Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI got me both at a young age and now. Earthbound inspires incredible nostalgia and whimsy even today. But for sheer emotional resonance nothing has quite topped MGS4.
I remember in that super heated/electrified hallway literally screaming at my screen as I pounded on the triangle button, "GET UP! GET UP YOU OLD FUCK!!!!"
Mass Effect 1 and 2 came close, but nothing has made me actually shout at the character onscreen not out of frustration (as in a fighting game) but in just dire desperation to see him not die.

What game, if any, has had that one single greatest emotional response from you?

Hands fucking down. Only two other games have come even close (Tsukihime and Kana: Little Sister...the latter being pretty close). I'll let my past self sum it up.

Verdict

Well, we're here. I've struggled to keep my sentimentality in check and myself objective...but really, I figured there was something wrong when I felt relief that there was something in the game I could complain about, just so people could take me seriously. Therefore, the review is essentially finished, so I'm going to officially abandon objectivity from here on out.

I love this game.

I seriously have not played anything else that provoked the sheer amount and variety of emotional responses that this game produced in me, including a few I don't have names for. Creeping dread, crushing despair, tearful relief, savage joy, bitter depression, awestruck wonder, loving empathy, inarticulate rage and utter hatred (see: Kyoka), deep shock, bittersweet satisfaction, growing suspicion, calm contentment, hell, even fatherly pride (of Kouhei) at one point...and three different shades of pure happiness.

Aeka's route in particular was spectacularly written, its resolution both horrifying and satisfying in a way I found slightly shocking, and its ending the happy memory that allowed me to move on to the other routes without feeling like a monster for ignoring her.

Mizuki's unhappy ending (which I did stumble onto) hit like a punch in the gut and lingered like a stab wound the more I thought of it...but her happy ending is the most heartwarming thing I've ever read. I actually walked around distracted most of the next day, so touched was I.

In a way, Nekoko's arc felt like the weakest...which didn't dent it much. Nekoko is still pretty entertaining, herself. I was particularly enamored after the twist most of the way through, which I totally did not see coming, but which ultimately made me love her along with the others. As well, her happy ending went with a cute sort of happiness that I found delightful.

The only thing preventing this game from overtaking Tsukihime and/or Fate/Stay Night as my new favorite visual novel is my love of supernatural elements, nostalgic bonds, and the sheer volume of the Nasuverse and its characters. As is, I'm rambling, so I'll cut off here.

Also, while most of the music is atmospheric rather than impressive (which works very, very well), there are a few standouts. Since I already posted the main theme in the review, here's another.

Hmmm...

The ending to Shadow of the Collossus had probably the greatest 'effect' on me. Still kind of bummed out just thinking about it.

A lesser but still noteworthy one was in FFX when you find out the 'catch' to the final summoning... I really hated Tidus up to that point (little cheery uppity **** that he was), but seeing the mental punch to the gut he just went through I couldn't help but feel bad for the guy.

Halo, and to those who have seen me post halo in other threads dont say a damn thing.

Its the music that really sets my heart ablaze with emotions i havent a name for, and when the music is combined with amazing sights such as the first time you see High Charity in Halo 2 or the first terrifying time you lay your eyes upon the Flood parasite, or when one of the climactic scenes is finnaly unvieled, such as the first time you see the Ark, or the replacement ring for the one Master Chief destroyed i feel my heart swell with something, so far i dont have a proper name for what i feel but as far as im concerned that doesnt matter, just expirencing it is more than enough especially considering that there is nothing else i know of that makes me feel anythign but anger.

Aerith's Theme makes me tear up.
Yeah, now, whenever I see the opening scene, of her face in the ember-light... well..

/breaks out the tissues.
*weeps with you*

She looks so peaceful. So calm. It broke my heart.

My tough-guy, six-foot-three, 300 pound little brother SOBS when he sees that scene.

Bioshock, when

Andrew Ryan got killed, and I discovered that 'Would you Kindly' made me do the stuff I did. When he got killed I was in utter shock, discovered that Atlas was Fontaine and was like woooaahhhh baby what the hell. For some reason I did not expect it, for some strange strange reason, it came as a massive surprise and is now one of my favorite games! Along with Thief and Unreal Tournament!

He's got me by about 50lbs, but I'm the same. Heck, some times, when I see that scene during an attempted replay, I think about how I'm setting off the chain of events that leads to her death, and I can't bring myself to start the game again.

Mass Effect 2. I started cheering Joker on during his moment of glory.

When the Collectors raided the Normandy.

Also, my brother ended up seething with rage when
Garrus was killed by seeker swarms.
He started swearing like a maniac at every Collector he came across.
What makes it funny is that we agreed to a pact where we weren't allowed to change the events of our individual narratives in any way.
So he's stuck with that for ME3.

I cried at the end of Lufia II. It has the saddest happy ending I've ever seen.

More recently, the ending for Kingdom Hearts, 358/2 days hit me really hard. Maybe it's just the stuff that's happenning in my life, but it almost felt to heavy for a video game. ust wanting to be able to eat ice cream with them again...

Baldur's Gate 2 for me. I love Irenicus. Ellesime was a jerk. I don't think I could stand to kill him again. His revenge was well justified.

Fallout 3...the reason it hit me hard was because it came out of nowhere, the ending it was, I was doing a mission, and BAM! Epiloge, game over, it's been real :p

I just know I'll have to be careful when FO:NV comes along and takes my attention, I'll explore like no one's buisness ^^ lol

The ending of Red Dead Redemption brought me some emotional responses.

The ending of Red Dead Redemption. PISSED ME OFF. The ending was such a God damn cockslap. I can't believe John died, i could have gotten him out of that situation with a few sticks of dynamite and my Evan's repeater.

I have to say that Heavy Rain has managed to elicit the strongest emotion I've ever had that was caused by a video game.

During the final act/'level', in the abandoned warehouse. I had managed to get Ethan to the right location (by guessing correctly) and had found not Jason Shaun in the well. Whilst trying to open the grate to get him out of the water, Shelby comes up behind me with a gun, apparently going to kill both Ethan and Shaun, despite the fact that Ethan had gone through Scott's treasure hunt and still come out on top. That Scott ignored his own rules and was apparently not going to let the other two go on their merry way made me royally pissed, and if Shaun hadn't woked up after Ethan performed CPR on him, then I would have killed Scott ASAP.

It was still damn hard not to simply let him fall to his death when he hanged from that ledge during the final fight...

Spore, I spent the entire evening I first played that game in constant fury at what once was and what is. For example that spore was once a beacon of hope for me that I waited many years to play. And what it is now is can only be expressed through the medium of violent screaming and anger.

In all seriousness though I find it very difficult to feel emotions even in real life let alone in a fictional reality. Once or twice maybe but ultimately I remain stoic in the face of emotionally incentive cutscenes.
