Metal Gear Solid 2. The moment Hideo Kojima proved video game designers could be as overzealous and self indulgent as film makers.
Monkey Island 4/ Escape from Monkey Island.
Broken Sword 3 & 4.
Am I the only one who's going to say none? A game isn't ruined by it's sequel, I can easily go back to the first and have as much fun as I did before I played the sequel.
I beg to differ. I guess this is a personal thing, but sometimes stories in games give an ending which we're satisfied with, but after playing a sequel that's poor, I'll play the original game knowing that later on in the history of the series things only get worse (as in less entertaining).
That's probably not a good description. Maybe if I use Broken Sword as an example. In the first game, I get the feeling that this would be the single most important, life changing experience for George Stobbart. But after playing so many dire sequels, I now play the original knowing that's not the case, as he has plenty more experiences like it. It also breaks the suspension of disbelief.
Sorry if I've waffled on here.
why didn't anyone say crash bandicoot?
Oh yes. And just about every 3D platformer for that matter. Problem with many sequels to platformers are-
-They suddenly give the main characters 'attitude' (presumably to keep the attention of the fanbase that started young but is now growing older). See Klonoa 2, the later Spyro games, Sonic.
-Lots of new characters which feel arbetrary and annoying (again, Spyro and Sonic)
-Soundtracks often become quite poor in comparison
-Obviously game mechanics can become stale
-Locations also lose their sense of originality
