I'm not new to the forum but I also have a question as, let's call it sensitive, as the OP's. I dislike farmville but I've only second hand impressions from it. Please note I'm not intending to troll, I genuinely don't know and would like to correct my second hand impressions. My question is, is there any gaming skill involved in farmville, or it's just a way to sink time and (if that's your kind of thing) have fun? In other words, is it possible that someone's new farm gets bigger than someone else's old farm without the use of RL money, that's what I would consider gaming skill in the case of this game?
Just some basic math, and some free time. nothing else.

Ah, Farmville. It would be so much less controversial if it were labeled as say, a brain-numbing medication instead of an actual game. "Yes, Nigel, for the pain, have some 120 milligrams lidogeckoblorghenfliggerine, and three weeks of Farmville for the stress."

That being said, I *like* Farmville. I like it in the way I like mind-numbing television after a hard day's work. I don't have to *think* about it, and it's mildly amusing in that it feeds my inner achievement hog with all those quaint little awards you can earn.

It's also got something to do with the effortlessness with which I can harvest an entire patch of potatoes - anyone who has ever worked an ACTUAL farm will tell you that something like that would take a couple of days. It's something akin to a cheat code for life, where you can feel the achievement and nostalgia without actually doing any work.

Do I play it on a regular basis? Ha ha ha. No. But sometimes it's all right.

get out. NOW

never played it, but it actually looks kinda boring. you probably will get lot's of hate in this thread, but I think you may have brought it on yourself.
i dont mind people hating me. better they hate me for what i am than love me for what i am not.
Even though i dislike farmville, at least you're using the forums. most of the ass jockeys sent over here from zynga make an account, vote for that stupid contest, then leave.
i use the forums , as i use fb - as long as it is fun, why not play?

my other quote: life is a childs game. to win, you must be willing to play

ETA:
it is possible though, that people who do not like standing controvery - as much do i - would care to join the forums, were they not greeted by despise, simply for liking a slightly different pass time game in their computers than the majority of this sites people.

just saying

Well it really just depends on how you look at it. I don't know so much about skill involved. I play any FPS on the hardest difficulty first off, and beat them quickly. I'm not bragging. I just use the tools in the game and beat it. It just takes thought. So, does farmville require thought? Yes. You can just plant stuff and have a who gives a shit attitude about it. But if you do that your friends are going to be higher level than you, have a more impressive collection of items and most likely have more or better what you have. It's an economy game really. You can be brainless and just plant "X" because you like "X" or you can look at the numbers, find the best return for your time involvement. It really can become a juggling act too, especially if you're trying for the highest level (I think 70 at this point). Because you can plant whatever, but you've got to be around to harvest it that's what matters.

That's why I say it can be casual and or not so casual. You can be at a point where you plan your day around your crops or you can just once every 3-4 days plant again. You can be as hardcore as you want. Handle your farm strictly for XP, strictly for gold, or strictly for design and have really no goal. That's what you do in alot of games. Dex build? same thing.

Also I've never spent a dime on Farmville and never plan to, but I've got the second largest farm in the game. Not enough friends for the largest.
Thanks, that was the kind of info I was looking for with all the (anti-)zynga hype around lately, but was wondering how to ask without coming off as a troll. I still have my RL reasons to dislike it, but at least feel I less ignorant about it now :p

I played it for a while because my mates wanted me to join. I played for a while then got incredibly bored. The only reason i saved up enough coin was to do this! -
That was very cool, thanks for sharing it :D

If I wanted to farm, I'll just go outside and actually farm.

It's boring, scam-filled and monotonous. It's not really a game is it? If you want to farm, go and get a job at a farm. I much prefer the management of a whole town. I'd like to see Farmville players playing a game of "Zeus: Master of Olympus" and be given something more than just a farm (yes, there are farms in Zeus, for all you diehard farmers). Honestly, can someone who plays Farmville give Zeus a try and tell me what they thought of it.
Or they could play Age of Mythology.

What? There are farms in that too. And gigantic Ragnarok beasts. So, basically, a win-win situation.

Nothing. I absolutely hate the "game". I hate getting invites for the "game" when all my friends know full well I don't give a toss about their crops. I hate it so much, I blocked the app.

If I want to spend time on a computer, I'll either be here or playing DDO. And if not at either of those places, I'll be on Youtube watching clips of Scrubs when they still had JD.

NOTE: This is my opinion.

LOL. Totally, right! If I wanted to kill some people I'd just go outside and do it!

I'll be completely honest with you, I don't ever want to see a real persons body parts flying off. I don't want to see all that blood for real. I promise you I would puke until I died. That's sick man.

But it's not sick in video game land. Just like growing crops and working in a chicken coop are not something I want to do. It's ok in video game land.

I like how it makes me look less retarded for playing Sushi cat...
I had to find out what that was, it sounded awesome.
Whilst it's no Peggle, I'm happier for playing it.

I've never played it, nor have I any intention of doing so, so I can't really comment.
I only have a mild dislike of it because of the neverending spam it causes. But that's just an aside.

I do however have a question. Back in the day, I played a bit of SimFarm. It was monotonous and pretty easy, but mildly entertaining in a brain numbing way. Is FarmVille anything like it?

And if it is, why not play SimFarm? That way you minimize spam. :p

Never played it myself, but one thing that I can't help thinking about is, why the hell is this browser game so popular, when the Harvest Moon series of farming games, which are fairly polished and rather fun games, never really caught on. It boggles the mind.

I didn't know farming is just as bad as mutilating people.

@teh_gunslinger - Couldn't honestly tell you. There's a few farm games on facebook. Another one I've played is farmtown. But, gotta give props to Zynga here in that farmtown just couldn't keep up with content updates and improvements to the ui.

EDIT:

@Scde2 - You're absolutely right. But the point was that we don't play video games based on real world desires.

Zeus is more of a city maintenance game, though. Plus you get [HEADING=3]GODS WALKING AROUND YOUR CITY.[/HEADING]

Well, I've never played Zeus, so I wouldn't know. But what I do know is that Age of Mythology is probably the best RTS on the PC, because you can have
[HEADING=3]CANADIAN LASER BEARS FIGHTING GIANT HELL DRAGONS.[/HEADING]

Enemy army invades on Zeus, you send Ares and his elite squad to deal with them.

Also Farmville let's you get Mafiawars tractors, seeders, and harvesters. Kind of like Bioware letting you have DA:O armor in ME2 if you have both.
