God damn that sexy spaceman
I second that. Lets have a likeable protagonist, for once. And a semblance of a decent plot. Companion Cube over Meat Cube, so to speak.
Gaming has earned itself a really brainless reputation.

All the soldiers beside delta squad had mask on. And tons of them died. So yeah...most of the people in mask are normal killed off somehow. And im not sure who was pissed off. I like Fallout 3, ending kind of left it open if you were alive or not. But all im saying is, they can't have the bad guys win at the end, unless you are the bad guys..Like Overlord, your job was to kill off the other main baddies so you can rule, and found out that you were the hero turn evil. For me I was evil and rule with a Iron fist lol.
I'm pretty sure the Vault 101 Lone Wanderer dies.
A couple hundred rads will do that to you (even if you took rad-x and wore an advanced radiation suit...)

Oh, for protagonists there's Jade from Good and Evil - she's a journalist (with just a smidgen of martial training, heh)

I hate the 'you're the only one actually doing anything' cliché that EVERY fps and rpg does - even in CoD4 you're doing most of the grunt work, single-handedly advancing the team. Gets a bit old. I mean, I've played strategy games, and I know that no commander sends a single unit off to take on the entire enemy army... unless it's a diversion or sacrifice... dammit!
Even worse in RPGs. Like in 7 Days a Skeptic...

Spoilers of said game.

When your confined to a cell because it seems "Awfully suspicious" that you were there at all the murders, despite being the only one investigating them.

also, FPS cliche:

The helicopter will NEVER come. It will be shot down, there will be enemy heli's in the area, or you'll have to go to Mount Doom and back to get to it.

Personally I hate the obligatory tutorials. NO ONE wants a fucking obligatory tutorial, and if your game is so fucking complicated that it REQUIRES one, then your game has a major problem with gameplay and needs to go back to the drawing board.

Also, the whole inclusion of story elements IN the tutorial does in fact NOT make it any more interesting, nor does it hide the fact that we're stuck in a goddamn tutorial. It ain't fooling anyone so STOP!
The only obligatory tutorial i remember liking was Spiderman 2's. But that was becuase Bruce Campbell was hilarious.

cough* Gordon Freedman
Well we don't really know how intelligent he is...
as far as we can tell, he's an apeman physicist mix. He pushes things into things and shoots things.

Plus he never says a word. Oh, and he has a pony tail.
I didn't find him very interesting :S
You don't find him interesting therefore he's normal -I also hate games that think you're an idiot and make you do that damn tutorial which you know about or... unskippable cutscenes *cough* Lord of the Rings Conquest *cough*

Not just a gaming cliche, but a cliche in general.

When you have a reasonable size group of good guys with strong skills, but it's only ever the main protagonist who can save the day in the end. I'd much prefer that each person proves themselves at different points by doing something that the others can't, and not just piss-poor filler-esque one-shots.

Another cliche that makes me furious is when in horror shooters your partner always says :"Hey, even though there are dozens of creatures creeping around and trying to rip our heads off, let's split up!" And if the game is a FPS, your character won't even try to protest, because he,, most likely, will be mute!
Why are so many main protagonists mute?
Well, a lot of people complain when the right voice ins't used so I believe it's kind of good to keep the main character mute to keep even more people from hating the game for using a weak or overly strong or famous person's voice
Also Prince of Persia's ending had you release the bad guy you spent the whole game imprinsoning.

The black guy usually being unneccessarily gung-ho or smart-mouthed at the very least.

And yes, the exact definition of stereotype doesn't make a difference seeing as how we're already saying what repetition in video games bothers us.
In H.A.W.X., one level has you communicating with a team on the ground lead by a black guy. His voice is very stereotypical, but he dosen't say "Yo dawgs, where my hos at?" or anything like that. He says things a real leader would say. "We're pinned down by enemy fire! We need assistance!" It really made me feel good that games, even a single one, are starting to stray away from those stereotypes.

More on topic, anyone saying that everyone who plays World of Warcraft is a fat super nerd. That isn't true. I'm, personaly, a slightly over weight super nerd. But I do know people who will tell me that they are more casual players, but still enjoy World of Warcraft. Not like that. They just list games they play and "World of Warcraft" will be their along with "The Sims" and "Bejewled". And nothing else.

in days gone by, we had stories to racing games, and the main characters main rival was always a Russian brully.

The "sexualisation" of female characters, Samus Aran was more interesting when she kept her suit on.

Zero Suit Samus in brawl made me weep.
Finally someone who shares my opinion. it was just a bad Nintendo ploy to make itself look more mature. Does she really need that overly sexual voice?
HOLD ON!, she speaks in Brawl?

oh my god, there's no fucking hope, Nintendo can go fuck itself, I was gonna buy Metroid Prime 3 as well... now I'm boycotting it.

Someone at Nintendo not high on drugs must have realised that was a bad idea?
Or just got off over it. Yeah she speaks in the celebration screen sometimes if you win a Brawl. They gave her a whip for a weapon and everything.
Sad thing is, back in the NES and SNES days, Samus was depicted as roughly 6'3" tall, very muscular, and had a more rounded face in some of the production art. Her hair also was spontaneously changed between green and purple from picture to picture. If you can locate shots from the Super Metroid Players Guide you'll see what I mean. This was in the days when Gunpei Yokoi was still the head of that design team before his untimely death. Samus is mostly the way she is now because of being outsourced to an American studio.

I don't know about you, but I like the old Samus better.

Same actually. It would be nice to play as a normal, intelligent bloke instead of some muscle-bound idiot for once.
come on, its not like every protagonist is a.....wait a minute

*reviews list of game protagonist*

DAMMIT
There's probably a fair list of normal protagonists. Just none I can think of.
Frank West from Dead Rising?
And to a lesser extent, the survivors in L4D.
There are some out there, but they're definitely a thing of the past. I can't only think of old games that have more normal people as protagonists.

"Out of this World" for the Amiga is one... you play a young scientist of a man with no weapons, no combat training, and are plunged into a faraway world of one-hit-kill death traps and monsters.

Robotrek for SNES is another. You're a young boy who aspires to become a great inventor and you build this barrel-chested robots with big ol' Anime eyes to fight for you instead.

I know more, I just can't think of them right now...

In FPS games, it's the use of burning oil drums as lighting sources, and the inevitable stage in the game in which you lose most or all of your equipment and have to find it again. I'm glad the sewer level was mentioned, as were the obviously forced/scripted sections (mounted MG with a horde of enemies as soon as you touch it, vehicle sections, fully-stocked storeroom just before a boss fight, etc.)

In RTS games, it's the inevitable betrayal by a former ally, and the survive for X amount of time mission (though I admittedly do tend to like some of those.)

In RPGs/MMOs, it's the kill arbitrary number of X quests, delivery quests, and the character hailing from the frozen northern wastes.

Oh, and as far as normal characters go, I would suggest some of Indigo Prophecy's protagonists.

I've always wondered why there's never any frozen southern wastes - just cause most of the land mass is in the North on Earth should mean it has to be so on every sci-fi/fantasy world too :/

The thing I find most annoying is the female heroes are all pencil thin even while they are supposed to be non-magically stronger than some gigantic beast or villain. Sex sells I guess, but its a sad cliche to me.

one of the worst cliches is "save the princess" i mean jeesh she a princess for god's sake doesn't she have a personal guard or something instead of getting captured and having a plumber or little kid come save them. i mean really
