What are some moments in games that really hit you?

Hello, I am Azernak0.

I have been thinking about a few moments in games that I have played that really "hit me" and made me realize the power of a potential situation. Modern Warfare has one that is pretty powerful and most everyone knows about it. Modern Warfare 2 actually has something that I find more compelling, as it is so believable.

In MW2, there is a little cut scene before you attack an anti-aircraft weapon. The commander tells his troops that they need to take out the gun so that the helicopters can evacuate the civilians. Every soldier then goes forth and completes the mission. I know I am going to sound like a weird sap, but this is a very powerful moment to me. It made me realize that there are people in the world who would be willing to die to save the lives of people that are not a member of their group and are people that they do not know. It's not powerful because "the cartoon men died!" It is powerful because it speaks about the strength of people in that kind of situation. It made me think "How many soldiers have given up their lives to protect civilians? How many people have died to make the situation for others better?"

So, do you folks have any particular moments where gaming transcended just being a 'game' and become something more personal to you?

Cheers

Wii Tennis... ouch.

Also, the scene where Squall and Rinoa are in the Ragnarok as it heads back to Earth was touching, kinda.

And while playing WoW, there were some half rotten whale corpses on the beach that I was just running under and I realised that this was some serious gore.

I found the end of Mega Man Battle Network 3 strangely moving.
Shut up, I did.

Jak 3 spoilers ahead...

The scene where Damas dies and askes Jak to find his son without realising that Jak was his son really reminded me of my grandfather who died exactly a month before I was born and we never got to meet eachother. He was known as a really fun guy to be around and was very ceerful and outgoing, shame I never got to meet him myself, at least I was named after him which was good.

Well, the end of Half-life 2: Episode 2 is an obvious one, so I'll go with that for now. I'm sure I'll be ninjaing a few people on this as well, but it is, without a doubt one of the most powerful moments in gaming I've ever experienced.

Oh, and also the conclusion of the Overlord DLC in ME2. I knew something was amiss, but I wasn't ready for how fucked up that project really was. There was no way I could keep that project going.

Yesterday in my game of Rome Total War. I had started my games as the Roman Scipii family and was well on my way following the senate's orders capturing a Carthaginian town and blockading some of their ports. The rewards I got for this were very petty and useless and when the Senate deemed my family the only family that was "too inferior" to get any seats in the senate, I just decided that the senate could go fuck themselves.

Instead of sending an army to take Carthage, I sent a diplomat to discuss a alliance between the both of us. Carthage was very eager to accept this agreement as they were currently being harassed by Spain and the Julii family. Because my family was now allied with the Carthaginians, the other Roman families and senate were forced to sign a ceasefire with Carthage, thus crushing their dreams of conquering Sardinia, the Balearic Islands and the city of Carthage itself. Of course, the Senate and even the people of Rome were extremely buttmad about this and my popularity dropped quite a bit. Not giving a fuck, and looking for even more revenge, I decided to punish the Brutii family as well by rushing over to Greece and capturing Crete, Rhodes and the towns of Sparta and Corinth.

More tears ensued as the Brutii got their shit slapped by the Macedonians (My new bros as I quickly forged an alliance with them once the Brutii retreated from Greece) and were forced to let their Conquest of Greece go for the time being, instead heading further north into Europe to fight some barbarians (Hah! Who's inferior now, *****!). Meanwhile, the Greek cities unleashed their fury upon southern Italy, on some weakly defended Brutii towns as I had signed yet another alliance with them and gifted them gold in return for them attacking the Brutii even further. Now, the Brutii lost one of their cities in Italy already (I have never seen this happen so ealry in the game) and the Greeks are marching towards the other one as we speak.

It just hit me that I am trolling history so badly with all this, it's hilarious. It feels so good being Scipii right now.

Anyone dying in the suicide mission in Mass Effect 2. The squadmates' characters are so well-defined and fleshed out that it's impossible not to feel sorry for them (Except Jacob. He deserved it.)

Assassin's Creed, the first game. I really liked the grand-master of the Assassins, Al Mualim. Or at least, I liked what he wanted me (and Altair) to believe in his "cause".

Sweet, no one has said Bioshock yet :D

The midway twist and the beginning speech both by Andrew Ryan

edit:

Just noticed this is the OP's 1st post on the escapists, welcome to the community dude. Btw, as a piece of advice, if you get curious of why some people have pony avatars use the search bar on "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" because if you make a thread about it you will get troll'd.

It seems I am to be the first to say this, hopefully not the last though. Tranquility Lane. Seriously, Betty/Braun just freaked me the hell out with that whole scenario, it was great gameplay design and scripting and whatnot by Bethesda. Kudos for making me feel something in such a simple task and scene, made all the more so with the end of The Waters Of Life... you know what I'm talking about...

If you haven't guessed what game I'm referring to yet, then look it up on Google, seriously. Then buy it and play it. It's worth it, trust me...

The "Closed Fist" ending (See: Dark Side) Of Jade Empire.
It... touched my bad places, daddy.

Really. Kill/chase off half my team, turn a little girl into a bad demon, and corrupt a benevolent dragon spirit godthing (Shut up, it's been a while) with blood. Or something. They weren't fucking around.

Chrono Trigger, Frog raises his sword in front of the mountain and strikes down with a lightning strike while his theme music plays in the background.

Makes me cry a little bit every time.

I remember a mission at the penultimate level of Medal of Honor Frontline, where, if you snuck up on a guardhouse, you could hear a German soldier radioing his wife and telling her not to worry and that he would be home soon. I never could kill that soldier, I just ran past him.

The moment in Kingdom Hearts 2 when it looked like Goofy died from getting crushed by the boulder. I almost cried.

And then I was scared when I saw the look on Mickey's face when he prepared to get revenge for it. Seeing a character whom is always portrayed as lovable and fun display an dark emotion like hatred or revenge is a scary thing. It was believable, but scary.

I wept when I realized how much I was an asshole to the rival in Pokemon Red.

His grandfather cared more about me than him, I killed his Ratticate, and then, after he achieved his only dream of being the Champion, I took that from him and left him behind.

He's the most depressing character ever.
