My top five played games this year are:
1) Saint's Row the Third. Between going for the Platinum Trophy/100 % completion 'badge' and playing with various online playmates, I ended up putting more time into this game than the previous game in the series despite the disparity of content between the two games. Then again, I couldn't make the main character into an Eastern European female version of King from Tekken in Saint's Row 2,so that might explain all of the additional playtime over SR2. The community contests also helped(two of which I won yet forfeited the prizes somehow).
While the game didn't demand that so many hours be put into it, I still put them in anyway, so yes, I had about as much fun as can be had in the game.
2)Dragon's Dogma. Even though I already have the Platinum Trophy, I still want to uncover all that there is to find in the game, obtain all equipment and max out both the protagonist and pawn alike. I also want to pick up that pointless expensive bauble obtainable only with Rift Crystals and that's going to take some major doing. If only I hadn't purchased most of the other customization options, I might have already gotten to 3,000,000 by now! There isn't any other action-rpg that I've enjoyed to this extent all year and that does indeed include Mass Effect 3.
3) Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Because it was there when no other major RPGs were slated for release at the time, plus there were those items unlocked by that demo that I wanted to try out.
The Achievements weren't too much of a chore to acquire, at that. Other than that, it didn't provide half of the fun of a pure action game or a turn-based rpg.
4)The Elder Scrolls 5:Skyrim. I already played it so much last year that there just wasn't as much left undone to do in-game this year. If I had bought it this year, it would likely be at #1.
5)Yakuza 4. The sad thing is that I won a copy of this game when it was a new release but I put off actually playing it until I played through my then current backlog. I wear the shirt that came with it on a regular basis, though, so I didn't disregard the entire package callously.
For whatever reason, it took until this year to try to play all the way through...and now, I'm getting sidetracked yet again with Dragon's Dogma, Dark Souls(I can only stand to play in short burst thanks to a combination of invasions and what might as well be a requirement to play co-op due to the rate of invasions in some areas. That's without accounting for the odd cheap death or two setting one back a bit. Too much patience required for too little pay-off.) and even Final Fantasy XIII and Hyper Dimension Neptunia(both of which I got around to playing only recently as well).
