What do you think of The Escapist community as a whole?

I like it here, it's like a favorite pub filled with familiar faces.

Though to be honest I do miss the days when I first joined. Had some really crazy people back then who pretty much ran the forums, but in a good way, with discussion about topics nobody could see coming and really good humor. We have some users who seem to fit the shoes they left behind but it is like comparing Mountain Dew to Diet Dew. It does taste similar and some people do prefer diet Dew but every sip you take just makes you realize how much you miss the original.

In any case it's a good place. Trolls are minimal, discussion is good, and it has an extremely wide userbase with a ton of variety in interests and ideas.

The community here is mostly good, with the main attribute being that there's a good variety here. Granted, variety occasionally brings elitism and complainers, but those people don't infest the entirety of the forums.

In general?
Neutral. My first impression of this site was that everyone was sophisticated, mostly polite and all that jazz.
But then I realized that it's likely a facade brought about by the strict set of rules. If you want to get banned, you insult somebody directly. If you want to cheat the system, you argue with a person to the point where they post something that you can report them for. It's a typographic game of chicken, where the person who baits the other into saying something nasty and directed towards them wins.

Maybe that's me assuming the worst, but that's what I can observe from time to time in heated discussions.
There also appears to be a lot of elitist thinkers out there who will try to argue about anything. To say that "they are right" on issues where there aren't any rights or wrongs. Rather than saying "we disagree, but it was interesting to see someone else's view" they will continue to respond with the delusion that the subject is of black/white and they are correct. It's something that I haven't really seen anywhere else, because in those cases it devolves into direct insults and the "combatants" buggering off without any further interaction.

The coverage the site does is also kind of wonky. Borderline unprofessional at times, and chock-full of opinions rather than slapping the facts down. I'd say something about the features as well, but those are really subjective things more often than not so I'll with-hold my sentiments on that matter.

At this point you may be thinking that this bloke hates this place.
Nope, it's alright. Can definitely improve in a bunch of aspects but it's quite swell when put in comparison to a decent amount of different locations on the net. I'd imagine that the average regular here is smarter than those of elsewhere. It's often quite enjoyable to read and reply to the thoughts of others, but not all the time.

That's a really interesting perspective, actually. I agree that on a lot of topics (which shall remain nameless) there is a barely contained rage combined with emotional immaturity that bubbles over more than it should. Though I think that when one expects civil conversation over topics that are, more or less, emotional honey pots, that person may be asking too much.

Most of us are not trained debaters, and even those still need a moderator to keep the peace when in a physical setting. This is one of the few places that can actually have some interesting debates that *don't* just become a flame-war right off the bat, due to the community rules.

Overall, I like it. It's a hell of a lot better than most places.

I think it's a primarily male community that is overly sexist, racist and homophobic. Many of them have little clue as to how the world really is. Or how women really are for that matter. Or how anything really is for that matter.

It's a male dominated sphere. With male dominated opinions and bias on everything. A differing opinion in any way, shape or form on the site is typically attacked ruthlessly and for little reason other than it being a differing opinion.

As a female poster here and a survivor of sexual assault, I have been harassed, have had numerous rape jokes sent to me personally, been victim and slut shamed, told I am looking to be offended, called a Feminazi for simply being a woman and more.

I don't really enjoy this forum. I basically just come to remind myself how backwards some people really are.

You should forward those messages to the mods. Such behavior is unacceptable, deplorable and against forum rules.
Probably doesn't mean much but I'm sorry you're being harassed.

Personally, It's one of my favorite communities on these here interwebz...but yeah, it has its problems.

I mean theres always gonna be the odd troll (that, thankfully, the mods usually get), but when the enitre site is just fixating over Sexism, Anita Sarkeesian, Take Back Mass Effect or how console gamers are destroying gaming....it gets annoying. The mods can be a bit....overzealous once in a while too. [small]please dont ban me[/small]

Overall though, I like it alot. When theres not the pseudo-intellectual attitude toward gaming (Which, I will admit, I am a part of) being thrown about, its a fun time with some great people on forums that really require you to think before you post.

It's generally a helpful and courteous community too, and defiantly passionately opinionated, which I count to be 80% a good thing and about 20% sometimes a bit of a bad-thing lol.

You know it is one of the better experiences I have had it is in many ways the total reverse of Yahoo! answers. Here almost everyone is here for honest conversation ans there are very few trolls and when trolls do hit they are generally just shut down also people do not make guaranteed claims on something that they actually do not have even the most basic grasp of.

It is a wonderful site filled with wonderful people! Even with all the arguing, it just makes the site more interesting!

I mostly post in User Groups and the Forum Games but I often come to the forums to see the latest topics and contribute! This place is also where I get all my gaming (and odd) news.

I think I have friends here than I have in town!

Can't be drunk, on holiday in Florida and the legal drinking age is 21 (woe is me, 19 year old Irish with no alcohol)

Hey don't laugh! It sucks that my parents can drink while I am there drinking Dr Pepper without vodka (although refills are free in TGI Fridays so that is something)
