Had my first day of FILM 2601, the Business of Superheroes. Met my instructor, assembled my team for a group project, and watched Unbreakable. Yeah, this is going to be an awesome class.
The class goals involve learning how to identify the conventions and iconography of superhero films, analyze the role of source material in adaptations, the economic role of superhero movies, and - because it's a film studies class - deconstruct meaning from the films and materials. We're going to accomplish this, in our group projects, by pitching a film or TV adaptation for a comicbook series (My group is assigned The Runaways.) and creating mock production blogs and press materials.
In short, sweetest elective ever. It'll be fun, and it'll give me and my merry band of nerds a chance to really show off our talents in a way that a twenty-page essay doesn't allow us. A much needed change of pace.
(PS: Forgot to mention - our required readings include The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. I'm set!)
