There are times when I imagine that all of us become so involved in a game that we feel very connected to the character we're playing as, and we feel like we are a part of the world that we're directing them through. My question is what game sucked you in the most and made you feel like you were the character and you were in the world? What game succeeded the most in taking you away from the real world?
For me, it is undoubtedly Morrowind. When I first played it several years ago, everything about The Elder Scrolls was new to me and I had no idea what I was getting into. I remember starting the game on the prison ship and being tossed off in Seyda Neen. My character was lost in unfamiliar territory with nowhere to go, and I really felt that since I had never played an open ended RPG of that sort before Morrowind. I felt that my character would be overwhelmed by what they were faced with, and so was I. Not knowing what to do, where to go, or how to get anywhere overwhelmed me very much.
Over time, I learned a lot about Vvardenfell and as I did little quests and explored the island, I grew to feel very connected to my character, sort of as if I had projected my consciousness into Tamriel. I could lose myself for hours in that game and completely forget about real world responsibilities unless I grew hungry or Mother Nature called.
But everything just clicked over time. The setting, the music, all of the ambient characters and objects and such.. I just felt totally in tune with my character and felt like I wasn't just directing them with my mouse and keyboard, but was really living and learning on the island of Vvardenfell. Kudos to Bethesda for making Morrowind so immersive for me.
Anyone else ever feel completely immersed and lost in a game? What game, and to what extent?
