Street fighter-Its hard for a little kid to play at first.
Your 100% right about the difficulty but what do want less of in the game?

How about an easier fighting mechanic for beginers. Tutsunoko vs capcom fixed that.

I think games need less cowbell.

Seriously though, I think we need less war sims. I'm not sure the morbid fascination everyone has with a war that resulted in the genocide of 12 million people by a single country alone, but is this really the kind of thing we want to glorify?
I think it's more the morbid fascination with guns. Kids love them (theirs a lot of those) and war is just a common topic that seems like a good reason to use them. It's basically a selling point that keeps working, and in the new times where most mainstream developers just make everything for money as the soul purpose, we're not going to see any changes any time soon.

I vote for less stereotypes as well. And somewhat related to that, less of the same-ish character over and over again. While each character may have a different background and motive, on the surface they kindda look the same. Something totally off-the-wall, or even just a bit creative would be nice.

Less 30 minute openers, if I'm not playing within 5 minutes from the start menu I find that annoying.

I have to agree with less cliches, although you retracted that. Starcraft II's campaign is making me want to hurt somebody.

Any game including the phrases:
"We gotta finish the fight"
"It's all up to us now"
"What are yeh gonna do?" "What I do best... Cause trouble"

Or any other variations of these overused lines should get better writers. Really, there's so many creative people around. How the hell did Blizzard overlook this in making Starcraft II? Everything else is pretty polished, albeit stupid-simple. It's like making a super-expensive chocolate cake and then using Hershey chocolate for the icing.

Half-assed single player games and less seriousness... I was playing NecroVision yesterday and was reminded of house games used to be... Bosses with health bars, picking up any weapon you came across and keeping it with you instead of only carrying 2-3 weapons at a time, missions actually taking longer than 5 minutes, oh, and the pure awesomeness of dual wielding two gigantic machine guns...

Fanboys.

Or possibly mute Protagonists, I know we're supposed to project ourselves onto the character and whatnot, but I find that difficult since I'm not a near invincible killing machine like my character is.

Less seriousness and less realism. I didn't like Prototype for the realistic depiction of everything, I liked it because I could leap 200 feet in the air and morph large masses of flesh and brutality out of nothing.

Whoa! Just like that, hey? I some what agree but I think first person shooters are the most popular genre out of all. Aren't they?

I hope your over-exaggerating there because I would be impressed a 30min cinematic.

Wait, you mean there are still games today that don't let you skip through cinematics?

I didn't exactly retract it, I just felt because I'm the OP that I have to do some big to kick of the thread properly.

Also, I was thinking Starcraft 2 when I wrote that as well. Almost every fucking line is a clich'e! It's unbelievable coming from Blizzard, maybe the spent all the money of the improving the graphics?

RPGs with any grinding at all. Speaking of which, RPGs which lack in non-magic combat. I'd like sword-based combat to involve more than watching my character automatically swing every few seconds. Sure, you can mess around with spells as a mage, but I'd like it to not be the only way to have fun during a fight.

I could go on about cookie-cutter FPS games following the format of one or two games that set the standard, but that's already been stated.

Multiplayer and co-op. Those are things that should only be like sprinkles on the already glorious frosted birthday cake that is the story mode. Making multiplayer the main focus is usually like making said cake out of nothing but sprinkles, which would taste disgusting.

Also health regeneration and limited arsenals. Granted they worked fine in CoD 4, but not every FPS has to do them. I much prefer Half-Life's 400 pound collection of BFGs and arbitrary health counter over this pseudo-realism any day.

Try Final Fantasy XII, it's like 30 mins of cutscene, some video, some rendered in game. You dont get control of a character until like 40 minutes in. In a game where story is central to the gameplay experience you dont skip the intros.

Less of

Woman + as few clothes as they can = more health/armour/whatever.

I mean really, There are WAY too many games that just put girl chars in bra and panties and then have them killing endless swarms of whatever.
