I'm 27, so I was right there with you in age and maturity, and I have to say nothing changed in my day-to-day life. Though I think our country has gone to shit because of it. All the "safety first!" attitudes and calling anyone that has a different ideal a "terrorist." People are too willing to be oppressed in the name of national security, and I want it the old way again.

Chances are from things I've read history-wise that the country hasn't changed that much and I'm just aware of the bullshit more now, but I can't shake the feeling that the terrorists won because of how much fear they have instilled on us. I'm not scared, I'm pissed off.

Well I was in the 4th Grade so I really had no cares in the world. So the only thing that I really worried about was my dad's office building being attacked. But I only had that fear for a couple of weeks after 9/11 but once I got back into the routine of school, come home hang out with friends, dinner, do homework, watch tv, and go to bed I just kind of forgot about it. I'm an optimistic person though so no matter how bad things get I know they'll turn around it all just takes a little time and patience.

EDIT: I'd also like to say fuck George W. Bush its gonna take years to fix all the shit he fucked up with his policies. I have hope that Obama can get it done though unless BP keeps blowing up their oil rigs.

Would you say you tried to ignore everything?

Im about to turn 23 in like three months, so back in 2001 I guess I was 13/14 years old, so I wasn't as much a kid as I was a teenager.

Still, the actual event made me basically go: "Well what goes around, comes around."

It was hardly secret knowledge that the U.S government and military had been fucking around with the rest of the world to excessive degrees and the middle east in particular, hence it didn't come as any surprise to me that a bunch of middle eastern terrorists went and did some spectacular terrorist attacks on U.S soil.

The U.S as a nation had it coming, and I realized this back then as well. Too bad that it is always innocent citizens that has to suffer for the idiocy of politicians and the military...

Nothing has really affected me. I just have to sit through a "moment" (A.K.A- 3 minutes) of silence before learning. School is one of the safest places to be when shit goes down... the exception being school shootings.

Thankyou, Alan Greenspan- just go with me hypothetically here. Haven't got one of you to respond reflecting on how your life might be different or what you really remember about the times. I think, as is par for the escapist, people are responding to the thread title.
Or... life wouldn't be any different. If buildingses hadn't got blow'd ups, the economy would still be shit and fox news would still exist.

The only thing changed was the mass media landscape.

I was about 7, and it happened a million miles away.

I cannot remember where I was, nor can I remember much changing.

It affects me now in that I'm a liberal and everyone I see seems to be a fucking right-wing nutcase with a vendetta against anyone with brown-ish skin. I jest, sort of.

To be honest, it's quite fun to see people so openly contradict themselves like the Republicans have been doing in America, concerning the Islamic centre near Ground Zero.

9/11 never affected me. To me it was just an excuse for the USA to invade a 3rd world country to get more oil and to make bad realistic shooting games for the next decade.

I feel i'm going to get hunted down like the animal I am for saying this.

The only thing that changed for my family is that my mum is now scared of flying. That is about it really, our views on people never changed.

And I guess THAT affected no one in these forums for more than a few weeks? That the most noticeable effects are some paltry security hassles?

Come on- one of you come clean and open up and tell me what you really remember beyond "I got out of school early."

Or... no one remembers anything specific because mass media is little more than white noise these days.

Hmm, apart from ruining a holiday. And making security in America Airports a pain in the ass, nothing much.

Actually, having said that, I was introduced to Conspiracy theories through 9/11 and the moon landings.

Which lead me to question a lot. And made me read some interesting literature.

I think I'll try asking this question with careful verbage in another 10-20 years when young people are more capable of self-reflection.

9/11 didn't really do anything to me. Although I am sacred fairly easily and I have had a few sleepless nights over the whole 2012-alien-doomsday, but i'm over that now. People shouldn;t joke about the end of the world. It isn't nice.

It's hard to interact with people 5 or 6 years younger than you. I am apparently very good at it however. People always wonder how I get little kids to warm up to me, and they wonder how it's possible seeing as I'm 6'8'' and rather imposing in most people's opinions.

Younger people are drawn to me probably because I'm big, and strong. Also maybe because I'm protective (bullies don't go near their targets when the giant is standing right next to them), and I would never let harm come to anyone within sight range of me.

What's odd is that I have no trouble associating with any age group, the elderly like me because I help out when I can, like opening doors and stuff like that. I'm not a saint, and some people have minor dislike for me (I accidentally bump into them and say I'm sorry, and every other time after that they give me a sour look), but as a rule I tend to be liked.

I personally was not affected by 9/11, seeing as how I live in Canada, and I've always felt safe where I live.

I totally agree with you except the bit about shooting games.

I was a kid so no, it didn't do anything.
And if a family member had touched you when you were a kid, would that do nothing too? You have to realize people are most impacted by what's around them during their formative years? Can you give me any examples at all of what you noticed that was different in your own little bubble amongst your community, your family- things that affected attitudes and happiness- in the years that followed the greatest turning point in recent history?

9/11 has never really affected me, aside from the fact they've rendered airports completely paranoid.
This is also my answer.
The same. 2,995 people died, but how many people have died in the middle east since then, how many have died from natrual disasters and continue to die? The whole '9/11 changed everything' attitude that some americans have kind of irks me sometimes. All it changed for me is that I now have to go through increasingly ludicrous degrees of security at the airport.
"Now take off your shoes, take out the shoelaces, pull out all your pockets, say 'Aaaah', take these laxatives and return the results in this dixie cup. Good, next!"
