Building muscle actually is a good idea if you want to lose weight, or at least, if you want to lose fat. Muscle burns up calories quicker than normal flesh, so if you have more muscles, then the number of calories that you need to eat to maintain your current form per day increases, meaning it's easier to eat less calories than are necessary to maintain weight per day.

If you drink any soda... ever. Stop it. Now. Drink water, it's good for you, and it has zero calories. That said, try to reduce your sodium intake as well, salt helps to absorb water, so the more salt there is in your diet, the more water your body will maintain, which will increase bloating.

Daily exercise helps a lot as well. I'm really self conscious, so I can't go to the gym, but if you have the money to invest in some work out equipment for your home, whether its just a small set of weights, or a full out home gym, that will help a lot. This investment will help remind you that you're trying to lose weight, you'll probably be inclined to exercise more, and possibly even reminded to eat less when you get cravings (as we all do from time to time) to consume an entire tub of ice cream. And, with the daily exercise, it helps a lot if you do set up a routine, I exercise 20 minutes every morning, and 40 minutes every night about an hour or so before bed. And figure out something fun to do while you're exercising, If you want to chunk things into blocks that are divisible by 20 minutes, as I do, this can be very easy, because the average TV program, without commercials, is about 20 minutes long. I get shows that I like to watch on DVD and watch them while I exercise, jogging, doing sit ups, and weight lifting, etc... while I watch the TV.

And, of course, you won't instantly lose the weight, if you built muscle, you may actually gain weight, however, you will look thinner, which, ultimately is the goal, and if you do build the muscle, it'll be much easier to keep the weight off.

I'm still not quite sure why I've come here of all places to ask this (no offence)

I've managed to gain about 2 stone since last September because of my stupid ex force feeding me Dominos every other night for 3 months instead of me cooking for him, stupid man.

Anyways have any of you got any ideas on how to lose about 2 stone to get down to my 9 stone frame again before university? :) I'm open to anything at the moment apart from the gym cos I'm skint.
Begin leaning towards a high fiber diet, at least 1500Kcal a day still though.

Wake up an hour early and go for a run BEFORE breakfast, this way you should be forced to start burning the excess fat quicker as there is no "fresh" energy to use. Do this at most 6 days a week.

Swim, damn it swim, it's one of the few sports that have no impact damage and if you push yourself can burn up to 6-700 Kcal a hour, although, if you work that hard the longest you'll swim is a hour. Do this about 3 times a week.

I'm studying up for a NVQ in gym training, you got any questions PM me.

Look at a picture of me and say, "at least I'm not that fat!"
:p

Walking everywhere, cutting down fatty foods, the works. Eating a breakfast because it kick starts your metabolism.
Me and mum are joining a gym in the summer.

Anyway, you look lovely as you are ^^ but I doubt you'd take notice of me, lol.

I might ask my mum for Wii Fit for my birthday, anyone recommend it?
go swimming, it's real cheap, easy on the joints and a good work out as well as being fun. of course there is the problem that if you're heavier than usual, you may not be comfortable parading around in what are essentially tight fitting underwear.

I tried a Wii Fit and hated it. Not fun and not much of an exercise either.
For the same price you can buy a kettlebell.
A kettlebell + 30 mins every other day + a tiny bit of willpower = monster fitness.

That said, when it comes to losing weight, you have to control what you eat. No (practical) amount of exercise will fix things if you eat whatever whenever.

My boyfriend has already told me I look fine as I am but I'm stubborn so I don't believe him.

Anyways, thanks for all the help people :) I'll prolly talk to my dad about it at some point in the near future...

I would suggest getting a pulse/blood pressure checker if only for convience, that said I would suggest running slowly to reach the magical heart rate of 130-140BPM, this will be your golden zone where you're burning the most fat during exercising. 60% of your energy would come from stored fat..

Note: Exercise should also make you want to eat less and generally you would be happier.

The only way to do it is to take in fewer calories per day than you need. Exercise 3-5 times a week, and know how much food you're actually taking in. Quick fixes/fad diets won't work, and a gym membership is cheaper per month than a dog.
sparkpeople.com has a lot of tools for weight management. give that a try.

Well cardio exercises like running alone isnt the most effective way.. You should mix the cardio with some weight-lifting or similar streght workouts for maximum effect, and of course watch what you eat.
The Starvation diets are the very worst ones cuz w/o fat u lose other weight like muscles too :/

Having lost over 2 stone myself I've got plenty of tips!...

... But absolutely none I'd recommend to anyone else for fear of their health.

Don't eat anything within the 2 hour period before you go to bed, it just gets converted straight to fat since you're not doing anything to burn it.

Wow, you gals and guys sure are weird.
I actually had to look this up to make any sense of your post.

As for losing weight, I always find a good hiking trip to work. I lost 6 kilos (or about 12 pounds, so slightly less than a stone - what the hell, my brain hurts?!?) during my last trip without even trying.

Oh, and lastly, having three larger meals and not lots of little ones. Lots of women seem inclined to have the same amount of food but in more frequent, smaller, portions. This actually reduces the reduction in fat-tissue, because your body doesn't burn up it's 'reserves' because it believes it is getting a constant supply of meals.
Huh. I'd thought that eating more, smaller meals kept the metabolic processes running throughout the day, increasing the amount of fat burnt. Obviously I'm no expert, but wouldn't the body, if it believed it was getting a constant supply of meals, be more likely to burn the reserves, as they're no longer necessary? I thought the body tends to jealously hoard any excess calories when it believes there are lean times ahead.
