Hey escapists, I have been thinking about finding some good webcomics to read online and came here for some suggestions! :D

If you want to know what I am currently reading right now its:

Ava's Demon
Megatokyo
Life in Aggro

These are the three that I read regularly:

Dinosaur Comics. It's a strip where all of the panels are the same in every strip, only the text is different. The writing is just so good that it works. Plus, it has talking Dinosaurs. What more could you want?

xkcd. It's a stick-person comic strip with lots of strips about science, math, and computers. Very creative and very well done.

Homestuck. Not really a comic in the strictest sense of the term, as it lacks a normal comic layout and frequently incorporates gifs, flash animations, and occasionally flash games. It is very original and features a lot of well-written characters. It is also extremely long, and takes a little while to get going, but if you manage to get into it, you'll have a very hard time stopping.

Well the three I always recommend are our very own Critical Miss [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/critical-miss] but also Awkward Zombie [http://awkwardzombie.com/] and Rare Candy Treatment [http://www.rarecandytreatment.com/]

That last one is a Pokemon only one though, so if you don't particularly like Pokemon then obviously avoid it.

Also, while it isn't a webcomic itself, it is definitely webcomic-related so I'll recommend Penny Arcade's Strip Search [http://www.penny-arcade.com/strip-search]. Basically it's a reality show that gives one webcomic artists a chance to join Penny Arcade. Also despite the fact that it's a reality show, it's actually really good, mainly due to the fact there isn't really any of the normal backstabbing and bitchyness you would see in most shows. Since it's only in it's first 'season' so to speak it isn't perfect but I'd still definitely recommend at least checking it out. Also it's made by those fantastic people that are Loading Ready Run, with Graham himself as the host.

I will definitely take a look as these! Thanks for the suggestion!

...you're welcome?

Seriously though, I'm pretty happy that other people are reading it. The writing can be hopelessly clumsy at time; but the art style is simply beautiful and the initial conflict between Ava and the Demon read like a metaphor for the struggles of some mental health problems. It was pretty touching, even if it hit a little close to home.

I love Critical Miss! I should have put that in the OP, oh well. These sound great, I'll look into them! :D

The ones I like to recommend are Misfile [http://www.misfile.com/], Least I Could Do [http://www.leasticoulddo.com/], Gunnerkrigg Court [http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/] and The Adventures of Dr. McNinja [http://drmcninja.com/]. The first is a manga-esque modern fantasy, the second is essentially an American sitcom in comic form, the third is a science-fantasy set in possibly the best fictional boarding school ever and the last is my favourite webcomic ever. It's pure awesome distilled into comic form.

I'm also going to second Awkward Zombie and Rare Candy Treatment from Andy Shandy's post above. Both are fantastic.

What else? I'd recommend Two Guys and Guy [http://www.twogag.com/] for a great gag-a-strip type comic, Manly Guys Doing Manly Things [http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/] for a very well-drawn, mostly gaming-related comic in which manly men do manly things, Scandinavia and the World [http://satwcomic.com/] for funny national-stereotypes-themed humour, Sequential Art [http://www.collectedcurios.com/sequentialart.php] for amusing oddness and the odd heartwarming moment, Fanboys Online [http://www.fanboys-online.com/] for even more gaming-based gags and finally Pokemon: Hard Mode [http://www.nuzlocke.com/pokemonhardmode.php], which is the guy who invented the Nuzlocke run of Pokemon recording his runs with added story in comic form.

...I read a lot of webcomics.

There are a couple I follow...

[a href="http://explosm.net/"]Cyanide & Happiness[/a] - (Daily) - They have some sort of random and acid humor, if that's something you like.
[a href="http://www.leasticoulddo.com/"]Least I could Do[/a] - (Daily) - Is a continuous story about a guy with high libido. It's not always about that, thank God.
[a href="http://www.smbc-comics.com/"]Cereal Morning Breakfast[/a] - (Daily) - Plays a lot with the human psyche, maths and religion beliefs.
[a href="http://www.anticscomic.com/"]Antics[/a] - (2 or 3 times a week) - Random humor just for laughs.
[a href="http://www.mrlovenstein.com/"]Mr. Lovenstein[/a] - (2 times a week) - Even more random than the last one. There's always a hidden panel on every comic btw. Hover your mouse to find it out!

Yeah, those are pretty much my favorites at the moment. There's also [a href="http://xkcd.com/"]xkcd[/a] but someone else already mentioned that one.

I have to recommend Monsterhood, as it's one of my favorite comics of all time. It's really one of the few webcomics I've seen that manages to combine the gag a day four panel newspaper style while also having really well written stretched out storylines.

I'd also recommend Sheldon because...well Sheldon. It's a fun "geek" comic I guess. There's not really much I can say to describe it, but it's just sort of a nice comic following the lives of these characters...oh, and there's a talking Duck.

Those are my two personal favorites.

I also recommend Whomp! but that's because as a fat white guy with glasses and a beard who wears Hawaiian shirts I can greatly relate to the protagonist lol

Only thing I need to warn you about Whomp...it starts kinda weird, it's not really the same humor or art style that it later becomes. So you can actually skip a lot of the early stuff if you want (it's not all bad, just feels weird)

EDIT: Oh, even though it's not currently updating, I also recommend looking into Misery Loves Sherman. It's a very cute and funny Calvin and Hobbes esque strip about a young boy, his violent sister, the two aliens who lives with him, and the miniature embodiment of the grim reaper.

Chris Eliopolous is the writer who does it (he does a lot of lettering for Marvel comics. He also did Desperate Times, the Franklin Richards series, and Cow Boy)

I actually e-mailed him recently and he said he's hoping to get back to Sherman when he finishes volume 2 of Cow Boy. So you should all check out Misery Loves Sherman, and if you like it, go ahead and buy the book. Support this awesome comic.

Some very good recommendations in this thread so far. One I really have add is Paranatural.
Probably the most consistently funny comic I've read in a looooong time. The artist is a master of comic facial expressions, there's definitely some influence from FLCL going on there.

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
Manly Guys Doing Manly Things
Questionable Content
and
Cyanide and Happiness

SMBC and C&H are page-a-day style comics. QC is a page-a-day style comic with a loose story arc following the whole thing. Wikipedia defines it as a "slice of life" comic. Manly Guys is a look at video game characters after their game has ended. The main character works at a temp agency for video game characters helping them reintegrate into everyday society.

Hmm, let's see, Gunnerkrigg Court has already been mentioned.

Digger [http://diggercomic.com/?p=3] (completed, start at the beginning) A wombat, a statue, hyenas, a mad priest and a dead god.

Skin Horse [http://skin-horse.com/] Social workers for the creations of Mad Science.

Bad Machinery & Giant Days [http://www.scarygoround.com/] Schoolkids investigate things and cope with becoming teenagers in an odd town in the North of England in Bad Machinery, while their elders come to grips with university in Giant Days.

Schock Mercenary [http://www.schlockmercenary.com/] There is no overkill, only "Open Fire" and "Reload".

If we're pimping webcomics, I'll suggest http://footloosecomic.com/
You get to see a girl beat up a dragon with a shoe in the first chapter. It's that kind of comic. It also features a sarcastic werewolf, a transvestite who wants to be a magical warrior for love and justice, nerds with giant robots and fairies who's magical powers come from them being able to break the fourth wall and ask the author to do stuff for them.

Three Panel Soul [http://threepanelsoul.com/] - A series three-panel comic strips about video games, job security, and other oddities.

Romantically Apocalyptic [http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/] - An absolutely gorgeous story-based comic about the apocalypse and how a multitude of characters and events revolve around Zee Captain.

ShiftyLook [http://www.shiftylook.com/] - A collection of comics based on several old Namco Bandai video game properties. While it's not exactly a single comic, Namco Bandai did good work finding artists and writers who could make entertaining, if not just interesting, web comics.

Erfworld [http://www.erfworld.com/] Is superb. A guy considered to be the "perfect board game tactician" is teleported into a reflection of his own board game. On like, book 5. Totally awesome.

Aaaand...

Rudolphe's Revenege [http://rodolphesrevenge.com/] Slow to update, but is an entire website of student-based humour. Comic is funny.

NUH-NUH-NUH-NUH-NECROCOMICS!

Achewood [http://www.achewood.com/], Nobody Scores [http://nobodyscores.loosenutstudio.com/] and A Lesson is Learned but the Damage is Irreversible [http://www.alessonislearned.com/] are all immense even though they don't update anymore. Highly reccomend them.

Also for live comics of quality there's:

The Order of the Stick [http://www.giantitp.com/]

Goblins [http://www.goblinscomic.com/]

Multiplex [http://www.multiplexcomic.com/]

Nedroid [http://nedroid.com/]

Guilded Age [http://guildedage.net/]

... I could go on all day.

{EDIT} Also recommend Pictures for Sad Children [http://www.picturesforsadchildren.com/].

My recommendation is Something Positive [http://www.somethingpositive.net]. The humor can be very dark, but it can also have a lot of emotional punch. It is one of the only webcomics to make me cry. It's been running for a long time and has a very well developed ensemble cast.

Oh, and Freefall [http://freefall.purrsia.com], a sci-fi comic which moves a little slowly and can be goofy, but also explores a lot of deep issues concerning artificial intelligence. I like my sci-fi hard and thoughtful and this serves that up in spades.

I'm going to suggest Guilded Age, because it never gets brought up in threads like this and it deserves some recognition. It's one of the three webcomics I check daily.
