There is no one game I think everyone should have played I think it is more of everyone should try a little of everything. From the Classics through the latest and greatest and all the different Genres. I think the biggest problems with alot of gamers are very close minded when it comes to trying something different.
Some of my personal favourites that have left lasting fond memories
Space Quest
Monkey Island
Kings Quest
Ar Tonelico
Valkyria Chronicles
Resistance
Uncharted
Need For Speed
GT5
Fight Night
Silent Hill
Mario
Star Tropics
Street Fighter
I could go on and on.

Any Shin Megami Tensei or Persona game, (if you can find them! XD).

Then again, I am a huge fan of traditional RPG's, and monster breeders, (Dragon Quest Monsters, and Final Fantasy IX and VI are my three favourite RPG's of all time! <3).

Why is everyone talking about Prehistoric games? My first game console was the PS2, am I the only one in the present?
Probably because some of us are older than 14? I started with teh NES and have many fond memories of that console. Most games don't hold up too well anymore but a few does and a game for a system over 20 years old that is still actually good deserves mention in a thread like this. Appreciate the legacy of your hobby :)
Some age quite well, though and I love them.

"Have some Lufia Cabarnet with your meal, dear sir, It's quite worth the money."

Alot of NES games, really. I still have an old system in working condition. It's nice to have when I want to get back to the old stuff. Crystallis, as well.
Don't get me wrong, I love Duke Nukem. But for everyone's favourite game to be a game with pixels the size of cheeseburgers and gameplay as old as my great grandmother astonishes me. Do you guys like none of the newer games? Seriously, your favourites can be bested. This is not a religion, guys. You don't have to choose classics.

Everyone must play either Killer7 or ICO, and I'm leaning towards Killer7. To show that gaming can be art and can have complicated storylines.

Medievil on PS1, greatest game ever. Its the closest thing to a Tim Burton produced game you will find.

<-------I might be very bias though.

Everyone must buy and play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from start to finish in all three modes, especially multiplayer. It's cliched, I know, but its a great game.
This is what is destroying gaming.
Actually, great games like this are what make it an industry. To say you should only play the classics is to say war should be fought with sticks and stones because they were the first weapons. Industry evolves, in every medium. Just learn to accept the new and improved games of today. Not Zelda, cuz Link's gay.
what. the. fuck.
if you knew the series like I do from 01 on the PC, having cleared all the single-player components of the whole series and spent many hours in MP aswell, then you'd know that MW2 is a PoS, a symbol of all that is WRONG with the industry. popular =/= good.
besides, i've seen plenty of vids of MP on the tube (so?) and many of them know and state that the MP is still broken, and i can see it conceptually, as it appears to be better subtitled "laptop warfare" or "dual antique shotguns"

back to the topic, and positive words:
I'd recommend a lot of people play TIE fighter, myself, a great game of a genre that was once vibrant, but nowadays is really not well-played/no AAA titles in it in the foreseeable future..
also, BF2, also known as the real man's CoD4, which is the man-child's MW2, which as is the Antichrist of gaming.
Know what I think? You're retarded or scared or gay or something, because you cannot judge a game from youtube footage. PLAY THE FUCKING GAME then judge it, and even if you don't like it, and the game is "horrible", how come it's sold more than any other game in recent years? How come almost everyone likes it? Dumb-asses like you should be put in their own country where they won't bother the rest of us.

I find, personally, that older games tend to have much more value when it comes to gameplay than a good deal of modern games do. Perhaps it's the hype for me but something about the newer games just don't do it for me.

Of course I'll list the classics. For alot of people, the older games were and still are, great and are jewels that may otherwise not be played.

I could tell people that they should play God Of War over an ancient game but which are they far more likely to find on their own if they haven't already?

Of course, the games I listed are far from being anything but mainstream but I'm sure you understand what I'm getting at.

Also, nothing about graphics denote gameplay. They're nice but they aren't as essential as great gameplay.

I get what you are saying, and congratulations for being the first to come up with a point other than "No, that's stupid" in bigger words.

How about that getting a sex-change, eh?

That is what I am saying is I have no clear cut favourite it all depends on my mood that day. Some days I really want the stats and strategy of an RPG or JRPG. Some days I just want to run and gun and not worry about the stats. Some days I really want to play some sports style games. Some days I really want a deep story. Some days I really want an artsy game. I just like playing games to choose one above the rest would be impossible because I might be able to give you a winner today but tomorrow could be something completely different.

The Secret of Monkey Island. I will most likely refuse to speak to you if you haven't played the best game of all time.
This one.
What's so great about point and click
Oh; y'know; it just had one of the best storylines of all time... Oh; and the way that it was funny and intuitive.
If I want story, I can read a book or watch a movie. While story is (very) important in games, it can't be the only thing going for a game. I'd hardly call a point and click borefest a "must play" in the same sense as Portal or Super Mario World are "must play" games.

Gameplay > Story > Graphics/Sound/etc.

Shadow of the Colossus. It was a beautiful game, and it deserved everyone's attention.
Also, Bioshock. That game has kept me interested for the past two and a half years, I just keep going back and playing it.

Yeah I played through it again a few months back I never really thought about it when I was a kid. It made me laugh so hard and really surprised me now that I actually understand what it was saying :p

You know what sells a lot? Mouth wash. THIS DOES NOT MAKE IT THE MOST TASTIEST OF DRINKS. Just because something sells in vast quantities to people does not make it good. The last twilight film was a huge success and every teenage girl came away loving it, however THIS DOES NOT MAKE IT THE BEST FILM EVER.

Look, stevie. Your new to this forum. We don't appreciate your constant anger and foul language. Just tone it down.

/End back seat administrating

EDIT: I think everyone who says that they are a serious gamer should play the void. It actually really pushes gaming to the edge of what we know it to be.

I think every gamer should trace back the origins of their favourite genre, and try one of the early games of the genre that pioneered it. For example in regards to the FPS genre, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake II/III, you get the idea.

Ok, well, at least you like games from modern times and not like 20 years ago

You always get much more out of those games. You didn't realize how tough it actually was as a kid, either, eh?

Have you played Banjo Tooie over? There are so many innuendos in that game, I'm surprised a group of parents didn't rise up in righteous anger. Now I know why my dad was laughing so much as I played.
