IT'S OVER 9000!!!
That is all.
I don't know anything else.
Except .. 'Nappa's Grand Day Out'? I think.

In America, DBZ hit its high in the late 90s. The 30 minute show spent 22 minutes on telling the back story, forshadowing future episodes, and commercials. It was frustrating to watch. After a while the characters became so powerful that the beings that could smash a planet, were battling on a planet with minor damage to the planet while trying to kill each other. Even the "evil" ones.

I got more from renting the rest of the DB world than the regular DBZ series that made it on Cartoon Network. You know, movies that had definate beggings and endings.

In the end on the DBZ series ALL, ALL IN CAPITALS bad guys ALL became good when a new bad guy showed up. (except maybe Cell)

While I appreciate the animation style, the story was just trite, repetative, formulamatic, and just plan sucked in the long run.

I found it to be boring, poorly animated and consisting of poor acting and episode arcs that seem to range over about twenty episodes of two guys talking about fighting and cross fading as oppsoed to actual motions and a lot of shouting.
I didn't like it very much, but that's just my opinion and I respect any would be fans of the series.

hypothetical fact said:
If you were young in the 90's you had to watch dbz or you would have nothing to talk about with your friends.
This indeed, and it was epic, losing out only to pokemon on the must-watch scale. How I wish I could be 7 again - just for a day.

Here's what you watched with your friends in the late 90s:

DBZ
Pokemon
Yu-Gi-Oh!/Gundam Wing

If you watched none of the above, I probably didn't know you. Growing up, that series was awesome. Now that I'm older, I'm watching Dragon Ball Kai, which is basically DBZ without all the bullshit and in a higher resolution (it cuts 300 episodes down to about 90). I feel the overall message of DBZ is surprising considering what the series entailed.

The manga is tons better. The anime had some unfortunate filler episodes, but that is truely NOTHING compared to Naruto or Bleach's anime's: multiple SEASONS back to back about nonsense

DBZ is awesome as a manga, and it is still worshipped in Japan today (almost 14 years after it ended).

I was 8 in 1998 so that gives me the right to like it.

The reason that the epidodes had so much padding was because The manga and The anime were being produced simultaniously (unlike most cases where the anime is made some time after the manga) this meant that they HAD to put the long power-ups and such in so that the story wouldnt overtake itself (and was the reason for the Garlic jr saga)

there is a series called Dragonball Kai which fixes all this, compressing almost 300 episodes into 100 and improving the animation and effects.
