Everyone listen up. This is important. Turning 18, or whatever the age is where you're from, means nothing. The magic age of adulthood is... 24. When I turned 24, I truly felt like an adult. This is when I gave up hoodies and started taking my financial future into my own hands. I've talked with other people, and they too felt that 24 is the actual age when you become an adult.
I can agree with that, it's when I cut my hair and got a real job, not kidding, I haven't grown my hair out in over a year because I'd feel too strange in my curly mop with a suit.

Becoming an adult in Australia is separated into 2 stages - when a person turns 16 he or she is legally an adult - held accountable for his or her crimes as an adult, responsible for his or her own welfare, etc, etc. However, they still can't drink without parental supervision and they can't drive fully or vote. Those privledges come when you turn 18.

Becoming an adult didn't do that much for me, because I am an incredibly socially inept, repressed, introvert who started to act like an adult when I was 12. In fact, I was incredibly unpopular at the very few parties I attended because I was always gabbing off about how irresponsible my peers were and reminding everyone too much of their dad, what with my complaining and talk of social justice and politics.

The only good thing about being an adult is this - I am not expected to interact with children. Thank goodness. I do not have to talk to teenagers, and they generally avoid or ignore me. This is great - because I hate most teenagers and children.

For me, being a teenager was knowing more then my parents.
As I get older, it's now realizing I was an idiot and my parents knew what they were talking about all along.

So becoming an adult did make me feel different, but it just happens over time.
I think it's called maturity...but I shudder at that thought.
I still love LEGO for Pete's sake! My wife isn't as enthusiastic about it, but she'll come around.

It means being mature and responsible.
I'm 18 (old enough to legally vote, smoke, drink alcohol, have sex, get married and drive in Britain) but I'm just as mature and have the same sense of humour I had when I was 15/16 so I've not become an adult as such. As a student, I'm just too busy to think all grown up at the moment.

Ah well I guess it could always be worse..

..For instance being 26 years old and still living with your parents, like a colleague from work.
*Sigh* Unfortunately, it seems to be harder an harder to get your own house when you are young these days. Apparantly, it is expected that soon enough, the average person will be well into their thirties before being fully independant. Cause unless you get a really well paying job as soon as you leave uni/college/school it takes a long while to build up enough funds. That'll be me then *sobs*.
Sadly it's getting harder. With the credit crunch lenders are going to require that you have 20% of your down payment. Even if you have that there's no guarantee that they'll give you the loan. I was fortunate enough to get in before the crunch, but man I wish you the best of luck

It means getting a job so that you have money to buy all the video games you couldn't have as a kid, and then not having the time to play them because you're too busy working.

When you start wishing you were back at school. Yes kiddies, adulthood is that shit.
Don't listen to this guy. I stopped attending school at 14, moved out of my dad's home into a homeless shelter at 16, into my own home just before 17 and it's been the best time of my life. In exchange for more complete freedom than you've yet experienced, you fill in a few forms every now and then.

That's the thing about being a legal adult. There are plenty of my so-called "peers" with the mentality of children. That's why they're still in the homeless hostel and I was shifted out of it faster than any previous resident there.

Adult means same shit, different day. The world has not changed so much, only your part in it. What that part is? Well that depends on what you intend to do. Think about philosophy, not necessarily finding one and sticking to it, but finding as many as you can and being aware of them, whether they have names or not, these are the ideas - the people, who surround you.

Your power, which is greater than you will know when you are younger, must be curbed to fit within the cohesive structures of law and order, to allow tribes - the size of which we cannot individually grasp - to function (well?). 18 is an arbitrary marker, it does not mean you suddenly cease to be a child, just "Surely they should have gotten the hang of things by now."

You know what a decade feels like - it's been neatly segmented for you. Whether it feels like everything or nothing, you have more of them to experience. Keep them in mind and wonder what you might feel like doing with them, John Lennon said; "Whatever gets you through the night, it's alright."

I hope that helps. :)
