Everything is more subtle in Skyrim, for example, the Thieves guild markings you can find in towns
- It doesn't hold your hand as much as Oblivion did
- More caves
- More caverns
- More ruins
- More enemies
- Better enemy levelling system
- Whole new game engine and modding toolset coming our way
- As for performance, you got it on a console. That is your own problem and your own fault.

Oh my, I suppose it was a matter of time before people started to complain that Skyrim's predecessor was better. This is Mirrowwind is better than Oblivion all over again.

... ... Really it is one of the least used things in most character builds. It really really should just be part of another skill! Yes I do have a thief in Oblivion that has a hilarious high Ath/Acro skill.. but really it doesn't changes that much.

- The character creator is worse than the one in Oblivion (which was pretty bad too)
Oh Orcs are ugly but they always we're and Kaijit eeh well they cats. I love how in Skyrim the argonians really look freaking well freaking. Overall a huge improvement! Not because it is just more beautiful instead it is functional. Some things are just ugly!

Mmm again disagree it works fine... and that is what matters!

- The UI was designed for looks (that's a failed attempt) rather than functionality. You can't sort your inventory, you can't view your character when equipping stuff.
Now that is fair! Indeed it is on alphabet kinda a bummer but mods are in the making to fix that

It is a heavier game, much heavier, it looks better functional better. BSure here and there textures might still look a bit meh but shader work and light is much better. So it is heavier

In short it is a better game.. well 5 years after we expect that. But this much better.. I didn't

In their tongue he is Movakiin, Mudcrab-born!

I dunno, man, doesn't sound quite the same.
Movakiin why not!

Which is kinda funny because Skyrim for the most part has this lifeless gray all over it. I would take the colour of Oblivion any day over Skyrim, but that is also one of the few thing that I would take from Oblivion over Skyrim.

Looks much better? Seriously, how can a plain black background with a gray frame look better than a wood grain style image?

Navigating the map on the PS3 is painful but ONLY on the PS3, on the 360 and the PC the map works fine. The right stick is not sensitive enough on the PS3 and it seems like Beth could easily fix that if they cared about the PS3.

If you have 200 keys in your inventory, that's your fault. Buy a house and dump them in a chest, drop them or give them to a shopkeeper.

Realism is often a detriment to gameplay. I have been playing RPG's since the SNES and I always made my character in Oblivion have blue hair. A throwback to Breath of Fire. Can't even do that now because choices that aren't realistic aren't allowed. You don't have to make a blue haired character but why does Bethesda care if I do?

Skyrim doesn't have a backwards skill system where you're better off selecting your least used skills to be "Major" skills.

It's like some people believe that only positive things should be said about Skyrim.

Yes well, I never said Oblivion has a better level scaling system did I?

Oh here's your problem:

>PS3

Yep, the PS3 has some issues with save files. I play on the 360 while my friend plays on the PS3. Guess who's still able to play their games for over 2 hours without it lagging?

As for some of the other stuff you mentioned...

The UI is objectively ugly. I don't mind the simplistic look to it. And being able to view items inside your inventory is pretty nice too. As for not being able to view your character in the menu... oh no! You have to exit it to view your character. The horror! The UI can be a bit of a mess at times when you have tons of stuff in your inventory, but that's whats favorites are for!

I much prefer the character models in Skyrim to Oblivion. Seriously, most of the user made characters in Oblivion (at least without mods) were rather meh at best. Otherwise they were rather ugly. Skyrim characters generally look better.

The lack of acrobatics and athletics in Skyrim is a bit sad, how would it work with the perks system? Run faster? Run even more faster? Run really really, really good looking faster?

Plus, there are alot of things I like in Skyrim over Oblivion. The dual wielding system (for both spells and weapons) is pretty nice. I like being able to choose between a one-handed weapon and some sort of spell or two spells or two of the same type of spells or whatever.

And no classes is great. I'm not limited to a couple key skills when it comes to leveling up. I can level up whatever I want and if mid-game I find I just don't like what I've been leveling, I can always switch to something else! Or just pick up another skill that I find is useful.

Yes me too. I know it is considered kiddy to prefer brighter colors to bland ones but I prefer the brighter colors.

Also some of the meadows in Oblivion were just so beautiful. That is something that Skyrim can not do to me because of the lack of bright colours.

Since I can't hear your tone.

If you sound like you want to have a nice discussion:

I don't know, I like Skyrim more..
I didn't think about the details, but just the feeling as a whole that I got from playing both games.
I guess it is the environment that draws me into it, especially the new factions and guilds.

If you sound arrogant or like some of the other wannabe smart gamers that just want to sound cool but fail miserably:

If you like Oblivion, sell your copy of Skyrim and play Oblivion again.

I don't see the problem here?

Oh wait, you wanted to show how you are different from the mainstream that loves Skyrim right now, or just how many flaws you can find in a game that almost everybody loves right now. Good job!
I can give you a suggestion on how to sound even smarter and cooler: Rant about Modern Warfare! That will impress everyone

Either way, have fun with Oblivion, it really is a great game :)
