Pretty much everything except sports and party gaming. It sounds like a lame answer but I really do try to play a whole bunch of different game genre and enjoy pretty much all of them. If I had to narrow it down I'd probably go with an action/rpg combo, although I think I'm starting to grow out of my RPG phase for now.

I play pretty much every genre of game out there with the exception of Sports sims, and I'll even play those if they throw in Mario or something. Racing games, I only really like kart racing games and burnout. Don't really like military shooters, but set it in space and I love 'em. I'm an extremely casual player of fixed plane fighters and RTS games because I really like both genres, but suck at all of the games I've played. I play more RPGs than anything else, and prefer the good old Japanese style.

Action adventure games (Ninja Gaiden Black) will always be a staple for me. Old school J-RPG's are great (FF4, FF6). But I've always had a soft spot for lightgun games; yeah it's a bit gimmicky, but shooting terrorists in the dick with a recoiling lightgun is still good fun. Metroid style games have great replay value, too.

RTS although my OCD stops me from being any good at it.
FPS is my main one but that just comes from years of playing everything from UT to Call Of Duty.

WRPG, Competitive MMORPG's, RTS games and Adventure equally.

I used to play FPS games competitively, but they started to suck after CoD:MW.
Tried Battlefield BC2? I'm having loads of fun playing it, even though my mind cannot comprehend why it is not possible to join a game as a group/squad.

OT: Probably FPS. I play a lot of wrpgs and action adventures too.
You can.

Select Play With Friends under the Multiplayer tab -> select Create Squad -> invite your friends -> Choose game mode and map -> start.

Edit: Or for JOINING a friend's squad (I just woke up so I missed that part of your post), Go to the Play With Friends option, highlight your friend's name and press X/A/whateverthepcuses. Or your friend could simply press start, choose squad options and send you an invite. If the team isn't full and they have an open slot, you'll join their squad.

OT: I prefer the FPS genre, though I gladly dabble in other Genre's (I LOVE The Elder Scrolls).

JRPGs some WRPGs and then the odd one of most other genres...I'm not too picky but I hate the un-innovative mainstream crap nowadays (I'm looking at you CoD and Halo!)

I play games with good stories, interesting characters, and/or an intriguing fundamental choice/concept on display.

I give no shit to the little word Gamestop employees attach to the bottom to figure out which aisle it goes into.....

I do like my RTS games, but I also love many FPS's... I can't really put myself into one category.

Well, above all, I'm a cooperative player. If there's a game with a coop mode and reliable teammates available, I'll propably like it.

RTS, about 99% of the time, it's Starcraft 2.
I also play a wee bit Blops on the PS3, but not nearly as much as Starcraft.
