Final Fantasy. There's just no contest at all. Sure, Call of Duty may be copy paste, but that's what the fanboys love. Squeenix, on the other hand, has decided to kick their fans in the collective balls repeatedly ever since Final Fantasy X.

No, really..../thread right there. I know of no other franchise which has degraded so much over the course of 10 years. What a shame.

EA Sports - personally I've never been a big sports game player, mostly none really. But I am surprised no one has touched this franchise yet. EA sports holds a stranglehold monopoly on the sports game industry (Which is also Illegal as the monopoly violates anti-trust laws.) Only one sports game (A football game I cannot remember the name of) has ever been released outside of EA. All they do is rehash the same game with slightly better graphics and no new innovation, I honestly feel it stagnates more than Sonic could ever dream of.
First of all, welcome to the Escapist. Whenever March Mayhem isn't happening, this is a great community.

Second, while I hate EA Sports as much as the next guy (BTW, it's a developer, not a franchise), I need to correct you on something here. Monopolies do not inherently violate anti-trust laws. Nor do exclusive deals. It's a common misconception.

infinity ward, treyarch, activision and any other company stupid enough to think call of duty can still be saved better kill themselves via carbon monoxide fumes because it will be far less painful than what the CoD fags will do to them if you cant prestige past infinity more than once!

Uhm, Sonic the Hedgehog anyone? However. Both Colors and 4 are awesome, so, bit of a comeback.
I'm not saying that the latest Sonic games are any good, but surly after Sonic Adventure on the dreamcast the games have been on the up...

I would say in general all franchise are on the downhill, but thats because if you make one good game, you ill forever be chasing an unobtainable goal trying to live up to other standards.

It's a bit like heroin

Command and Conquer.
Let's open a club. Tiberium Twilight? What the hell EA? Did you really think we wanted an RTS that consisted of just spawning infinite, free units at each other until one gets bored?
Okay, granted they wanted to try something new, but then why change EVERYTHING about it. I mean I wasn't happy when Anton Slavic, the successor to Kane and General of the Black Hand, was just killed off-screen like a nobody and Commander McNeil doesn't even get mentioned in the GDI campaign as far as I can remember.

It felt like an insult to call that the last game to one of the greatest RTS series in the gaming world, one that with the spiritual predecessor DUNE basically created the entire genre. Then they forced Tiberian Sun out the studio too early so it was poorly received (Firestorm is my favourite game in the series though, for good reason) and not only change the music that made it so amazing but also the dark and gloomy setting that set it apart from other games into a standard scenario of good guys vs bad guys. It would have been nice if they at least cared enough to go into more detail than just a semi-hidden collectible data file to explain how a world about to be choked by Tiberium suddenly turns into 60% habitable land with open seas again.
Hmm...at least I had some really fun times with C&C Generals. Best spinoff I can think of.
Obviously my vote goes to C&C as well.
I wonder what the new AAA title they produce will be like, after they basically fired everyone who once worked for Westwood and killed the franchise I mean.

Well i'd have to say Call of Duty, though i shouldn't have expected better after a completely perfect game like Call of Duty 4 was produced, its slowly but surely gotten worse from there.

For me, it would be Final Fantasy. Which is sad, considering how much I love FF.

It seems to want to focus on Graphics over story and gameplay.

Well yes, I know EA sports is a subsidiary of EA, but am I wrong about a monopoly violating anti-trust laws? I thought that the entire point of anti-trust laws was to stop monopoly's from occurring. However if I am wrong would you please correct me? I do prefer to have my information straight.

I would have to say that the resident evil series is starting to loose the plot as fun as resident evil 5 was it just wasnt scary the horror aspect was so dull just lost the resident evil charm and the new upcoming title doesnt seem like its gonna be really going down the pant crapping route more like the bullet to the brain route i hope it proves me wrong but i really doubt it.

90% or more of All sequalized and continued games. MMO included. Add the number 2, 3 , 4 etc and regurgitate seems to be the status quo these days with most PUBLISHERS and Gaming developers .

I'm gonna piss a lot of fanboys/girls off here and say Mario.

Frankly, I've dislike Mario as a franchise from the very beginning, and that's not just because I was a SEGA-kid. I must admit I do like the old games (up to Super Mario World, and MAYBE '64), but the later games, and especially the newer ones just seem to have become a parody of itself. I've noticed that the series has added nearly nothing to itself as it's progressed. The last 3 major releases in the series have been nothing but the same, tired old money-spinning exercises by Nintendo, shamelessly flogging the poor plumber's skeletal corpse; Galaxy 2 is a rehashing of Galaxy 1 (obviously), *New* Super Mario Bros. Wii (by far the most preposterous and pompous game title I've ever heard) was just a multiplayer remake of the first Mario, and Galaxy 1 was just Sunshine with an extremely slight graphical improvement.

That being said, Sonic hasn't fared too well either. Ever since Adventure it's really slipped in terms of quality, though at least they've tried new things regardless of whether or not they turned out well for them.

Other than those glaring examples of VG franchises not ageing well, I'd say GTA really took a step down the ladder with GTA IV, and I couldn't help but get the feeling Rockstar were reluctant to announce GTA 5.

Rayman really slipped off the radar, but that's only because Ubisoft bizarrely decided to stop making Rayman games with Rayman in them (fingers crossed that Origins is good). Crash still has some life left in him, though not as much as he used to. I haven't played Spyro since the PS1 era, so I can't really comment on that. And finally I think the Tony Hawk games are on their last legs.

The point of anti-trust laws is to prevent monopolies from occurring or being maintained by anti-competitive practices (e.g. price-fixing). However, having a natural monopoly by virtue of releasing a superior product or by making better business decisions is perfectly legal.

Age of Empires

Star Wars

Command & Conquer

Forza

Lara Croft

Kane & Lynch

Most of these I'm sad for mentioning as I actually had high hopes for them and liked the original concepts of them.
