...What? US marines? were talking Roman times, not the 18th century (I don't know when america was founded nor when the US marines were founded either) and there wasn't a claymore tripmine in 760BC to 500AD so why would we think the tripmine and not the Greatsword.

I don't care who uses what (for reference, maybe you should've just said an "official" melee weapon, or something along those lines) but I go with a glaive, and a short, blunt, dense chunk of metal or something. I'm sure that if they didn't have it, they certainly had the capacity to make it. It would resemble a thing I have here.

I'm fairly sure I'd be useless at heavy hand to hand combat, being a spindly weak feller, so I'd go with a bow, a lightweight legionaires armour, a pair of long curved daggers/dirks, probably one of those Spatha things that was mentioned, and a pilum(the standard spear of the roman infantry which was designed to snap in half when it landed so it couldn't be picked up and thrown back by the enemy). Oh and I'd like a roman legionaire's sheild, or a light version of it so I could duck when the sling stones and arrows came my way :S

Well, 90% of the wepons people are picking are all well after "Roman times"; claymores, polearms, halberds were all used well after the Roman peroid.

Your dropped in the ancient Roman times, your signed to the army of whatever army you want, you can pick your weapon/s with anything in the time era, practical or not.

I'd join whoever recruits and use a Halberd.

Halberd because its great for cutting down cavalry and infantry.

Problem with that is the Halberd wasn't in use till the 14th and 15th century well after the roman empire

An ax or hammer, because Swords require way to much finesse to kill someone. Preferably with a bow, because i'd like to stay away from sharp objects pointed at me until necessary.

My friend befriended a local metal worker, he has a 16 inch knife (blade is 16), with a leather flap sheath, and a leather handle (like a long Ka-Bar handle) and he got it for $15.00 USD and then he got it powder coated for an extra $10 USD lol. Talk about a deal

I would have to carry a light spear with a knife blade on the end and then have a short sword (tailor it up a bit to make it thinner and lighter and faster) then get a lightweight shield with a leather layer between the two parts of metal and wood and have another layer on the back to absorb impact
