I've never really been fond of Nirvana. I mean, they have had some great songs, but I guess after the 1000th time I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit", I just don't like it anymore. I mean, the song even got #1 on one of those VH1 Greatest Songs of the 90s countdowns. I've always felt they have always gotten so much love because of Kurt Cobain. It's sort of the Dark Knight/Heath Ledger situation: something is already great gets an unnecessary "legend" status because someone associated with it dies tragically. Yes, the situation is tragic, but does thinking the movie/band is better than it actually is make one feel better? Would one feel guilt if one did not like the movie or band? They are a great band and probably moved a lot of people, but they get too much padding due to Mr. Cobain.

- Nirvana (I like them but I don't understand how Smells Like Teen Spirit ranks so high)
I don't either, since that's one of the weaker tracks on the album...

God I know I hate when people try to convince you that something is perfect in every way. I remember when my dad sat me down and we had serious talk about Morrowind... it was hilarious it's like he couldn't handle the fact that I didn't like Morrowind so he tried for like a half an hour to explain in fine detail why it was the best RPG ever created...
Thank you! I don't know why Smells Like Teen Spirit is supposed to be so good either. I think they deserve all the praise they get but they have much better songs than that.

Your dad tried to convince you Morrowind was the best thing ever? Ha! That's odd. The only thing my dad's ever tried to convince me of its greatness was the Everly Brothers. Odd because he likes much better music than that. He's the one who got me into bands like Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, The Pixies and The Smashing Pumpkins in the first place. XD
as much as I dislike my mom, I have to say she has a much better taste in music. my dad listens to Dr.Dre and N.W.A. and other assorted gangster rappers but keep in mind I don't hate rap, I just don't think it's as good as say Nirvana or Helmet or Radiohead or Hall & Oats...
Hahahah!! Hall & Oats is awesome XD

I gotta say that I hate rap though. Especially gangsta rap like that. NWA is just....just awful :/

Mum has great taste in music too though. She's into more 80s stuff though. That's why I like bands like Duran Duran, The Cure, Squeeze or The Smiths. Though for some reason, she loves new metal bands like Slipknot, Rob Zombie and even things like Trivium. She actually went with me to see Korn and Rob Zombie a few weeks ago XD
Awww yeah! I saw Korn and Rob Zombie not too long ago as well, Rob hella upstaged Korn though haha.

AC/DC, Guns and Roses. All one-song bands.
Pendulum - remove "Streamline" from their work and they're very average.
Whilst I agree with your comments about The Beatles and Michael Jackson. I disagree with the ones I have quoted.

I'm assuming you have listened to all of Pendulum's albums as you mention "Streamline" from Hold Your Colour so I guess you aren't one of those idiots that is like "Immersion sucks, that maekz Pen-Dulum teh ghey". Whilst Immersion does suck the wang of an ebola ridden camel Pendulum are pretty good. Even if they aren't really DnB anymore.

On that note. Immersion is overrated. It is an average album made to make money of the Pendulum name. I hate it when bands get famous enough to make money out of their name ratehr than their music.
Very good points, well made. Particularly the last paragraph.

Most people criticizing the Beatles seem to miss the point: describing their music (nowadays) as seeming "boring" or "nothing special" is (IMO) facile.

Oh, and I know that this is a "no flame" thread, but if anyone mentions Radiohead, I will destroy you.
Last year I would thrown down the gauntlet and have at you, now, however, I know differently.

Oddly enough, you have Christopher Nolan, and not my massive Radio head fan brother and most of my friends.

Now, I know the closing credits of The Prestige us Thom Yorke's own 'Analyse' and it isn't a Radiohead song...

But it got me interested and then I found joys like Karma Police, Street Spirit, Everything in its Right Place amongst so many others.

I think anyone putting Radiohead up as overrated, while not deserving outright destruction, certainly should go away and listen to their stuff and form an opinion.
I cannot argue with that. Well said.
Additional respect for getting to know Radiohead through a Christopher Nolan film :)

Heh, thanks! One of my favourites as well!

I think I more or less listened to The Eraser for a week straight once I figured out where I'd heard that voice before! :p

It's what the title says, what bands do you think are overrated? To me I would say System of a Down and Avenged Sevenfold, don't get me wrong, they aren't bad, just overrated. People play their songs to much and idolize them for their songs which follow a very similar set up every time.
while i dont have much of an opinion of System of a down, since i dont listen to them much. A7X use to be REALLY good. Waking the Fallen is probably their best album and it is still great. But their last two albums have been crap, hell they used auto-tune at one point.

OT: 3OH!3 is just terrible, and over rated. Fallout Boy is pop rock so they cant be anything but over rated. And Disturbed as well( well for the overrated part)

White noise, that's all it is.
They are atleast better than any modern music.... well it's not hard to be better than modern music than it's all screaming, bad words, horrible musicans and usless lyrics that don't mean anything.
Sounds like your close-minded. Both of you that is.
Nope, I give all music a chanse but I know what I like and what I dislike.
Quoting you again: "They are atleast better than any modern music.... well it's not hard to be better than modern music than it's all screaming, bad words, horrible musicans and usless lyrics that don't mean anything."

You really gave music a chance, when you brushed off any modern music, as horrbile musicians and all screaming, and useless lyrics. Do even know so much music to make that kind of statement? I bet not. Overall this statement you made sounds very much like your putting it as a fact rather than an opinion.

You might not like screaming, but that doesnt make music bad.
You have no idea, I have lisenied to nearly all more or less famous modern bands everything from R&B too death metal and it's all shit, exept Rammstein and a few other songs by others while the older music is soooooooooooooooo much better in everyway

Because the most popular band of each genre is a representation of it? *Sarcasm*

If Rammstein is the only good modern music, then you dont know anything about music.

Tell me what Death Metal band did you listen too?

Older music is only better, because you refuse to be a bit more open-minded towards new things.
Ever heard of spotify? you can lisen to nearly anything and I've been lurking trouth nearly all kinds of music they have both famous and underground bands/singers and I don't like it it all blows why would I remember the name of a band that makes shit? than I instead can remember the name of good bands, I'm not good at names my favorite bans is the clash and I don't even know the name of the members. but I comfess it exist A LOT horrible music from the 50's to the early 90's but I think the music that is classed as "Good" (nearly all genres) from the 50's to the e90's is A LOT better than the music classed as "good" now, I see you seem pissed beacose I think modern is shit but it's my opinion I like led zeppelin the clash U.K subs rolling stones Bojangles and a lot more(bojangles dosent mean anything it's yust there to make the situation less tenced) and it's ok if you like modern music if it's rap modern rock alternative or black metal but I think it suck and you can't do anything about it exectly how I can't do anything about you likeing modern music. And wtf do you know how much I know about music you are right I don't know shit I only know I lissened too most of it and I know what I like and don't like and that a thing you cant conter in anyway....

Its funny you say its your opinion, when you present it as fact.

Also listening to music on spotify does not equal to knowing all music.

Also, are you gonna call these modern songs shit?

[youtube.=_fhVLykF3nU]
For me my opinions IS fact. And ofc spotify isn't equal to all music and it's not the only way to hear different kinds of music ever heard about radio, CD and youtube? :p And the song you sended was/is really bad... I really mean it, horrible.
