What do you usually get at chinese restaurants?

Sweet and sour chicken or combination fried rice, some times both cause I tend to not eat for two days at a time so when I do I eat a fair bit ^_^ but yeah that's my personal preference, I haven't found a good Chinese place in my area yet though it makes me sad T_T

Either that or Chicken in Black Bean Sauce or House Special Chow Mein. I absolutely adore noodles in these sauces, they're just delicious.

Swap the gravy for curry sauce and you have the ultimate food of the drunk. At least one good suede jacket of mine has been utterly ruined by attempting to walk and eat this while utterly pissed.

For "proper" chinese food though, I'm partial to anything with duck. Duck chow mien is a particular favourite of mine.

I'm also a seafood fan, so anything with king prawn is good with me.

My girlfriend's favourite is Kung Po Chicken, which I had never tried until I met her. It's fucking awesome.

Finally, I can't order a chinese without Spring Roll. My local chinese does 2 fair sized ones as a portion, although my old local did just a single one but it was fucking HUGE. As a last resort on the last few days before payday when there's fuck all money left but I wanted a chinese, one of these plus a fried rice was an acceptable "poor man's choice".

It might be a Scottish thing. Not many carry outs do gravy up in my neck of the woods. And remember one thing before expressing any shock at what a Scotsman will eat: we are the nation that invented the deep fried pizza. Yes, we take what is basically 95% dough (the most absorbent foodstuff known to man), and chuck it in a deep fat fryer. But, honestly, I rarely go to Chinese restaurants. Vietnamese is where it's at. I'll usually have chicken sate pho or a chicken vermicelli bowl. Japanese is also great. Love my ramen and udon.

Mapo doufu or doufu niu if they have it. Sichuan style food is my favorite, I love spicy stuff. Beef noodle soup with wontons, if it's a Taiwanese restaurant.

The Chinese restaurants I grew up with in PA have none of these things, just the most generic Americanized dishes since the Asian population is nearly non-existent where I'm from. Chinese restaurants are one of the only things I actually prefer about Dallas.

Also common to get lemon chicken, chicken+shrimp chow mein, fried chicken w/peanut butter, general tao, crispy sesame beef, honey mustard shrimp.

Yeah... I was going to comment about all the mentions of 'General Tso's' chicken... which isn't really Chinese (purported to be Hunanese, but they don't really eat poultry in Hunan and if it doesn't burn your insides, Hunanese people will deny it has anything to do with them), and has virtually nothing to do with Zuo Zongtang... it's just a perpetuated myth that he liked chicken prepared that way (there's no proof either way).

If you're big on Chinese seafood, try Zhejiang/Jiangsu traditional dishes.
