Herbert "Daring" Dashwood of Fallout 3 fame. From the evil racist ghoul.

All my NPC allies, really. I fucking hate when my buddies die when I could easily survive the hit.

Eh, is this games only, or other things as well?
Because Satoko Hojo from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni/Kai certainly set off my protective instincts >.>
Would have died to protect her, had that been asked >.>
Can't think of that ever happening in a game, though... it might have, I just don't remember.
I felt the same way. I was so glad in the second season when her uncle got the justice he deserved.

Tali from Mass Effect is the only one for me

you see all the other characters that are "supposed to" invoke our protective instincts
(Ashley, Yorda, Estelle, Hope, Ellica) don't have enough, or likable enough personality for me to continue giving a crap after they out live their usefulness

but Tali's different
during the suicide mission after Tali goes through the vent to open the gate she's done her job. but I always end up sending her back to the ship with the survivors just so she doesn't get hurt in the final battle, even though she probably wouldn't appreciate that.

I actually cried when everyone managed to save her without using violence ;~;
Not very often than an animé effects me like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni/Kai does <3

I love those guys! Even if their programming is a bit weird, I feel terrible when they die.
ooooh THIS!, also, the odst's sent to 'help' you.
the first step was always to give them a gaus hog and make sure they all had carbines XD
( well, in halo 2 and 3 anyway @ the carbines XD. brole their AI and turned them into crashot owners, and into GODS with a gauss hog. )

aww hell not dom XD -always played as dom for co op, dom. is an anoying latino, with verry verry bad luck that he actualy found his wife there.
the scene anyed and repulsed me more then it made me sorry for him, prolly something to do with it being so out of place with the gears mindset.
kind of like seeing a spacemarine from 40k play with my little ponies.

Protective?
Hmm. Tali'Zorah caught my attention in Mass Effect 1, if only because her plight was interesting and her character surprisingly well developed (for an ancillary character at that).

Prior to this one...probably Freya from FF9.
Why? She was the only one with any sense for most of the story. Everyone else was either acting like a "Know it all/Emo 12 year old", or mentally WAS a 12 year old (Steiner...)
Mature characters are a true rarity in JRPGs.

Never really got attached to any characters or NPCs, except when it came to Dogmeat in Fallout3. Ended up keeping him locked up in my home in Megaton from fear of him dying.
So to save your dog from an expanse of open land and regular exercise you locked it in a house, in a town built around an undetonated nuclear device which is leaking radioactivity into the water?

I think there may be a flaw in that reasoning somewhere, I just can't put my finger on it.

For me I find it hard to think of a character I went out of my way to protect, I mean sure I protect my allies in games but that's because they're more useful to me alive than they are dead, now if it gave me a situation where them being dead would be of greater benefit than their continued survival I would gladly feed them a bullet to the forehead.

I know when my mates and I would play L4D we'd keep Zoey alive be we could, but that was because Zoey was the only non retarded AI companion and was actually of help.

For me definitely has to be a "Little Sister" from Bioshock (1 and 2). I mean, I'm a bit of a jerk but they're little girls for god's sake. Plus in Bioshock 2, I felt bad every time they fearfully said "you're not going to hurt me are you daddy? I've been good, really."
I could never bring myself to harvest them... the connection is even closer in 2...*sniff*
Aye. It's probably because this time around you are actually the one who's whole life is charged to protecting them. That, and they say the darn-est things.

I got the same feeling to protect the little sisters. I couldn't see them to be harmed. Maybe I should have a daughter when I have a kid?
Hahaha. Good luck with that. If you're hoping for a daughter your gonna get like a boy or twin-boys. The trick is to not want one.

The dog from Fable 2. When that bandit kicked him I backed that mother fucker into a corner and whaled on him until he died.
Lol! 7pts for making me laugh. But good going old chap, show that dog kicker what-ho!

Also I assume you got the "Chicken Kicker" name, yes? Damn chickens I hate them so much for what reason I know not.

For me, thats aura from the ./hack games/ The games after mutation sucked, but whenever Aura showed up, or I even just heard her theme, I just wanted to hug her and protect her from the evils of the world.
Here's a link to her theme

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgPjpdYdsxk&feature=player_embedded#!
For me it would be Aura to.
As well as Vivi from FFIX: (Changed the vid. This one made me want to hold him more...)
I got SOOOOO Pissed when Zidane called Vivi a brat in Disk 3. I was like "HEY! Nobody talks shit about Vivi! NOBODY!!!!!"

Adelle from FFT A2 (Who ever made her picture SERIOUSLY fucked up on her name.)

I Always made sure she lived in all the missions. ALWAYS. And now she is my strongest unit at lvl 89. (second strongest is Luso at 78. So ya i went overboard with her...) With the best armor and Dual blades with the highest speed in any battle. She is now a living tank. I pity any who fight her.

Navi from OoT (I am one of the few people who loved that little ball of light!)

And Atoli from the .Hack G.U. Series.

ODST troopers in Halo 3. They're special and whenever they die I just have to keep restarting the mission until they survive through it.
I feel the same way about my Elites in Halo 2/3. Whenever they come into the battle I work like mad and around the clock to make sure that my fellow Sangheilian brethren live to battle the brutes another day.

OT: Also outside of gameplay the one character who's honor I have defended a lot, and at great length, more so even then the Arbiter himself, is Ashley Williams from Mass Effect.
During the game I make sure, like crazy, that she survives Virmire and then out of game I spend a lot and I mean a lot of my time making huge walls of text to defend her honor. To disprove the accusations that she is some kind of 'god nut racist' or whatever.

I've done it so very many times now that I can actually call up all of my arguments to defend her, in perfect detail no less, from memory. So yeah, you could say she is one I love to defend, not just in game but on the forums as well.

Also I worked like crazy and around the clock to ensure the survival of my team in Mass Effect 2. Even the ones I didn't like all that much, because I felt entitled to ensure their survival.

Also, I found it very hard not to have my heart melt when I was protecting the Little Sisters in Bioshock. Because I have a parental instinct even as a teenage boy and was very much concerned for their wellbeing even then.

EDIT: Also Veronica in New Vegas because, I dunno, she just grew on me I guess.
