"I-I'm okay." He said, then popping his neck. "I've been a Maintainer for twenty years, and five of those years were spent training in the armed law enforcement to get used to this suit. I've been to so many worlds with so many hazards about them. I'm not used to full scale war. No one in the D'ni race ever is because... we're in exodus trying to sustain our own lives underground." It has been a year since I was taken away from my parents and last time I saw Captain Ethan Orwell. The once loving dream, dashed away when I became a Vanguard. Still... I get to talk with my parents every once in a while, so its not entirely too bad. But it gets lonely.
Girls and boys are always separated for our classes. We learn history, science and math... Its strange how fast we are going through things and yet we all understand it all. I'm only 7 years old now and yet I feel we are learning something more.
The older kids look at us like we are... What was the word? "Little shits?" I don't know. But they aren't mad at us; no nothing like that. Sometimes I feel like I can understand their thoughts, their emotions, their loneliness.
But now. I'm just all alone in this room. The doctors have left after they set me up to some machine. Everything after that; I don't know what happened. Or I think I'm still in the room.
"Hello? Can anybody hear me?" I blurt out. Nothing. "Is... Is anybody there?"
"...Yes?... Yes I can hear you. Where are you?" a boy's voice eventually comes.

I pause for a moment. Nothing by pure blackness. I'm not even sure if my eyes are open. "I... I'm sorry, but... I can't see."

"This deretheni suit keeps me protected from most hazards. I might need some healing later. It's sturdy, but the armor piercing shells from yesterday had taught me otherwise. And I was not expecting such a conflict so soon when I arrived."
