A little but now I am too... and it's not a bad effect actually... makes me feel more positive about the game weirdly... THE MAGICAL POWERS OF BUCKAROO BANZAI!

Considering it's Nomura, even if they don't look all that "fantastic," my bet is they'll actually be well done characters in terms of who these characters are, not just how they look. And frankly, I'll take the dullest looking character with the best development over, say, Quina Quen from IX. Might be a fantastical looking character, but is probably the dullest character I've seen in any game I've ever played.

This may be the beginning of the end... for me and gaming anyway...

I've loved Final Fantasy since I first glimpsed my friends older brother playing FF6 back in the SNES days and I purchased both a Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 purely so I could play Final Fantasy. I even picked up a PS3 when it seemed like FF13 was FINALLY getting close to coming out, and hey it eventually did... but for both PS3 and the 360, not that a non-exclusive mattered. What mattered was that well... I just didn't like it much, it lacked a particular something that all non-mmo had that made me love them (yes even 12). So after putting out the first non-mmo Final Fantasy I haven't beaten it seems Square has finally killed my excitement in the franchise that made me interested in videogames in the first place.

I'm talking of course about Final Fantasy 15, no it's not the semi-modern world I can take that... it's not the more action based combat system... I can take that as well... it's not even the character designs themselves...

I mean seriously square, no playable Female Characters announced? And why is the cast of FF15 looking like a douchtastic boyband coupled with a bunch of old dudes with oddly trendy j-pop hairstyles? It's not even the hairstyles, it's not the look of the characters... it's the fact that you seem to be "broing" up the series in the worst possible way...

I mean seriously... look at these guys... they look like a bunch of douchebags going out to the club...

Perhaps I'm just being negative on the character designs but to me it feels like this is just... too big of a change for the series in a direction I have no interest in following. I mean I still WANT to play JRPG's and I still WANT to play Final Fantasy, but it seems that you don't want to give me Final Fantasy... you want to give me J-pop douchebros on parade...

*sigh* Ah well, with the way gaming is going these days I'm sure more and more of my favorite franchises will get unbearable and with the whole medium in general straying away from Narrative Driven Games I'm sure the day isn't far away when I'll likely give up videogames as my primary hobby...

So Escapist, how do the rest of you feel about Final Fantasy 15?
Im not saying I like the character models either, but FF characters have always looked hyper-modern-trendy in japanese style for the time, and the unrealistic hairstyles have been around even longer. Im not an expert on fashion and niether are you but most of us will be willing to accept characters who are dressed flamboyantly if the actual character development is done well enough.

Look how many of us forgives Cloud Strife's hair, or even Tidus' Clothes.

I find it just a bit funny that the OP even warned in his title that he/she is going on a rant thread and people are coming on here complaining and yelling at OP for basically ranting. Like, what did you expect?

On that note, please tell me those two characters in the picture you posted weren't mullets?
Please, for the love of god OP tell me those two characters aren't wearing fucking mullets.
Even I will admit- these designs do like bland compared to other characters in final fantasy games.

Whoa whoa whoa, FF15 is going to ditch the turn-based combat and are making it a cross between Kingdom Hearts and Devil May Cry? That actually sounds like something I might like, one of my two major gripes with Final Fantasy was the turn-based combat (the other being the mostly cliched plots).

But actually on-topic, I do agree they look like douchebags, they're somewhat better then the really... weird character designs of the previous games. I sort of see why you would be pissed though.

Don't personally care. That combat system looks fun as HELL. WHich is something I have not said about too many FF(or even Square-Enix) games over the past couple years.

They could have me playing as a sailor scout and I'd be like "BY THE POWER OF THE MOON!"

Holy shit. I thought it would be a weak reason, but let's not mince words, that takes the piss. Because one Final Fantasy game with an all-male lineup spells the end of the series forever OMFG!!!. Let's not forget the existence of Final Fantasy X-2, now. So, maybe the player characters do look a bit like a J-Pop boy band, but I'm sure they're all badasses in their own right. It has that feel about it.

How do I feel? Unsure of what to expect, disillusioned at the most recent take on the battle system and level design most of all. I don't know if FFXV will have what it takes to reinvigorate the formula. Action RPG? Sure, sounds fun, but they could just y'know, go back to the FFX style turn-based system with XIII-style dynamic battles. That's what I wanted and expected from 13, but instead got a craptastic button mashing system which made me fall asleep several times during the game. Can FFXV adapt an action-RPG formula that stays true to the series and is immense fun at the same time? I don't know, we'll see.

Maybe it's just me but the characters in the OP just look like retreads of FFVII characters. Their outfits to me seem just like the outfits of cloud and the guys who follow you around for the entire game.

Noctis = cloud with blue/black hair
Guy on the right = Reno (the red haired guy from VII)
guy on the left = Tseng (the black haired guy from VII)
guy on the far left = Elena (the chick in that group)

If hating the "dudebro" look is what kills the series for you, then by that logic you should have stopped at VIII. Zell, Seifer, Squall, and Irvine all look just like those guys.

Based around what I've seen and read, it looks interesting, but I'll have reservations about it until I actually get the chance to judge it (i.e. play it). On the one hand, the game looks beautiful, the gameplay looks like it will have potential if they manage to have at least some sense of freedom, and the general concept sounds intriguing. On the other hand, if they try to make it too dark, too "emotional", and too action focused, they run the risk of completely loosing all sense of soul in the game. It isn't that I don't like it when games decide to be a little darker, but what generally comes with darker themes in games causes me to lose interest in them very fast. Hopefully, Final Fantasy XV manages to still have its own charm.

Those have to be the most normal looking FF characters I've ever seen, even Squall had that absurd gunblade.

In fact if it weren't for the slight animesque facial design I would have thought it a western game.

I like the character designs, personally. Even the picture you despise looks appealing to me. Kind of like reservoir dogs if the characters were cosplayers.

other than that, I hold with the group. we know next to nothing about the things you're presently complaining about, and what we do know of the mechanics points to them being a 200% improvement over 13. let's give it the benefit of the doubt.

...So X-2 didn't do it, nor the MMO of XI, nor the retarded single player MMO of XII, nor the probably awful XIII and its sequels. So what you're saying killed the game franchise is an idea that you conjured up yourself without any affirmation from actual sources? From what I remember, Nomura did talk about having Stella and another female character as party members in the game. In any case, I'm not sure why not having a female party member would make-or-break a decision to buy the game... Maybe judgment is being passed too early.

Insert paragraph about unjustified claims of MACHOness and BROWNess even though the trailers kind of show that being not very true at all.

For me, I trust the Kingdom Hearts team well enough to not fuck up. I mean they did create the insanely awesome Kingdom Hearts franchise. Now that I think about it, there aren't that many female party members in that series either?

Then again, maybe I shouldn't sound too much like a fanboy so let's criticize for a bit. Something that would make-or-break my decision to buy a game is if the gameplay doesn't look particularly good. Though I do like the teleport spamming, which I'm waiting for a very good explanation as to how that works, the camera in the gameplay trailer seems to be quite awful. Notice that split second of instant zooming when the camera hits a wall or something. Then again, then again I heard that the team actually acknowledges that problem and are working to fix it. What also concerns me though is the talk about direct sequels for XV, and considering that Square Enix doesn't have the best track record of direct sequels and the game hasn't even been released? So yeah, there's that.

In the end though, there are still other Final Fantasies. There's that remake of Final Fantasy X, the latest installment of XIII, and that MMO XIV. I mean I personally don't care about most of them, but I just wanted to note that other choices do exist. But whatever.

If anything, the OP just piqued my interest because of the character designs. Nothing about that screen screams "Final Fantasy" as the last 10 years have. Still looks very Japanese, but not to its own detriment.

Here's a panorama of characters from the most recent trailer (that picture you're using is quite old)

As you can see, there are two girls, and when viewing the characters from the front they don't look so "brotastic" to me.
Is that Ezio in the middle?

It would be disappointing if they downplayed female characters, but I'm not going to judge the characters they've got until I know something about them. Also, they don't dress like Tidus, which is definitely a plus.

I dunno dude. All of the characters in FF games have been kinda androgynous for a while. I think that Square needs to do a better job with storytelling this time. Emo characters are fine. Emo storytelling is not.
