our desire to discover the meaning is what gives us a purpose, if we ever found the truth, than our existence would be pointless, and we would fade away.

The Meaning of Life? What a confusing question, maybe there is no meaning to life. We could just project it so it gives us something to do, or a goal to work for. Even if there's no meaning to life, it's still fun to try and get to where you're going.

My goal, or definition of life, is to use it the best you can. To enjoy what you have before it's gone, and to make sure you never lose it. To make others lives better so they can enjoy it, and everyone can at least enjoy their time on Earth while they can. I don't believe in a Heaven or a Hell, just in making the world better for those who are, and will be here before they move on.

lol the minute I saw this thread I immediately was going to post "42" but then I read you had a rule against it
That is also the reason I clicked this thread.

Well it's nothing very special. Try be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.

For me the meaning of my life is to live a good life. To make my boyfriend/husband happy and to be happy myself. As long as I can be a good person to myself and those around me. It may sound sappy and pathetic to some. If I end up been a housewife while my boyfriend/husband works then so be it, as long as I can do it good enough to make our lives good.

Personally i believe there is no meaning of life, thats far too general when people are far too different, i believe we each have a different meaning to our lives.

For me? Its discover new things, find love and laugh.

Edit: I think everyone had to resist the urge to say 42.

I believe life is gloriously, beautifully without purpose and meaning.

I dislike the idea that everything is already planned and I dislike the idea that humans are important.

I asked my dad the other day (who is a quaker and had just prior to this said "god loves all people equally") why god does not love all life, nay, all matter, equally? It takes all the matter in existence to arrive at the point we are today; the universe is a lot bigger than we are and if there is some creative deity-entity watching it, it cares as much for that one oxygen molecule in a meter square of space as it does for you, I or the empty urine sample bottle next to me.

Life as we know it is simply another way matter has grouped together via the various processes of the universe, and holds no greater or lesser importance than planets, nebulae and brown dwarfs. To me, life on Earth just 'happened'. Humans may think, create fridges and run in circles in front of a crowd of thousands, but we are ultimately just matter that has congealed in a particularly fortuitous way for us. When we are dead the atoms will remain, and will remain for a fuck-load of time, entering into all sorts of adventures prime to be made into a summer blockbuster.

There is no more liberating thought than that which is 'this is all we have'. A fleeting blink in the eye of the universe, to be made into what you will. Some will waste their life in the machine, doing something because they have to. For me life is there to be enjoyed, and if I cannot enjoy it I endeavour to make it as pleasant for others as I can. I oft think of myself as a 'happy nihilist'. Nihilism is generally considered to be a highly pessimistic view sometimes characterized by wanton destruction. Which is all well and good, so long as you remember that destroying something is just as pointless as letting it be.

Mostly though, I don't give a shit what you think, so long as you let me be :)

Does there need to be a meaning of life? All life is, is a chemical accident, which will eventually extinguish itself and the universe would just keep revolving around itself.

Pretty much agree spot on with the OP. As an agnostic who actively disbelieves in sentient gods, afterlives, sin, and all that jazz, I've come to the conclusion that there is no point to life. Given enough time nothing that occurred during our lifetimes will matter. I anticipate the human race will become extinct at some point and really then, the only thing that matters about our being here is that we may contribute to fossil fuels someday. And does that really matter either?

But while you're here you might as well try to make yourself happy and be a good person.
