Explain? I'm interested.
OT: Slipknot.
Ok, they're not as overrated as others and it may just be where I go to school at, but people who have horrible taste in music always talk about Stadium Arcadium being an amazing CD and turning them into RHCP fans even though they've never heard good songs like Scar Tissue or Can't Stop. Also everyone says Flea is a godly bassist, but Steve Harris and Cliff Burton were WAY better.

A Day to Remember and The Devil Wears Prada. They do NOTHING unique or special. AT all.

Beatles

Nirvana

U2

Kings of Leon

Megadeth

Sooo aside from U2, who are purely the devil, these are bands IMO who have more credit and respect than they deserve but who I don't hate. KoL were a pretty cool band when they made a primitive racket and before they copied the U2 playbook on studio sterility. Megadeth are the weakest of the 'Big Four' IMO due to a personal distaste for the vocals, and just a lack of heaviness for a thrash band. Nirvana I like, I really do, its just that unfortunately Kurt had to go die and mythologise himself and the band before there was any real retrospective appraisal of his work which I believe to be impressive but not godlike. Finally the Beatles who may be an important band in terms of influence on pop culture and youth culture but I find them to be at best to be mere catchy and poppy, and at worst pretentious self indulgent artists with very little depth to their musical or songwriting talents, sorry just an opinion.

Honestly I am surprised. This thread has gotten very little flaming which is good because it's topic matter is normally flame central.

A lot of the popular bands people are mentioning are actually widely hated (like Nickelback).

On topic, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. The former makes rather dull metal that lacks the melody of softer kinds and the hardness of the heavier varieties. The latter is somewhat better, but Dark Side of the Moon does not deserve to be a major classic.

I agree with you 100% on Prada. I think they're good, but people portray them as gods. And as for A Day to Remember......I really like and hate that they got so popular with their last album. I got to see them live and they are very very very good live. Jeremy's(both) voice is very unique, it's just that EVERY other band tries to sound like them. Now i'm just rambling...

must...control...outrage...at...opinions...other...than...own, seriously, not trying to argue the toss with you here and now but thats some pretty big smackdown to be laying on LedZep if you take into account the historical musical context xP

Massive respect that you can come to those conclusions, I know the pressure's on to pay lip service to these two constantly, so if you've found enough evidence that points you in that direction then fair play.

It's what the title says, what bands do you think are overrated? To me I would say System of a Down and Avenged Sevenfold, don't get me wrong, they aren't bad, just overrated. People play their songs to much and idolize them for their songs which follow a very similar set up every time.

While I agree with what you've said about Avenged Sevenfold, I'd like some examples of the System tracks that are similar.

Metallica

I've never really understood why their this great thing in metal. Their singer comes off as bland to me and they're music is kinda lame. sure they can shred but nowhere near the level of say...dragon force so really while they're not terrible, nothing about them seems to make them stand out among all the other ho-hum metal bands and yet people fucking love them, christ they made a Guitar Hero (or was it rock band?)game based entirely around their music.
They're definitely overrated, don't get me wrong. But I think you're looking at the band in the entirely wrong direction. First, Most of these fans pretend black album and beyond don't exist. There's a LOT of bad stuff on those albums. Secondly, they're loved not for there shredding, but for how well they work together. The melodies are excellent, and their (good) songs have a symphonic feel. The music they make isn't just the chaotic "shredding" of most metal, it has a flow to it that I feel a lot of other metal bands miss. Granted, I'm not a fan of metal. I like Metallica, and that's about it.

I highly disagree. They are the greatest gosh dang band in the world.
That's exactly why we consider them overrated. I'm really not sure if your post was sarcasm or not, due to the way it was written. For this reason, I'm taking you seriously

Talking here in terms of music alone, not cultural significance, I'd say the Beatles and though I do like their music, Led Zep. Though good they just aren't as good as some people/worshippers would like to make out. I don't dispute their respective cultural and musical impacts in their own time. However, the problem is that now even many young fans tend to write off any bands that improved these musical innovations simply because they dont have the legendary status. People seem to confuse the significance of the music with the music itself.

Most of those "classic bands" that get claimed to be better than all modern music again and again. I have nothing against these bands persay, and I enjoy most of their music, I just can't stand the arrogance of the people who believed they were the second comming of Jesus.

System is just REALLY over played. The set up comment was more about Avanged Sevenfold.

I personally believe that Metalica is hugely overrated, and it seems I'm not the only one with that opinion.

I'm surprised no one has said Rebecca Mayes yet. I thought that would be a perfect edgey joke for this site.

Rush, U2, Pink Floyd, and Coldplay (I can tolerate the other three, but I fucking despise coldplay)
