Audrina let out a soft groan of frustration as she heard voices waking her from an exhausted sleep. If only she had a little longer to rest her eyes. She rubbed her eyes, for a moment forgetting her situation. A pain of fear and anxiety shot up through her spine as her surroundings came into focus, she remembered. She saw the monk, Another trick no doubt... "Hey Greg was it? I wouldn't talk to our friend over here, something's not right about him," she said, sleep still evident in her voice, a small yawn escaping her lips. She stood up, stretching her back out from sleeping on the hard ground, her eyes never leaving the monk-like figure. "What have they sent you for?" she asked, walking up next to Greg, her eyes flittering down to where he kept the silver blade for a fraction of a second before returning her cold stare to the man.

"Sent implies I'm following orders from someone"

The man spoke

"I came here to meet this years contenders"

Finch awoke to the sounds of an unfamiliar voice. His mood was low and his patience for new shit was even lower.

"Listen." he said, standing up from the ground and dusting himself off. "How about fuck you, mm? I'm sick and tired of all these bullshit mindgames. It seems like everywhere we damn go, theres more shit that we don't know about causing all kinds of shit. Shit, basically, is fucked up, and I will be dammned if I'm gonna carry on this dog and pony show unless we get some goddamn answers. I don't give a fuck who or what you are, or why you're here, or any of that shit. We ain't doing shit until we get some answers."

He wearily sat down and lit up a cigarette, the morning breeze blowing the smoke into little streams of grey smoke behind him.

"I supose I could mention how this situation as a whole is completely fucked up, but I guess that goes without saying now huh?" he said, turning to Audrina.

Audrina stayed quiet for a moment, watching to see what the monk would do at Finch's outbreak. He's going to get us all killed with that anger problem of his. We've been lucky so far but how much more of him are they going to take before they snap. What if he wants them to snap? He might not want to leave, none of them might. "Fucked up is the understatement of the century," she said more to herself then anyone in particular. She quickly shook her head trying to get the thoughts from her brain as if she were afraid the others could see what she was thinking. "How many get out every year?" she asked the monk. The fact they did this yearly made her sick to her stomach but it kept her mind from thinking that she was the only one trying to escape.

He looked at Finch

"So what do you want to know?"

And then he turned to Audrina

"One human always makes it"

The man's face never changed, nor did his tone. He spoke as simply as if he were reading a newspaper out loud

Finch looked dead ahead at the monk, his eyes gleaming with furious anger.

"What the hell were those Snatcher dudes? I don't want no bullshit answer either. I want to know what they are, why they're here, what they have in for us and how we kill them." he said, his cool attitude returning.

"Secondly, I wanna know who brought us here. I know it wasn't that Butler dude, cos he's dead now. So who the Hell is keeping us here?"

He straightened up now, his voice calm and collected.

"Finally, any chance of a cheeseburger? I ain't eaten in days!" he said, his growling stomach a testament to his word.

"Think of the Snatchers as wolves and yourselves as sheep. That would be the simplest analogy your human minds can comprehend. They are your reason to keep going forward, to find the tallest tower and make your wish. They are designed to push you humans to the very tip of your potential"

The monk smiled

"This is a contest for us Higher Powers to enjoy. You are picked at random, it could have happened to anyone. We have been doing this since the dawn of your time. As for your request for food..."

A plate of cheeseburgers and a bucket filled with ice and beers suddenly appeared

"And if we refuse to play your game? If we all just stop playing what then?" Audrina said sickened that there was no rhyme or reason for being here. She was nothing more then a player in a game because higher beings were bored. Her hands were in a fist at her side as she fought to keep herself under control.

Val got up with Finch's yelling, and noticed the monk. She got up and hobbled over.
Only one huh?. Val thought a bit about what she knew.
Suddenly it hit her.

She had a plan. And it was a good one. Although, she felt uneasy with the monk there. She felt just as uneasy sharing her idea with the rest of the group. But she doubted she would be the one to get out, she was already injured.

"Um, what do we do next?" she asked, picking up a cheese burger.

"Let me remind you that reward for winning is any wish you want granted"

The monk stated

"But if you all stop playing, the Snatchers will capture you. And you will die"

He turned to Val

"I will leave and you will continue. I simply didn't want half the group to be chasing after illusions, some of us have quiet large bets on Mister Gregory and we couldn't have him chasing after illusions"

The golden fires started to recede as the monk turned to walk away but then stopped abrublty and turned around

"You should also note that there is a traitor in your group and that they've always been the one to win"

And with that, he vanished into mist

Audrina felt her stomach drop at the mention of a traitor. She was truly alone now no matter what other people wanted her to believe. "Well were going to be off soon then I take it." Audrina said trying to lighten the tension she knew was coming. An idea popped in her head to protect herself, she knew that it probably wouldn't hurt any monsters out there but it would hurt one of them should the time come. Breaking away from the group for a moment, she took a bottle of beer from the bucket of ice and emptied it. She stuck it in her bag. She could always break it and use the shards as a weapon.

Gregory listened intentivly to what the monk had to say. He wanted to ask a few things but he couldn't get a word in between Finch and the monk. He wouldn't admit it but he was quite flattered that some of them wanted him to win, someone with power.

He smiles again.

"Well, there goes my chance for a cup of tea" he says to no-one in particular. "Hmmm, beer? That's not a good idea, something non-alcoholic would be better". He picks up a cheeseburger and takes an enormous bite.
"Ohh mmgh mfg hmng " he says from a mouth full of meat and burger bun.
He picks up another one and then goes to sit down, he turns around and takes a beer as well.
"Why the hell not" he says "I've been drinking whiskey neat so this won't be much trouble".
He worries though, nothing hydrating. A traitor among them. Audrina, no, Val, has to be her. He'd be keeping an eye on her from now on.

A traitor?

Val mused for a second. From the conversations she picked up, they had all come at the same time and woke up in the same place, except for her.

Crap.

Maybe she was looking too far into it. Maybe people weren't taking what he said seriously.
He's lying, he wants us to be torn apart from the inside.

She wondered why bets were on Greg? Was he the traitor? Would they even know who the traitor was? Did they make the traitor? Was the traitor really human or one of them?

And about her plan, should she share it, or keep it to herself and try to do it on her own? No, she was such a disadvantage with her injuries. She stared into the distance, lost in thought. After a bit she came up with a course of action. She decided to get to know these people a little more.

"Hey Greg," Val hobbled over to sit next to him. "Since it seems we're in it for the long haul I've decided we should get to know each other a little better. So, what were you doing before you ended up... here?"

I'm voting A

Finch was taken aback by the newest revelation to the group. Bullshit he thought. You can't fake how scared we all were back there. I don't think anyone here is that good of an actor.

However, to his amazement, he saw everyone react differently. There was an air of suspicion, an uneasy tension that filled the whole campsite. He noticed Greg smiling coyly as he drank a beer; he noticed how Audrina drank a beer in less than four gulps and put another one in her bag, trying to go unnoticed; he noticed how Val was shifting her eyes side to side nervously whilst talking to Greg.

He went over to the cooler packed with ice and grabbed a beer. Casually snapping the top off, he took a cheeseburger in the other hand and sipped on the drink. It was exsquitely cooling, a much needed relief after everything they had been through.

He went over and sat on the floor next to Audrina, fininshing his cheeseburger in two bites as he did.

"Listen Audrey." he said, speaking in a hushed whisper. "I want you to know. I don't know you. Before today, I never even knew you existed. But I want you to know..." he said, staring directly into her eyes.

"I trust you. I trust you, I trust Greg, and I trust Val. I don't know why, and I certaintly don't have a reason for it, but I do."

He stared out into the twisted skyline, sipping his beer and enjoying this, however brief, moment of tranquility.

You're not beating me... he thought, aiming it at whoever the was controlling this "game". You are not going to break me. I garuntee it.

Greg shall stick around for a bit.

Greg began to relax a bit, enjoying his beer and cheeseburger. "Mmmm, these are really good" he said to himself.
He looked up at Val as she was coming over. "Hello Val" she sat down. "What I did before I ended up here? But, I've always been here" he says in a distant voice... He watchs her reaction.
"Pah! No, I havn't. I was, am, something of a writer back in London, articles, short stories, small scale stuff. Did a little bit of extra work, working backstage in the theater. I enjoy it." He smiles, seems to get lost in thought about back home. He starts and returns to the conversation "I decided to come to America for a while, six weeks, see the real America you know. Plus, I got a little job for a local magazine, I'd write an article each week, chronicling my adventures." He grins again.
"Anyway, how about you? What's your story?"

"Well," Val said looking at her cheeseburger, not eating it."I was working on my senior thesis for college, Art History. I was going to connect to go to a flight to South Asia, and travel along the Silk Road and Indian Ocean Trade Network. My thesis was going to be on how these routes affected and influenced the art of the surround people and religions. And then I ended up in a closet back at that house. I'm not really sure how." he paused for a minute, staring at her food.

"Do you trust me?"

Audrina sat there picking at the grass while the others seemed to be enjoying themselves. They were eating and socializing as if they didn't believe the monk, but how couldn't they? What would he gain by lying? All four of them had reasons for suspicion; anyone of them could be the traitor. She wanted to tell Finch she trusted them all, but she couldn't get her lips to form the words. She wanted them to understand everything she did was for the group's best interest but the words sounded wrong in her head. Just sitting there was making her skin crawl; she wanted to be doing something proactive not having some sort of a picnic. But she said put, her sore body thanking her. She was ripping a blade of grass into tiny slivers when she finally spoke up. "I'm going to wish I forget everything about this place, every last sadistic detail. I mean, if I make it to the end of course. Seems kind of a waste doesn't it. Anything in the world and I wish to forget," she said her laughing softly at how silly it sounded now that she said it aloud. She threw the pieces into the small breeze and watched as they were carried to the city.
