Fatal Frame 2 had it all. scary as fuck ghosts, extremely creepy and silent atmosphere and the feeling of being utterly alone. theres not a soul in miles... well there is, but not a living one...

ill never forget Halloween 07. if you read the first part of my post (which i suppose you did since your reading this now), then i think you can guess why.

The bottom of the well in ocarina of time. I have nightmares just remembering it.
i feel your pain.
It freaked me out the first time i went in there and the mini-boss........dont get me started.
Oh and then just because the Creators of the game like seeing you freak out they made the same mini-boss from the well a larger mini-boss in the Temple of Shadow...which was a scary place its self.

Sound and suspense are the key to scary gaming. It works pretty much the same as scary movies.

The use of sound in Dead Space is very effective, quiet whispers and sounds when you are walking down a deserted hallway and then loud disorientating music when you are attacked.

I mean, who are the scariest characters, what are creepiest locations, the most bone-chilling music, etc. ?
Also, which games tried hard to be scary but ultimately failed?

For me, the Shalebridge Cradle from Thief: Deadly Shadows was just... *shudder*. Wallmasters (Ocarina of Time), too - horrifying!
For me it would be pretty much everything in the suffering, not played it?

DO IT NOW!!!!!!!!!

any water-based level scares the crap out of me. examples are half-life with the ichytosauras things, or the water temples in zelda. Just plain scary.

I actually find ANY part where you're getting chased by something that has the potential to kill you instantly pretty tense, as long as it's accompanied by suitable music.
And there it is. Music can be the scariest bit to any game. Just playing the tune for the Shadow temple in OoT gets my heart racing and sends chills down my spine.

Thief 3. Shalebridge Cradle, huddling in a corner praying to god that the twitching monstrosity that's about two inches away from my face doesn't care to lean in a bit farther.

For me it was always the temple of time that got me. Oh so eerie.

The suspense that builds before something scares you, as well as disturbing settings and imagery that really creep you out when playing.

Eugh...that was weird

Oh, and the TV music off Persona 4...and the TV, come to that

and running out of ammo in the middle of a Horde on L4D...That does not feel right

Though my absaloute worst is being alone in some far-flung part of a TF2 map...and then you hear a Spy decloak somewhere...

a game i really want to see become scary again is resident evil, sice 4 came out, it kinda lost the brain eating zombies, mutant freaky zombies* case in, point the bander snatch from code veronica x * and brought in the mindless freaks, I mean, its a good game and plot and all, but who's really scaried of somthing stumbling after you at 3 feet per minute, unlike the zombies we all know and love, granted my speed point has gotten nowere, but i think somthing decomposing grabbing on to you and taking a chunk out of you is a little more scary thin a parisite busting out of your head, granted that is shocking, but not that scary.

srry, this is just a subject ive wondered about for awhile,oh and keep the camera angles from 4 and 5

Definitely! :) Also the Shadow Temple and Spirit Temple (i.e. wallmasters :p).

Another thing I remember is the ending of Monkey Island 2 when LeChuck chases you through the tunnels - oh god that was tense!
I actually find ANY part where you're getting chased by something that has the potential to kill you instantly pretty tense, as long as it's accompanied by suitable music.
An example which comes to mind is the otherwise not-too-scary game Dead Space. There are two scenes (three, if you include when you actually kill the damn thing) where you're chased by an invincible (because he regenerates, not because you can't damage him) enemy. In the first one, there is frantic music and frantic screaming from your support character, but the second is even worse: it's in a vacuum, so everything is completely silent.

Any way, there is one song which fills me with dread whenever I hear it: the music from The Path. The only video with it I could find was in the Escapist's very own review [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/5928-Review-The-Path] of the game. It goes from 0:08 to 0:23. It also plays over the end.

Dead Space was by far the scariest game I've ever played. The suspense of not knowing where an enemy would come from is scary in itself but what really got it for me was the background music. Every once in a while you'll hear people talking even though your all alone on the ship. I think the most spine chilling moment is when your on the elevator near the later part of the game. If you have your volume up high enough you can hear a woman singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Scary as shit!
I just learned to shoot first ask later. I missed half of the suspense building stuff because i was to focused on task at hand. STAYING ALIVE. But then when i replayed it on hard i noticed the stuff. and the lethality of the necromorphs.

The scariest part of games for me is the sudden flash of something and then it's gone. Like to holo guys in FEAR 2. Just the sudden movement will cause me to shoot and back away so i get a bit overwhelmed with lots of sudden ghost movements.

Or when your radar pings mutiple contacts closing fast but you can't see any of them.
