In ancient Roman times, I would definately go with a spear/shield combo. The shield is more or less an essential survival tool, especially with archers about, and the spear not only allows for deadly precision strikes from behind said barrier, but also excellent reach that doesn't require oneself to be directly in the enemy's face to get a half-decent blow. Also, it really fucks up cavalry.

Your dropped in the ancient Roman times, your signed to the army of whatever army you want, you can pick your weapon/s with anything in the time era, practical or not.

I'd join whoever recruits and use a Halberd.

Halberd because its great for cutting down cavalry and infantry.

I would use my modern knowledge and their materials of the past and make the ultimate weapon of choice...
