White noise, that's all it is.
No, this is white noise:
OnT: I would go so far as to say that rock music as a genre is overrated. And with that: just about every rock band in existence. Simply because people worship these rock musicians as if they were gods. Most of them are proficient musicians, I can acknowledge that. But they're not any geniuses. No, not even Frank Zappa or John Lennon or Paul McCartney. Ok, maybe Frank Zappa was. But he was an exception. Anyway, that's not the point.

The point is that many rock musicians are treated as geniuses and gods when in reality they aren't. Some are simply very creative human beings. Some are not so creative and just rip of others ideas. Most are just in it for the money and fame. Now, don't tell me bands like Kiss or AC/DC or Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones or whatever were out there with a real artistic agenda. They were just out to sell the myth about the rock lifestyle, you know. Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. I'll admit there are exceptions but that is, again, beside the point.

One more thing: the music in itself is really not that sophisticated, which is fine for all you Neanderthals out there, I guess. But I need something more satisfying for both my mind and soul because I do think rock music can tear at your soul, in some ways. Find something more peaceful and "healthy". That's my advice to you all.

Yep, that's all folks. Sorry if it got a little preachy. Not my intention really, just happened to be that way.
I like white noise, it makes me sleepy.

Like the OP, I would definitely say System of a Down and Avenged Sevenfold, and I would also add Paramore. Im sure there are other bands but those are off the top of my head.

I forgot Paramore completely, I agree, they are overrated as well.

The Beatles, Disturbed, The Eagles, System of a Down, and Metallica. I love rock music, it's just that I don't care for these bands. I think they're overrated

The Beatles. That's about it.

I'm saddened by the SOAD hate, but the people who worship Mesmerize (and B.Y.O.B.) as the greatest album (and song) ever ruined it for the rest of us.

In fact, I'm going to go right ahead and say that everything by SOAD after Steal This Album isn't just incredibly overrated but aren't that great at all anyway.

Metal in general (mostly overrated on these metal-centric forums). It just combines a few things I generally hate out of my music, machismo (tough guys actin' real tough), and while women DO get involved in the bands, they tend to fall into the whole "girls need to act like one of the boys" thing. Bloated and needlessly complex music (which to me is the symptom of the bigger problem, which is this whole idea that complexity=good) with too much distortion. No real groove to the music. No real pop sensibilities to speak of. Just turns me off from every single direction.
tempted to disagree with you on a few points but don't want to detract from the point of this thread.

To add to my personal list of utterly unwarranted acclaim:

Eminem - Just piss off and go and listen to Tribe Called Quest, or Public Enemy, come back and agree that you have failed to make a rap album approaching anything that these groups did for your genre.

Blink 182 - Childish subject matter, badly expressed by subpar musicians (with the possible exception of that titan of mediocrity that is Travis Barker) who cannot perform live and who badly need to realise that it is probably time to grow up.

Phil Collins - acceptable as part of Peter Gabriel era Genesis, pitiable as anything else. In the Air Tonight is not good, you only think you like it because a commercial on TV convinced you that you did or you were intimidated by Mike Tyson's startling capacity for shitness on the Hangover (and here I thought he'd sunk low enough by beating his girlfriend, and biting a guy's ear off).

Any metal band who has achieved mainstream success in the last decade - You know who you are Trivium and KSE's of the world, and all the little bastard children you spawned from your unholy loins. For simultaneously making metal acceptable to a wider range of people and dragging the genre kicking and screaming down to a new creative nadir, I salute you!

It's what the title says, what bands do you think are overrated? To me I would say System of a Down and Avenged Sevenfold, don't get me wrong, they aren't bad, just overrated. People play their songs to much and idolize them for their songs which follow a very similar set up every time.

While I agree with what you've said about Avenged Sevenfold, I'd like some examples of the System tracks that are similar.
System is just REALLY over played. The set up comment was more about Avanged Sevenfold.
Ah I get ya, and I've gotta agree, though I think its a shame that they never show the videos for Sugar or Spiders which are two of my favourite songs by them. Then again that's just over here, not sure what its like on your music channels.
What I found odd is that you agreed with me about Avenged Sevenfold, a lot of people disagree with me about that.
I can't stand them, the singer sounds like a fucking vacuum cleaner at times. The only good thing I can even think of saying about them is that the drumming was good, that's it.

You know, I really like some Queen, but I don't think their stuff was amazing. Maybe it was Freddie's vocals (I can be really picky about my vocalists), maybe it was their slower pace compared to most of the stuff I like.

Also Oasis, and quite a lot of Muse.

I got Toxicity for £3, so there is NO reason why everyone else shouldn't already own it.

Lil Wayne. The guys got a bad voice, which can be "covered up" by having songs that make the voice work (Axl Rose with Welcome To The Jungle) but he doesn't.

Then I have to hear all about his "bs arrest" and how someones out to get him or whatever crap they come up with. That happens to a lot of people. Don't act like it's some huge conspiracy.

I don't want to say Led Zeppelin. They have some awesome songs and all that. But they're not the #1 band ever. There are bands I atleast like more.

I figure as long as it's not flaming and you're pointing out things I said that you feel may be incorrect factually, I see no problem. I'll be the first to admit that metal's far from my genre, I'm hardly an insider perspective.

This is definitely the impression I've gotten though.

Explain? I'm interested.
OT: Slipknot.
Ok, they're not as overrated as others and it may just be where I go to school at, but people who have horrible taste in music always talk about Stadium Arcadium being an amazing CD and turning them into RHCP fans even though they've never heard good songs like Scar Tissue or Can't Stop. Also everyone says Flea is a godly bassist, but Steve Harris and Cliff Burton were WAY better.
Yeah I get that, my main attraction to them has always been John though.

Pretty much this list. Add Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Disturbed, and Sepultura for good measure.

The Beatles, System of a Down, AC/DC, and everything on 107.9, my local "popular" music station.

The only one I'll explain is Beatles, they're a great band and make good music, but people worship them like they're the greatest band ever formed. I realize their music was absolutely revolutionary for their time, but for someone who was born in the mid-nineties, it's just average.

The Beatles?! come on what they get is for the most part well deversed. For alot of bands you have to understand their context, like alot in a lot of early rock (older then 1969) there wasn't a real presedent.

Getting back on topic, I think any band that some way involves the devil or satanic whatever, like Iron Maiden, in their image is overrated. I'd illaburate, but I don't want to get suspended agian.

Pearl Jam.
Really? I know their new stuff is crap, but Oceans, Black, Jeremy, and Even Flow are pretty good
I think it's more me, because the riffs and lyrics are excellent, I just don't like the Eddie Vedder's voice. If someone else sang I'd be perfectly happy.
Fair enough. I'm sure I've said that about some bands before

Most bands with a fanbase are overrated a some point. The overrated bands that irk me are.... probably just any metal band that has attained mainstream success in the past 15 years. Metal is undergoing the slow and painful process into splitting into two distinct genres, and a lot of weak metal is coming from that.

To name some examples of throughly overrated bands: current Metallica, Dragonforce, Bullet for My Valentine (or whatever band has probably replaced them) and Linkin Park.

Also most arena rock IMO. I cannot tolerate bands like AC/DC or Journey any longer. Really.
