I've seen a few of his stand ups. I like him, the sheer absurdity of the things his Pub Landlord character come out with should be evidence enough it's an act, while some of his jokes might get a little too close for comfort for some his overall act mocks the old-fashioned British views more, it's a self depreciating parody.
I prefer Time Gentleman Please to his stand up shows though and if I remember correctly he was on Time Commanders, brilliant series, and was the only one who knew what they were doing.
He also did a documentary where he visited Germany, Al Murray that is, not the Pub Landlord, it was quite good and gave me yet more reasons to visit the country one day, as if I needed any more.
