I wasn't let down by Mass Effect, but each to his own. It was far from perfect and the parts i didn't like so much were the shooting (not too bad, but a bit bland), driving the Mako, side mission to main mission ratio and very repetitive level design for side missions. But overall, i still really liked the game. I enjoyed the extensive dialogue, story and RPG elements.
Games that i was sligthly let down by are: Gears of War, TF2, FEAR, COD4+5, Fallout 3 (to a certain extent, it was still quite enjoyable), Painkiller, Crysis etc. But those were just my experiences, not trying to put down any fans or anything.

Painkiller. It's wierd. I love Serious Sam but Painkiller was...meh. I think it's because the Maps feel so disconnected from each other. It feels like playing through a mission pack.

FEAR. Competent shooter, occasionally creepy, but the two parts of the game don't really mesh well. It feels like two different games were merged for no real reason.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. The Combat was good but they threw in crappy boss battles so they could show it off. Platforming was fine. The Atmosphere, plot and characters were dark yet incredibly bland. They couldn't even take advantage of the whole "Sands of Time" to put in some interesting time travel concepts(The sand wraith part was just sloppy).
I've never been that impressed by Painkiller, even though i love Serious Sam First & Second Encounter. It left no room for suspense or suprise seeming as it would always tell you when you were about to encounter a room full of enemies, and the levels felt too similar. The guns seened unique at first, but with constant use i found them slightly aggravating. SS is just a game i've enjoyed much more than Painkiller
Overall FEAR is just personally a game i found the most disspointing. The repetition was something that just got to me. All the levels looked practically the same and after you've been in one gunfight, every after feels too similar. I don't think the horror elements were done very well either, i found it one of the most unterrifying experience ever.

Nobunaga's Ambition 2.

It was hard to get into for a bit and then I realize I have better TBS out here.

I couldn't get into Mass Effect, I didn't like the combat.
I'm in that exact situation now. Having recently completed Fallout 3 with VATS which worked quite well, the ME combat system feels broken. Not to mention the AWFUL teammate AI; they hardly even attempt cover and are always running out into the line of fire to get themselves shot, no matter how well you order them around. They also both got stuck behind a single box in a very early mission (where you have to go get Fist in Chora's Den), forcing me to clear the rooms myself. Hopeless.

hmm... let's see...
SSBB
Kingdom of Hearts
Any final fantasy
Any resident evil
GTAIV
and every game on the orange box excluding portal
Then what sort of game do you like? You've eliminated (in order) crappy fighting games, JRPGs, Survival-Horror, TPS-sandbox (though GTAIV did suck), and FPS. I'm assuming you're one of those "Peggle" types of gamers.

As for me, it'd have to be Mirror's Edge, due to the high expectations I had prior to playing...only to find out that collision-detection was missing.

Fallout 3, because nothing HAPPENS. They could have made some awesome locations and such randomly scattered through the Wasteland a la Oblivion's temples and forts, but instead I explore for two hours and find a grocery store. With a single, solitary can of beans in it.

Also Kingdom Hearts. And don't even get me started on Lost Odyssey; I really wish they had just hired the cutscene animators and the writers to make a CGI fantasy-action movie. It could have been fantastic. This is the way I usually feel about JRPGs, excluding FF I, II, III, and IV.

For me it was GTA4.
It just felt wrong, and was kind of annoying.
Same here, but luckily I only played it at a friend's and didn't buy it.
It was sort of fun for a few hours, but I haven't once had the urge to play it again.

I can only answer the question with a caveat. Yes, I have become bored with games and dropped them halfway through, but I've never regretted playing them that far. If I played beyond the first five minutes (which describes almost everything but Summoner), something was keeping me in. Why should that make all the time I spent retroactively suck?

That said, Final Fantasy Tactics. I found the story to be interesting, but the gameplay eventually left me cold.

WoW, that game just....... I don't see how it's supposed to be addictive.
Neither do I, really, and I like the game.

Panzer Dragoon Orta didn't sit well with me. Call of Duty 4 didn't either, though in its case I had played the game quite a bit, trying to convince myself that I was having fun, but in the end I wasn't. Such a shame. I had high hopes for it.

well I find it strange how people find watching storyline's boring and time consuming yet will create and entire thread talking about it...

Mass Effect because I couldn't care less about the story line
What I'm about to say might get me lynched but I couldn't agree more. Stiff characters, boring dialogues and bland plot. It lacked, I dunno, spark. Finesse. The glitter on the edges. The little things make all the difference. All the stuff the writers would make if they didn't throw in a bisexual alien and go home instead. If ME was a movie it'd be 5 episodes of star trek. If it was a book it'd be doomed to end up in a recycling bin and miraculously transform into a roll of toilet paper.

Soft and scented but toilet paper nonetheless.

Liked the visuals, though. Shiny...
Yeah I agree with you there, plus it was boring to listen to (the story I mean)
Thirded for emphasis.

Oblivion is the other game that made me want to drill my own eyes out.

I think we can safely say that the MAJORITY of people here were let down by Mass Effect, which begs the question, will Mass Effect 2 be any better?
That is quite wrong, it is a thread specifically about games that people weren't into.

If you look at any 'favorite games' thread Mass Effect always features very highly in those too.

It is definately not a game for everyone as the amount of time invested by the player in exposition and story is almost half of the game, but it is what a lot of people love about the game.

I personally loved it despite its technical flaws and the weak combat system, and the last hour of the game was the most exciting climax to a game I have ever played.

Maybe I should of said "the MAJORITY of people posting in this thread", as it is statistically true.
I do see your point however:)
