It's seriously fucked up isn't it?
Indeed it is, the fuzzy cameras, the eerie sound of a Slayer crawling along the walls, the deserted corridors and having that feeling "They were coming". The first time I played it (In a dark room), my heart was racing.
Have you played it with surround sound?

FUUUUUUUUUUUU
Alas, I have not. You know what? I will try and play it with surround sound at some point.
When i first heard the growl slayers make i about shat myself
Don't worry mate, we all shit ourselves when we heard that. lol
That and the bit when you go in the bathroom and you hallucinate all those slayers
Doesn't your kid pop up and say "Daddy..." on that part?
Yeah,he goes daddy then they appear

Atmosphere.

Loneliness.

That's one of the most terrifying things to me, when a game is so well done that it can give me the true sense of being alone.

Nothing more frightening than that.

That suspense in the dark while youre just waiting for something scary to happen like when you just know alma or something of the sort is right around the corner in F.E.A.R

hrm... I would say dieing is one, because many current games are super easy (I died twice in dead space on hard). But then again many gamers hate the idea of dieing, and games like bioshock where you can die with no consequence are still a bit scary. My guess is a game that can put the gamer in an unnerving atmosphere with a combination of sound, visuals, and an attachment to the world would make a game pretty scary. Games like silent hill (for lack of a better example) which make you feel engaged in the world, and that your charictor is not the very center of that universe are perfectly scary.

Something I find really freaky is swimming with enemies in the water. I had to sit back from the PC during Half Life when you had to go through sections with the little worms with teeth. Think that's a more personal thing for me specifically.

A lot of the scary moments for me are those "BLARGH" jump out and scare you moments.

For example, the oven man in RE4.

The quiet calm before the storm, the pure fear and anxiety you feel as you stumble about every corner expecting to see an other worldly demon and you find nothing, only to be assaulted from the other side, that is true fear, its to bad the only game I ever played tjat pulled it off was Silent Hill.

The only game that ever scared me was Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth and I still have no idea why.

Maybe it was the ambiance or that feeling that something was just around the corner...

And nothing was there. I mean, 'scary' movies do this all the time but never as effectively as this game did for me.

So, for this topic, I'd have to say Atmosphere and Ambiance. You could have the most f***ed up monsters but that doesn't guarantee scariness for me

I forgot about the wallmasters, those were creepy. ANd the Redead in OOT was creepy.

The Truth puzzles in AC2 are creepy. Just to think that they caused so many of the world events.

The element of Surprise....definitely. There is nothing as scary as the unexpected...

Even worse when you DO expect something to come out, the anticipation is crazy scary.

The death claw sanctuary in Fallout 3 is sooo god dam scary. Your stalking around a cramped dark space full of blood thirsty kill beasts that you can't hear and can barely see and you can never tell if there's one around the next corner or not. Runners up are the yao-goai caves and the dunwich building.
