Tali'zora Vas Normandy. If you do not hug her in her loyalty mission, even if you play as a renegade, you are a horrible, horrible human being.

Never really got attached to any characters or NPCs, except when it came to Dogmeat in Fallout3. Ended up keeping him locked up in my home in Megaton from fear of him dying.

Which character did you just want to protect from just...everything? Not just enemies? For me, thats aura from the ./hack games/ The games after mutation sucked, but whenever Aura showed up, or I even just heard her theme, I just wanted to hug her and protect her from the evils of the world.
Here's a link to her theme

who was it for you?
And then you went and shivved her in the gut you must of felt miserable
For me it's Heather from Vampire the Masqurade: Bloodlines
At first she was just a free humanity point in my eyes then later, someone to boss around while I was on the bottom rung, later still I began to feel guilt over her sudden desire to give up everything for me (my first WoD game, didn't know about the blood bond) but was unwilling to give up the only one I trusted, then at the end... well let's just say the final death was too good for them.

Marona from Phantom Brave.
The little girl is just too freakin' cute, any cut scene involving her AND her quick to be best friend Castile is likely to send you into a diabetic coma.
Yet half of everyone in the game seems completely dedicated to trying to make her cry, quite successfully. Needless to say, it's quite satisfying beating up a select few NPCs while brandishing Cacti.

Although I also giggle uncontrollably to myself when she gets Zetta Beamed in Makai Kingdoms...maybe I'm not so good at this protective stuff.

I would have to say Zoey, from Left 4 Dead. She got incapped by a 25 damage pounce from a hunter, and she just screamed once, and yelled "GET IT OFF", and something about that just touched me, I don't know. I was playing on my own, and I just yelled "GET THE HELL OFF OF HER" and ran to her while unloading my auto shotgun. I helped her up, and healed her, and the moment passed. But it was just that "One of your best friends is about to die" moment that the game managed to procure from me that got me. I don't know, I can't really explain it.

My starter Pokemon, i rarely let them die, they only do from critical hits or if i'm being overpowered.

Also Batman from Arkham Asylum, i don't want my childhood saviour to die D:

Or My character from Fallout NV...but damn them Deathclaws D:

Pretty much every friendly who becomes involved in combat in every game I've played. I even take it as a personal affront when I lose a fighter or a tank, or especially an engineer in Supreme Commander.

Nobody really, it's hard for me to show empathy for another character in a video game. I dunno if it's the medium or what I just can't do it.

The little sisters from Bioshock 1 & 2. I just finished another play through of Bioshock last night and I had to re-start the level where you have to protect the little sister as she's harvesting ADAM four times coz i didn't want to let a single one die.

My grunt and marine allies in Halo 2.

The marines are hilarious and the grunts look so defenseless. Having anyone of them die makes me shout "NOOO!" and quickly reset. 20 minute missions then become 2 hours long.(Damn you flood! And your instant kill infection forms!)

Crow from fragile dreams. He had so much hope, then to see him so broken when you see him for the last time, i just couldn't help but want to cry for him.

And at Demongeneral: I loved those games a lot. Aura was an amazing character for how little she appeared. A goddess denied her powers and place.

I keep hearing about this game. Is it any good, and is there any way to play it on console since my pc is held together with old headphones and freezes a lot?

I get far to attached to too many characters.
But I guess the one who did it the most for me was Boone from New Vegas. I just wanted to give him a massive hug :D

The marines in Starcraft 2. Needless to say, I'm not the best of Starcraft players.

Every single soldier in any game fighting by my side. I do the same for rts's in that I basically only attack once I have either air superiority or the largest army ever.

Needless to say I don't do very well in rts multiplayer.

Rex from New Vegas
he kinda reminded me of dogmeat
plus i felt a sense of duty to the king for letting me look after him
and i'd hate to get back to him and deliver the news that Rex was a deadman

Besides the mentioned Little Sisters, I got surprisingly attached to Alyx from Half Life.

I found myself charging in front of her with my shotgun on more than one occasion just because I didn't want anyone hurting her. I don't have a crush on the gal, so I suppose she just stirred up some weird friendship emotions in me.

Lucy from the Assassin's Creed series. I liked her from the first game, and she only got better in 2 and Brotherhood. She's really a great character, especially if you choose to do all of the dialogue options with her throughout the 3 games. Brotherhood really had an impact on me with this fondness for her character, because she actually has quite a pivotal role in the game.
So when YOU had to stab her that was probably quite a kick in the balls huh?
But I'd say I'm more that way toward Desmond; I feel bad for the guy, dragged from one bad situation to another.

Alistair from Dragon Age..... I'm such a sucker >.<
You're not the only one; I love Alistair, he's so adorkable.
