When Candace had asked about what Tresh did for fun he kind of remained silent. Under his helmet his was more confused than anything. He didn't have fun, there was no time. Sometimes he might find a battle exciting but recently they all were just too brutal and dark. He trained in between battles, did that count? He organised and requisitioned munitions for the artillery tanks under his command. That was dull but he had a flare for dull fthings. This question had kept him quiet for some time now. His meditations, searching for truth those were calming rather than enjoyable and serves to a reaffirm his purpose.
After much time, after receiving news of the next lead he finally
Said
"I don't think I can have fun"

Code:
"Maybe you better not"
, Kuki commented as Fernand protested, doing so for his sake. They looked to the scarification Anik had on her forearms, but not all that closely, having seen them the night before.
Code:
"If just for the fact that you'd lose body heat if you'd expose yourself to this cold.

I was wondering about these markings, though. I'm not sure what blessing means, in this context, how do these cuts result in greater performance? How does it work?"

"What's wrong with tattoos?" Ella asked Candace, before looking over at Dalahar. She frowned and thought for a moment before responding; "Do you think it is that you can't have fun, or that you haven't had any fun?"

"Okay." Anik said, mildly disappointed. She started to put her pullover and coat back on, and answered Kuki: "I read in a book that if you did get yourself scars like this, you would get stronger. Then I did it to myself.
And after I found out that only doing this did not work, I prayed to the god related to this ritual, Faotar, and felt that I had gotten stronger.
Faotar had lend me his strength."

"When I wasn't in combat I was preparing for combat. Firing rites and combat simulations mostly. I commanded a siege company so any time not training was spent organising the company, delagating tasks and such. Any time I had left over after the war effort I spent meditating, praying to the true gods or at the ships warrior lodge for discussion and holy rites" he explained "no time for anything else"

"Right. You didn't answer my question though." - Ella replied with a frown. She was uncomfortable with the idea of soldiers ordinarily, and Dalahar seemed to tell of the worst-case scenario: people who had nothing but war. How could they possibly stay sane? Maybe they don't...

"Why would you want to stain your body like that? I don't understand." Candace replied to Ella. She listened to Tresh sombrely.

"Hmph if you wish for a specific answer then" he said "Once I could have experienced it but that was long ago. Century or so of fighting has dulled me to anything but battle. It's something that never bothered me before. I'd accepted what my role was what my goals were. I'd put what little you would call enthusiasm into the rebellion out of hope. It was a cause to fight for, something I could
Believe in and get behind" he shook his head "I never pictured myself doing anything else. No astartes dies of old age, none of us live long enough to find out if we can. But I always pictured where I'd be fighting, how I'd die. In a place I recognised" he geetured around "here everything is so uncertain, I just don't know anymore. And that's what troubles me"

"Maybe the tattoo is based on a memory they don't wish to forget. Maybe it's like a good luck charm. Or maybe they just got it because it looks cool or pretty."

"Then get a locket or painting or something." Candace said to Shara. She then looked to Tresh. "I'm sorry to hear that..."

"Save your apologies. It doesn't matter nor do you owe me any such courtesy. Constant battle was my one comfort, doing what I was made for. I carry Ralven's oath of moment, to make it worth something. That an astartes dead in the sand of some hell hole might know peace that all of his suffering, all that he'd sacrificed meant something. The imperium was forged in the blood of astartes and to see it ruled by a council of aristocrats and administrations was sickening to me. They would belittle all that we had accomplished without having seen what we had done so they could sit on their council of Terra. It is so frustrating to know it's all gone and it doesn't matter anymore because I can never go back. Everything's changed"

"But didn't the people at the portal say that it would take some amount of time to figure out where your universe is? I don't think it's indefinite."

"Shana is right. It might take some time, but you will have the option to go back from where you came." - Ella replied, before telling Candace; "Personally, I find my tattoos reassuring. They remind me my role, and that I should act appropriately. I'll probably miss 'em when I leave the force."

"Even if I could go back. I was banished from my legion. Made example of. That's why I refer to myself as a former legionnaire" he said a lot more dispassionately

"You can remove them?" Candace looked to Ella in surprise. "I would've done so already if I were you. There are other ways to show loyalty." She looked to Tresh. "I may have a job for you some day..."

"I see..." Ella replied to Dalahar. She sighed and added; "I hope you find a new cause someday. And if it returns you to violence, I hope it is damn good cause."

She then looked over at Candace. "My tattoos aren't just for show. They are my identification. So long as I'm part of XPOL, I am required by law to have them. And while they can be removed, it is a long, painful and expensive procedure."

"Violence is all I'm good for. In spite of it all I find solace in the fact that our efforts could end it all. Make the Galaxy sick with bloodshed so that it could tolerate no more. I see now I was mistaken, the rebellion, the....heresy. It was the start of a long war. Lorgar told me such, that he had seen it. The banishment was his final kindness to me. He embraced me as a father, my rage too pure for what the heresy had become he said, then he sent me here. Alone" he sighed himself. "Lorgars belief that I could find my way, that's all that I can hold onto, should hold onto." He shakes off his dull mood "he and you give me hope, belief, faith that I can. Despite always taking orders, always being told which xeno fort to crush, which ship to take, which field to die on. Now I get to decide for myself, truly. It is...a liberating thought"

"...so be it." Candace said to Ella, willing to tolerate the tats in her circumstances. Turning her attention to Tresh, she said nothing but gave a small smile.

Dalahar eyed Candace beneath his helmet. what are you thinking of? I've seen smiles like that before.
