Which character did you just want to protect from just...everything? Not just enemies? For me, thats aura from the ./hack games/ The games after mutation sucked, but whenever Aura showed up, or I even just heard her theme, I just wanted to hug her and protect her from the evils of the world.
Here's a link to her theme

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgPjpdYdsxk&feature=player_embedded#!

who was it for you?
And then you went and shivved her in the gut you must of felt miserable
Oh yes and for me if we can go with anime series as well as games I would have to say fuuko from clannad her and her starfish.

No one in games I use them to release my pent up aggression from work so anyone cute and cuddly is going to get smeared under the booot of my heavily armoured space marine
yes, we all love Fuuko and her starfish, and that absurdly cute big Dango family :D

In anime, I guess I would say Tsubaki from soul eater, and Moe! Nagato from the Haruhi Suzumiya movie/book 4 of the light novels

For me definitely has to be a "Little Sister" from Bioshock (1 and 2). I mean, I'm a bit of a jerk but they're little girls for god's sake. Plus in Bioshock 2, I felt bad every time they fearfully said "you're not going to hurt me are you daddy? I've been good, really."
I could never bring myself to harvest them... the connection is even closer in 2...*sniff*

Cereza from Bayonetta. She's THE cutest, little kid I've ever seen in a video game. They created a child who wasn't annoying, or needed escorting (well..ok, bar a few times, but even those were well-executed). Incredible. I'm not generally a fan of children, but I'd be elated to have one like Cereza.

From gaming, it would have to be the little sisters from Bioshock, expand to any medium and pretty much any small girl with provoke a protective feeling (the long-term effect of having a much younger sister in real life). A special mention has to go out to Setsuko from Grave of the Fireflies which I watched for the first time yesterday, she was hugely adorable. (and I'm still trying to recover from the movie now...)

I got the same feeling to protect the little sisters. I couldn't see them to be harmed. Maybe I should have a daughter when I have a kid?

Without a doubt, I have to say Saria. If you don't know that name, then I'm sorry for your loss. Outside of games, I'd have to pick Faen Sullisin'rune from the webcomic called Drowtales: Moonless Age. That girl has gone through so much horror and torment during the story, I just want to hug all the pain away. Anyone or anything that would try to hurt her in any way would be eviscerated without hesitation or mercy.

AURA ;_;

I hated that ending. I felt so terrible.

People have already mentioned quite a few of mine:

Hope of FF13
Alistair of DA:O >.>;
Any Fire Emblem unit due to permadeath.
.... Oscar, Boyd, and Pelleas of FE 9-10 in particular.

...... I just realized that the games these guys are from requires you to shiv TWO of these characters in the stomach, both Aura and Pelleas.

I feel awful now. : (

The cast of Fire Emblem games. Particularly the Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn guys. I always reset my game if anyone died. Even if it meant starting the whole fight over.

My trainees in AC Brotherhood. IDK why, but I always had my crossbow ready when watching them fight incase things went south.

The dog from Fable 2. When that bandit kicked him I backed that mother fucker into a corner and whaled on him until he died.

Zoey from LFD. Yes, I realize that the character is played by another player, but I always play Louis and I always figured they had something going on. Therefore (getting into the character), I believed Louis would sacrifice himself to save Zoey and played the game that way. I would stick by Zoey for the entire level, and if we ever got seperated, I would fight through hordes to get back to her, just to help protect her.

Funnily enough, he was the only one I actively wanted to kill. Go figure.

ODST troopers in Halo 3. They're special and whenever they die I just have to keep restarting the mission until they survive through it.
Definitely. I loved the marines, and restarted missions just like you just to make sure they survived. As a Spartan, I felt it was my duty.

I love those guys! Even if their programming is a bit weird, I feel terrible when they die.
Plus even the master chief can't drive and operate a turret at the same time, so they have their uses.

I dunno what I'd say, maybe Alyx in HL2ep2.(Well, the other episodes as well, but especially 2)

Tali. Because she seems fragile at times, that whole bit about her father, and her voice. If I could make love to her voice I would.

Colette from Tales of Symphonia. Anytime she got kidnapped or harmed I made sure to absolutely destroy everything standing in my way until she was safe. It was even worse once she became a mute. I'm actually thinking of getting a tattoo of her hand tracing a letter on Lloyd's hand.

Oh god the things I wish I could have done to Remiel. I wish I could transfer Remiel into God of War and slaughter him.

The little sisters. Seems you do get softer the older you get. In the first game i actually harvested a few of them, the heartless little shit i was.

Two years later in Bioshock 2 i got all fuzzy inside carrying them on my shoulders while they babbled about angels,

Carlie from Seiken Densetsu 3 (secret of mana 2).

Reasons

1) she is the best healer in the game.
2) shes 15 and look like a little kid so when battling monster you cant help but feel like you need to keep her safe and out of harms way.
