Sonic Generations, I was expecting sega to completely ruin it but it actually turned out to be a very good game, voice acting still sucks balls though

I was expecting it to have no story, unneccesary customisation, etc. But I was unpleasently surprised by the -what- 5 maps, 2 gameplay types and glitchy horrible multiplayer.

Revelations because of how terrible it was. Expected at LEAST Brotherhood quality. Got shit instead.

The first AC game that I'm even considering a return. I'm a pretty big fan, but Ubisoft really lost the ball on this one.

Two Worlds II. It is SO much improved over the first game, you wouldn't even have thought it was the same game line.

Crysis 2. (Yeah, remember that thing?)

It surprised me because of how much I liked it. I got it on a whim for a reason I don't remember and now that I've played a bit of BF3 (Which wasn't bad, just not quite up to snuff for me) and MW3 (Which sucks) is the ever-unchanging CoD, meaning I don't have to play it to know what it's like (I've never liked CoD, I just hate it's multiplayer design. Oh, and aim assist is the bane of immersion), it's officially earned my "Best FPS of the Year" award, because it kicks the asses of both BF3 and CoD.
Alright, now that I've pissed off both the CoD AND the Battlefield fanboys:

New Vegas. Because in retrospect I can see how infinitely better Bethesda would have been off if they just hired Obsidian to do everything related to story or characters.

Dark Souls Fo Sho.
I know it's sad, but I read this as "Dark Souls Fus Ro Dah"

My big surprise this year was both Skyrim and Serious Sam 3.

Skyrim looked great, no doubt. But with such a more grounded theme, i didnt think I was going to be finding any really interesting things to do and see in the game since some of that...i guess, goofiness, from Oblivion could have vanished in the translation to the new engine.

And Serious Sam 3, especially at the start, frustrated and confused me with its tight corridor shooting and simple soldier enemies. But when that game picked up its rhythm and got going, it now stands as one of the most enjoyable shooters to play in a long while. I'm fairly confident the first few levels of it are more of a testament to modern shooter problems that perhaps just lasted a bit too long for its own good.

What was wrong with it? I should probably find out before getting it :p

For me it was sadly Uncharted 3. Being the sequel to one of my favourite games of all time, I had high hopes. Unfortunately I found the story to be an utter mess, and the game was a massive disappointment and a step back for the series.

I'm with Yahtzee.

Xenoblade Chronicles.
A JRPG I still want to play after 30 hours?
WHAT IS THIS MAGIC??!!
I second this.

It's a truly great JRPG if I haven't strangled myself with my own intestines after a few hours.
Its a JRPG for people who hate JRPG's, is essentially the overriding opinion on that.

Like Twilight is the book for people who typically hate reading.

On topic, Mortal Kombbat. I was suprised by how much I really liked playing it, getting a feel for the combos, the special moves, the Fatalities, it was really enjoyable for me.
There are two things that make or break a JRPG for me.

Is the voice acting annoying?

Is the plot an angsty piece of Japanese soap opera shit?

If the answer is no to both of these things, I'll probably like it.

This, i waited till it dropped in price and i was still really suprised by how bad it was, i thought at the very least i would get a competent multiplayer, how wrong i was.

As for good games I don't think anything really suprised me all the good games i purchased lived up to the expectations i don't think anything really exceeded that. If i had to pick anything maybe Magic the Gather 2012 (why is it called 2012 when it was released June 2011?) on steam, the arch mage thing was actually pretty cool and challenging.

favorite games of the year go to Gears of War 3 or Skyrim

For me, Modern Warfare 1. I went to that old title, my only experience of Call of Duty being Black Ops (which is horrible) and I was told, "You'll love the stealth mission." I doubted this. I played the game, and fell in love. "We'll be impossible to spot in our gillie suits..." Oh I'll never forget that Captain. A really interdependent mission that made me so damn attached to the character and it tested that attachment to the point that I felt warding off all those attackers was warranted and deserved in the following sequence. The whole game, though slightly dated had a really satisfying feel. Felt better than Black Ops, definitely.

Skyward sword definitely surprised me...
It lived up to the hype and became one of my favorite games of all time.

Resistance 3, for the fact that it wore the face of a standard current gen FPS then simply was not one.

And followed by a close second with Serious Sam 3, because unlike Duke Nukem Forever it really is a throwback to classic FPS's.
