What Do Americans Think of This Bloke

I've seen a few of his stand ups. I like him, the sheer absurdity of the things his Pub Landlord character come out with should be evidence enough it's an act, while some of his jokes might get a little too close for comfort for some his overall act mocks the old-fashioned British views more, it's a self depreciating parody.

I prefer Time Gentleman Please to his stand up shows though and if I remember correctly he was on Time Commanders, brilliant series, and was the only one who knew what they were doing.

He also did a documentary where he visited Germany, Al Murray that is, not the Pub Landlord, it was quite good and gave me yet more reasons to visit the country one day, as if I needed any more.

Funny concept, but he's no Eddy Izzard. Class and versatility. This chap's dressed as a school boy trying to tell people that physics is daft.

Please forgive me for sounding limey there as I'm American.

It was allright, I'm not rushing out to get his stand up albums or anything, but i got a couple chuckles out of it. A right sight better than what passes of for a comedian in America these days. Brian Regan, Larry the Cable guy, Jeff Foxworthy... ugh.

Ugh, I like a lot of British comedy but this Al Murry was annoying. In fact from that video he does what I really don't like about a lot of American comedians do, the long (&%^ing Shaggy dog story. You wait freaking forever and the punchline just isn't that funny.

Now Jimmy Carr on the other hand I think is hilarious. (Somewhat NSFW)


Generally, quick, and rapid fire jokes. Sure, sometimes they tread into tasteless but I kind of enjoy that.

as a matter of fact that "bacon is the proof of god" is hid only "good" performance.

My reaction? A solid "Eeeeeeehhhhhhh...".

I chuckled a couple of times, but only because of how stupid he was acting. I don't care if it's a "parody", because of two things.

1. I don't ever encounter people like this (seeing as how I'm not British), and therefore can't really appreciate the mockery.

2. Even if I did "get" his satire, he's just too obnoxious for it to be entertaining.

Whilst I do enjoy some of Al Murreys Work I have to be in the right frame of mind for it; calling him a talentless hack kinda ignores his Oxford degree and a really good Documentary about the european theatre of WWII.

I personally find the desire to stuff my head into a toliet after watching anything with Gervais in it but I find a lot of his other work quite good.

Personally my funny bones' lie with Mitchell & Webb, Eddie Izzard, Russel Howard and Dara O'Brien.

i see from the comments on here that he is apparently the Dane cook of the UK good for a quick laugh but if you watch for too long you want to kill the guy so yeah be happy hes not younger.

Merh its funny, but it sounds exactly like a Christian comedian making jokes about atheists, which can be very funny too btw. But that's it, its not really offensive.

I'm not an American but I lived there for 5 years. Like most of the world, they find things humourous the same as others, with varying tastes per person obviously. The problem is penetration, not all tv shows / comedians etc that people find funny make it to other countries, and some pop cultural references may be lost as well.
P.S I realise this is a matter of opinion, but Eddie Izzard is a much better representation of british comedy than this guy

He was okay, not something to write home about. He wasn't bad, but not really good either.

If I were to critique his performance, I would say "drink less because you're obviously sloshed" and "make your movements count. Running around the stage like a chicken with your head cut off is just distracting and doesn't help the jokes".

Like I said, not terrible, not fantastic.

Hell, I laughed. It was damn funny if you ask me, I personally think there are some fine comedians out there that do not originate in the U.S.
