A real Schindlerjuden? That's very cool.

Steven Speilberg's cinematic portrayal of him with Liam Neeson delivered a line that will haunt my morality for the remainder of my life;
"I could have gotten one more".
Among the things in my List-of-Things-to-Do-Before-I-Die (aka Bucket List), I added "Personally Save a Life", seeing as the mark above it reads "Go Skydiving"

The world learned pretty much nothing from the holocaust. We did diddly-shit to stop genocides that we knew were happening in Rwanda and Darfur, and the same thing looks set to happen again in southern Sudan.
And for all we know, North Korea too.
It's all about the love, man- or lack thereof.

To me, it means that humanity can and will sink to horrific lows in the name of scapegoating and desperation.

The original reason why we hate Nazis
The far left was actually in favour of fascism for awhile. Then the world found out about the holocaust, and that stopped like a car hitting a very thick brick wall. A very thick one indeed.

OT: I could write a small speech regarding what the holocaust says about humanity, the moral repurcussions and the suffering, but basically there's nothing to be said about that which has not been said hundreds of thousands of times before.

Looking at it from the perspective of the second world war, it shows just how idiotic the Nazi leadership was. First of all, the amount of jews in the military, which were of course taken the hell out of there, meant that they were able to shrink their own armed forces without having to screw up in actual combat. Second, they managed to gather up a rather large "workforce" to support the war effort, then they decided to start gassing them en masse. Throughout most of the war, Germany had hugely stunted industrial capabilities. To pull the holocaust off, SS combat personnel and mainline military infrastructure had to be diverted. It's also worth noting that the "final solution" was started fully in 1942. So in other words, the Nazis, while in a state of total war against enemies on all sides, all of whom hated them and wanted any reason to punish the hell out of them once the war was done, diverted transportation and military infrastructure, personnel and resources in an effort to annihilate an ethnic group they'd been using as a "workforce". This was when the outcome of the war was somewhat in question. Not only was it the perfect way to cross the moral line irredeemably, they managed to stunt their ability to fight a World War without having to lose any big battles. Stalingrad wasn't over yet, D-Day wouldn't happen until '44 and I'm fairly certain the Afrika Korps was still doing ok. Yet they still managed to nerf themselves. Sometimes the past is retarded in every direction.

Like the Salem witch trials, numerous massacres before hand, and much more... it's just an evil deed done by mankind.

the following sense of obligation to impose Team America World Police, babysitting everyone but ourselves while we slowly slip into just as shitty a situation as everyone else.
Yes, it's fucked up. But this is the biggest reason apathy grows around it all. It's hard to get involved when being too reliant on a military force stretched across the world from every past conflict and too conditioned by "economics" to the point it's nigh impossible to think like a human, and being constantly reminded of this via the media.

We all want it to stop but what do we as individuals do about it? What measures do we take to ensure that "never again"?

To me, the Holocaust is just one of hundreds of major events through history that should serve to remind us that great tragedies are a predictable result when mass delusion is allowed to run rampant. Despite how heavily it has influenced our culture's views on genocide, the Holocaust is not the biggest loss of human life brought about by tyranny, nor the most recent, not by far.

Snap! And to top it off all the leaders of those countries were atheists Mr. randvek so don't go blaming this all on Christianity.
While Communist leaders were atheists, I don't think that necessarily means anything. Hitler's beliefs were a bizarre mix of the Occult, Christianity, and Norse mythology, but I don't think anybody can reasonable argue that any one of those had anything to do with the Holocaust.
Exactly.

Religion had nothing to do with it. It all comes down to human stupidity and corruption, and a lust for power. Such people may use religion as a tool to achieve their ends, and yet there are many "enlightened" people saying that Hitler was a Christian as if that actually mattered. Whether he actually was a Christian or not is debatable, however. But it is ultimately irrelevant when it comes to the Holocaust.

Humans are fickle beings, prone to their own self-destructive tendencies.

It is important to remember that there have been other horrible events throughout history. For that reason, the Holocaust means nothing to me. I'm quite cynical these days.

one of the worst things that happened in the last millenium, not the holocaust but the whole war. What I noticited when visiting one of the camps (terezin, czech republic) was the atmosphere there, very dark and quiet.
Which is something I did not notice in the Durchgangslager close to where I live.

remember and learn I guess... but that never worked in the past

A harsh warning as to the devastating affects of war and prejudice. I feel that since the holocaust we really have come a long way towards achieving peace and acceptance.

Snarky answer: It means it gets lonely on Vvardenfell after the holocaust I perpetrated in Morrowind.

Serious answer: It is eminently interesting, and it colors modern politics---I suspect that Israel has a permanent Get Out Of Jail Free Card because they have a handy-dandy means to denounce anyone who calls them out on their treatment of Palestinians or stuff like building settlements in East Jerusalem in contravention of treaty. Anyone who dares do so is branded an anti-Semite or a terrorist and from there it is a very short trip to Godwin being invoked and the Holocaust mentioned (no thanks to Ahmadinejad who outright denies the Holocaust happened.)

First, glad you mentioned Unit 731--not enough people know about that or Nanking. They should really make a movie about the people who tried to help the Chinese during WW2, including a Nazi party member.
I lost family in the Holocaust, distant Polish relatives, who may have been killed for hiding Jewish families (word of mouth, not sure what happened). Also, lost a great uncle at Pearl Harbor.
Any horrible tragedies like this make me very sad, but also very angry at the people and countries that did/do these things. I know it doesn't make sense to, for example, dislike Japan because of the atrocities their soldiers committed in the past, but I still feel like they need to do a huge WE ARE SO SORRY to China, Russia, the US and others.

The "holocaust" to me is jewish perpetrated myth, so that they can behave like monsters without being criticized. If anyone points how disgusting they are for bombing international schools and hospitals with white phosphorus, they simply cry back that you are a anti-Semite, nazi etc etc. Not to mention that it has become a great money making industry.

It also greatly disturbs me that a historic event such as this, it has become illegal to reexamine the evidence to get a better picture of what actually took place. There are many strong arguments that the number of hews who died is much lower than the 6 million claimed, such as the fact that if that many jews did die, it would take a impossible birth rate for the number jews post WW2 to be true. When reparations and suing German companies came about, millions of jew just magically reappeared.
when people call you an anti semite there right!
SIx million people died in the holocaust, not all jews but a large majority.
A jew is not an israeli or more correctly the israeli government and your anti semitic for thinking that they are.
you don't what your talking about.

I don't really think about it all that much.

I think the holocaust was a horrible thing that happened. I also think that If something similar happens again that the world would need to stop it right away.

Thanks for proving my point, call the jews out on anything, the reply is not a rebuff to your concerns but the cry of "you are a anti semite"

I would say I have legitimate view point, based on facts, rather than being brainwashed by the zionist jew holocaust machine.

Its ironic that jews have treated a different race of people worse the the nazi's treated them, for 50+ years.

It shows that when a guy with half a moustache applies to an art college, let him in!! Art is harmless. Military dictatorship, however, is a a sorry alternative.

Im gonna go with Bill Hicks on this one:

"Hitler had the right idea, he was just and underachiever."

I mean, why stop with the jewish people? There's an entire planet in desperate need of cleansing of human life. Seems kind of nitpicky to me to just go after one single group of people...
