I can't imagine any circumstance where weed could 'ruin someone's home life for years'. And for those suggesting it's a gateway drug, it's not. Statistically speaking, more people smoke a cigarette or drink a beer before they smoke pot, so in reality if you believe in 'gateway drugs' these are the drugs you should be looking at. The whole idea of a 'gateway drug' is idiotic though - the fact that weed is the cheapest, safest, and most available illegal drug is the reason that it's the first illegal drug that someone uses. The types of people who start exploring drug use are logically likely to follow the path of drugs from cheapest and most available to the more expensive and exotic. I've smoked pot for 5 years now and I've not had the urge to use any other drugs except for alcohol, tobacco, and painkillers (and the painkillers i take twice a year max - i enjoy them too much to do them on a regular basis, or else I'd get addicted).
