Most resent would be Persona 3 and 4. 3 made me tear up. 4 made me shed manly tears of sadness when Nanako died and manly tears of joy at the going away seen at the end. I've just started Planescape and I'm enjoying it. Chrono Trigger of course. Beyond good and evil also.

Legacy of Kain series
I'm hesitant to say Alan Wake, but it could be a possible candidate
Half-life 2
Portal 1 and 2
Uncharted series has decent stories, but they don't make the most of their medium
Prince of Persia series

As well as some others people have mentioned. I'm disappointed to not see more great stories in games. This is the one aspect that developers really need to work on these days.

I think that Neverwinter Nights 2, Mask of the Betrayer has a good story

The problem is that it is a tad bit too subtle and you kind of have to look for it. But what you find is rather good
Someone talking about an Obsidian game without bitching about the bugginess? Someone mark the calender!

Anyways, yes, but I'd extend that to all Obsidian games. I honestly feel that no two of their stories are alike.
here here! Pass this man a beer!

(unintentional rhyme)

highly agreed.

now i'm not going to go through all 4 pages but i garuntee once the high and mighty "all games have utter shit for stories" people come flying in here, there will be flames high and mighty to be had.

OT: like i said not going to go through the 4 pages but I loved kotor and back in the day...i absolutely lovedddddd pokemon, its so simple but god dammit did i want to be pokemon champion!

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Despite some of their twists being somewhat predictable (Someone bursts into the courtroom at the last second? Gasp!) they keep you on your toes quite a bit, and have some genuinely good twists in a story that actually makes a fair bit of sense by the end.

That and Ghost Trick. Ghost Trick I especially applaud because the villain was very well-written, and by the end, you could completely sympathize with him for causing...well, the events of the game. Certainly not your typical warlord villain.

Mass Effect, they even explain the stories and the world adapts to your actions, the morality system (like all morality systems in games) is annoying but whatever. It should keep track of your methods or your personality, not morality. I didn't see the game solving the debates of Ethics.

Assassin's Creed 2 too, with the conspiracy and how it ties IRL with the game, as well as giving actual locations and figures to assassinate & their history. Just let down by a awful 3 hours of hand holding at the beginning (carry the box for yourself leonardi you lazy bastardo).

Odd, I say that games are the best medium to tell a story when done well, followed by books, TV series and then way at the worst end movies, yet I can't think of other 'genuinely great stories' in games that I have played.

I am also disturbed how people have said pokémon. genuinely disappointed at the internet. Games will never be taken seriously as a form of media at this rate :(

Its funny large RPG's like Dragonage and Mass Effect, KOTOR, although story oriented I dont think any of them have a great story, same case with JRPG's, good games but the story is pretty generic.

I do like simple stories like Zelda as you always feel satisfied at the end, but for complex ones well written Point and click adventures are great 999 for the DS had exceptional writing IMO, and games like Phonix Write and Professure Layton are good at telling more comical mysteries

I have to say Metro 2033. It's a brilliant story that completely makes up for the few glitches in the gameplay.

My personal favorite is Kotor, by far.
Second is Mass Effect. I don't think ME2 compares to ME1 story wise.
I also enjoy the Resistance storyline, for whatever reason.
MW1 is one of my favorites also. There's nothing like
watching that nuke go off, or the pair of nukes launch. Those images are forever burned into my brain.

Fallout: New Vegas

Not only did it make up for the atrocity that was F3 but the storyline was generally good and interesting. The political bakcground for the major factions was interesting and dissecting the pros and cons was fun. Also most of the companion side quests were very well done, such as Boone's, Raul's and Veronica's. Also, Dead Money had a fantastic story and extensive backstory and as I learnt about the characters I cared for them more which made it difficult when it came to the decision making towards the end.

Also the whole Courier and Ulysses storyline is starting to get really interesting and I can't wait for Old World Blues to give us more info.

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, Destroy All Humans!1 and 2, the Resistance series, the Dynasty Warriors (more to do with the Three Kingdoms era really) series and Dino Crisis 2 (even though I still don't fully get it) are all games that have had a good story.

LA noire had a great story in my opinion
the conspiracy narrative might have used some work but it was populated by realistic, flawed characters, the best acting ive ever seen in a video game, and solid writing
it quickly became one of my favorite games

aside from that there is Mass Effect, Bioshock and Half-Life

Really sad to see the most pathetically primitive games like sotc/ico/portal getting nominated for having great stories. They're the narrative equivalent of a blurb. Seems the more shallow the game, the higher people rate it. Deep games like gtaiv, fallout new vegas are getting unfairly punished for "flaws" that these other games couldn't possibly have because they don't even try to have a significant story.

Fallout 3 (even with Original ending) - Best
What ? It was an abomination. They managed to ruin the BoS (who wer already well written before they fucked it up) they made the enclave the usual nazis, who show no humanity. The water shoult be irradiet after 200 years, the people shouldnt have been traumatised from a war they never saw. There shouldnt have been giant robots throwing nukes like footballs. Wy did the enclave ignore the pentagon despite being there before the BoS ? Dad was an idiot, he killed himself and you for no reason "run". You cant tell him its his fault you got kicked out of the vault. Writing in fallout 3 was terrible.

Bioshock.
RDR
Halo 1,2 and 3.
Halo reach.

I disagree with anyone saying about mas effect. But I cant be bothered to go into it. On rant is enough for now.

Fix these fucking captures
********************SPOILER FROM FALLOUT 3 WARNING IN THIS POST*****************

"People shouldn't have been traumatized from a war they never saw?" I suppose we should be bothered about World War II, considering we weren't around to see it then? Carol the ghouls account of the day the bombs fell was one of the best stories in the game, and let us understand the sheer destruction that occurred. DC is the capital of the US, so of course it's going to be the most heavily damaged setting of Fallout series.

I'll admit that the death of Dad was done badly and could have been handled well, but it's up to player interpretation to think what they will of James. When he wanted to run straight to Rivet City after all the work i'd done trying to find him i was pissed, but that's one of the many ways you can interpret James, he's not suppose to be the worlds greatest Dad, he's flawed just like everyone else.

The BOS are being the good guys and are suffering for it. The Outcasts serve as the reminder of what they are suppose to be doing. They are not powerful, they struggle to even function and at the beginning have no regard for the player. They change with the actions of the player, showing development. Yes, they are quite different from other incarnations but you can't expect them to remain the same each game.

The original ending is more left to player interpretation again and i understand why others do actually get annoyed, not only does it not allow you to keep playing but can be argued as stopping the player from getting closure. But in a round about type of way RDR did the same thing but only allowed you to keep playing, and it's still an amazing piece of video game narrative.

The ending serves to (in the event of a good ending) show the level of sacrifice an innocent soul must make in the pursuit of this moral good. To emerge from he vault in to an alien world with no probability of survival as a symbol of good in a barren land is suppose to be more meaningful.

I love in the beginning hwo you learn wht you don't fit in the to vault so well, seeing as the character is literally from two worlds and belonging to neither. the rejection after saving the vault is an amazingly cathartic experience in my opinion. We are given liberation at a price of exile form the only true home we have ever known. that's brilliant writing in my opinion.

For all it's flaws, i think Fallout 3 is an amazing game with a brilliant level of storytelling and narrative. One of the best stories i have ever played.

New Vegas did suck though. So let down after Fallout 3 by that game.

Mass Effect 1 and 2
Kingdom Hearts (2 was okay. I didn't like that it pulled the "revisit every world again card." It just got stale from there)
Dragon Age: Origins
KotOR 1 and 2
Halo 1 and 2 (3 sucked IMO)
Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 (Brotherhood wasn't bad, but not as good as the others)
