OT: Nothing, but then I don't lack hope for the human race in the first place because I'm not a melodramatic pussy.

Actually there is evidence to support God but some people choose to deny the evidence and some people choose to accept it. Some people choose to accept the complexity of life (cells, DNA etc....) as evidence of an intelligent designer that some people call God.
This is exactly what I was talking about, you first say "God exists" then you look for ways to attempt to prove it, such as using cells and DNA to attempt to support the claim. The Bible ("the word of God") makes no mention of DNA, so you took a purely scientific discovery and applied it as it suited you to support the theory you already pre-conceived. This is not evidence of God, just evidence of the complexity of life and the two cannot be automatically combined. Evidence of God would have to be something far more certain and absolute, such as God appearing and proving his existence, or Heaven/Hell being found. Its not denying the evidence, its taking the evidence at its value and not applying extra value to it to suit a pre-conceived thought, which is quite underhanded.

The creation of the universe will eventually lead to the creation of life and science has shown that if some of the factors were even just the slight bit off, the universe we know today would not exist. That means that the big bang was just a coincidence and since life exists and the big bang is the creation of the universe which life inhabits it also means that the eventual creation of life is just a coincidence.
It appears you are making the assumption that only Earth has life, when it is VERY likely different forms of life exist all throughout the universe. "Life" is not a specific outcome to a specific set of circumstances, but something that is very likely vastly more common than we currently know, and that knowledge is very limited beyond our own galaxy. Life is not a coincidence, its normal.

I find faith to be filling in the gaps that there is no evidence, if there was absolutely no evidence to believe in something I wouldn't believe it, religious ideas also change when new evidence comes around, intelligent design only came in when new evidence was found. Despite some fundamentalists refusing to adapt their ideas and belief, some people can and as a result beliefs change.
"Filling in the gaps" with Faith is a pretty ridiculous way of reasoning. I personally find it easier to just admit "these are things that are currently unknown", as the world and universe is filled with things we do not CURRENTLY understand. Lack of understanding does not mean "God did it". Also, "Intelligent Design" is NOT a new religious idea, its been around for 2000 years. Back then it was called "Genesis" and is the first Chapter of your Bible. They just expanded on it a little, threw in some false data and changed the name.

However in your example the sky being blue is currently an absolute, The Big Bang Theory, is just a theory it is not an absolute and without creating your own universe or going back to the beginning you have no way to prove it an abosolute. Therefore it still incorporates a faith, because people choose to believe that is the way it works.

Your arguement is based off the generalization that people who believe cannot change their views or beliefs when something is proven. Science and religion do not have to be seperate in the sense that someone cannot believe in science and still believe in God. I do both and so do a lot of people, all I ask is that some people stop being so condescending about it.
The sky being blue is not an absolute at all, it could be changed as the color is derived from the sun's energy passing through the atmosphere, its also affected by how the Human eye works. If an Alien came to our planet, it is entirely possible they would not see our sky as blue. I agree the BBT is a theory, a theory is an idea of explanation based on currently available data. It does not incorporate a Faith (using the definition Faith as it pertains to God), as God is not at all involved in the theory of the Big Bang, they also don't "choose to believe that is the way it works", you are applying spiritual thought processes to scientific theory, they THINK thats the way it MIGHT have WORKED. That is not the same as faith in any of its definitions.

Again, you are free to believe in God all you like, but attempting to convince me that its a rational way of thinking is futile. I don't mean to be condescending, but its difficult not to appear so when I find the entire concept of God as laughable.

Actually if there is anything that is the thing that I despise about people it's religion. It is just some rules you follow blindly your whole life instead of enjoying your freedom the way you should (do whatever you want as long as it is not illegal in your country *wink*).If you pray to God he can answer yes,no or wait that is ok but you don't know what he answers so if you pray to McDonalds you can assume they answer pretty much the same and you still don't know what they would answer. Also assuming you would say religion helps people...then you are an idiot because hope can't feed poor sick little old Timmy that has also been hit by a truck and is starving under a bridge,no money does that.Today it's not hope that makes your world go round it's money something i doubt any religion can give away in large quantities. The whole concept just seems medieval to those trained to think properly (anyone who has heard of the concept of thinking) it's blindly following a leader like a monarch that doesn't probably exist. All I can associate religion with is mindless violence, slaughter of the innocent,Crusades to take over a freakin' desert (reffering to all the lost lives in the crusades against Islam to take over Jerusalem where thousands of warriors were led to their demise),extremist terrorism, and recently child abuse and rape. The whole concept is like a fantasy book with plotholes the size of craters.I can not believe so many people still believe in religion.I am not talking about any specific religion so I don't want to start a whole flame war with this and if you want i can think of examples of violence and crimes against humanity from every religion in the world.

Steel Ronin, now I don't intend for this to become a flame war and I know you don't want it to be one either, but when I hear people hate on religious people because they "blindly follow a leader that probably doesn't exist." it makes me rage. Religion to me is something that you choose. It's a way of life, and it helps certain people get through their day. Also people saying religion is blind faith; Fuck... blind faith or not, it's still gonna help me get through my day knowing that even though something is unlikely, there is still a chance that everything will work out. That "leader that probably doesn't exist" doesn't exist... physically. God is a symbol of everything that is good in this world. He is the spirit of Christianity. LISTEN its NOT the ghostly kind of spirit. An example of what I'm trying to explain would be Santa Clause. Yes we all know he doesn't exist, but we call him the spirit of Christmas for a reason. We humans gave the spirit of Christmas a physical identity; he has a big white beard, big and jolly, wears a long red hat with a white fluff on top, His coat is of similar design, and he wears big black boots. With this identity, whenever people see a picture of Santa Clause they instantly think of Christmas. The only difference between Santa Clause and God is that God doesn't have an exact identity. Usually people believe he is an older looking version of Jesus, others believe he is bald, and some people believe he is black. But you know, that's the beauty of it all. We aren't suppose to know his identity. He is anonymous. Also I would like to point out that if God did exist physically, people would go fucking crazy, and all other religions would probably be wiped out because they would be pointless compared to a religion that is completely true in everyone's eyes. It wouldn't be a belief anymore, it would be fact. You wouldn't have the freedom to believe in anything else because what can beat the truth. God has to be anonymous, so that people have the freedom to believe what they want.

Oh and the little part at the end. If we didn't have evil/sin, we wouldn't have the ability to make choices. All choices have both positive and negative effects. The violence you constantly hear about is the price we pay for the freedoms that we have been given. In exchange for having complete freedom, and the ability to think for ourselves; violence will always exist.

this is just my 2 cents on the matter. I hope I didn't come off as a douche bag to you. I'm not a very religious person, but I still believe in God. I'm fine with people who don't believe in God, but I do care when people don't understand why others believe. It's simple, all you need to do is believe. It's your choice if you want to believe or not. Nobody will hold your decision against you, at least the ones who have a brain and understand others. I'm happy with whatever you choose. Whatever gets you through the day :) and I apologize if I came off rude.

Nothing. I don't place my hope in humanity; for if there is any one constant in this world, it is that human beings are incapable of controlling their greed, fear, and stupidity. Even in the face of long-term annihilation.
There are people who complain about problems, and there are those who try to do something about it. I can only really respect those few that fit into the latter category.

Honestly? Nothing. It's not that I don't respect people's opinions and beliefs (religious or otherwise) but I have not seen more than two or three real life persons actually being (and not pretending to be) good hearted individuals. All I see is behaviour focused on self-gain or hypocrisy, which is worse. It's all well and good typing sugary goodness but think, when was the last time you saw someone altruistic in life? More importantly, how did he end up?

If a tree falls on a woman and nobody is there to hear it, why is there a tree in the kitchen?

(On a side note I pass holocaust jokes off to my Jewish girlfriend because that's just the kind of person I am.)

As for me, one of the things that undoubtedly gives me hope for humanity is, believe it or not, my girlfriend. Although it makes me worry about her sometimes, she's incredibly selfless. She helped a friend of mine out even though that friend damn near hated her. Now, the two are good friends. She hasn't exactly done a ton to help humanity, but every little step counts, you know?

Hmm well science can also do that, people make an observation, assume something about the observation then find ways to prove that observation. People observed that life is complicated and do not think that it came about from coincidence, they assumed that an intelligent designer did that and tried to find evidence for it. Just like someone can observe an apple falling off a tree, assume that a force causes it to drop, looks for evidence to support that assumption. And I give you how we came about gravity. The only problem I can find for the evidence is the fact that it is up for interpretation, the more complex the thing we are trying to prove the harder it is to prove. For God to exist and create everything then he must be incredibly complex himself thus being beyond our current level of understanding, so its going to be hard to prove he exists.

It appears you are making the assumption that only Earth has life, when it is VERY likely different forms of life exist all throughout the universe. Lack of understanding doesn't necessarily mean God didn't do it, what you are saying can work both ways, like admitting these things are currently unknown, how an entity far beyond our understanding can exist is currently unknown. Speaking of genesis, timeline wise is actually quite accurate considering it was written thousands of years ago: http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/day-age.html

What do you mean false data?

The sky being blue is not an absolute at all, it could be changed as the color is derived from the sun's energy passing through the atmosphere, its also affected by how the Human eye works. If an Alien came to our planet, it is entirely possible they would not see our sky as blue. I agree the BBT is a theory, a theory is an idea of explanation based on currently available data. You said the sky is blue therefore currently it is an absolute (by absolute I do not mean it cannot change, I mean it IS, I blame my own wording for this). What I am trying to say is that in your example that is what it IS, when explaining the beginning of the universe and life, it is what COULD be. Therefore the same logic isn't necessarily going to work because of the circumstance, also people believe different theories, the fact is, it is currently a belief and as you said before believing incorporates faith, therefore it incorporates faith (what do you mean by faith as it pertains to God). Belief is also "what they think is the way that it might/did/will work.

The same way I find the belief that randomly out of nothing a bang happened that over time created everything we know today is laughable. However (I didn't mean you specifically when I quoted you, I was using you as an example) I don't go around trying or wanting to flame anyone that even brings up the topic of religion.

This is long to type about so after your next reply can we just agree to disagree?

Christ. Because no matter what happens - no matter how many people rebel, hate, kill, rape - any other horrible things.... in the end we all will be together before God, side by side loving one another.

If you want to hate me because of my beliefs that is fine. Want to call me a fool for my beliefs that is fine as well.

But no matter who you are - or what you say - in the end we will be together as one. For that - I love you all my brothers and sisters in God. I look forward to that day. Till then all the little things gives me hope. Someone holding an elevator for someone - someone letting a car merge into their lane - the little things.

I actually have quite a lot of hope in humanity. I mean, I am one. Might as well root for the home team.

Sure, we have our flaws, but then again, so does everything else in the world, and there's always room for us to get better, and redeem ourselves for our sins. Or at least I think so.

Sometimes, I'll just look at my computer screen and go "Wow, most of us were living in dirty peasant houses only a few generations ago, and now we've managed to create actual computers that can render almost totally lifelike scenes and link anyone on earth with anyone else? Fuck me!"
Agreed.

Also, food, comedy, and music re-enforce my hope every day.
